Two years ago, my dad closed his greenhouse business and retired, leaving a few things behind. This massive generator was one of them. No one has done anything with the property in the last two years, so here this thing sits unused, until now!

I have that same Duralast jump box. I got mine in spring of last year. I used it start up my car, which has a 3.8L V6, multiple times. But then winter came and one day, I for I had left my inverter plugged in to the 12v outlet. For whatever reason, this jump pack let me down. I keep it stored indoors all the time and the battery is always topped off. I ended up purchasing the NOCO Genius battery jump pack that same day which was able to start my car without a hitch. Now that Duralast jump box isn't completely useless, the air compressor is awesome and have the ability to plug in 12v and USB for power and charging makes that a mobile power station. But a jump box it is not, especially in the dead of winter. FYI The CCA on the jump box states 700, my car requires 650.

need to replace the hoses on that pig, next time starting up a generator that has been sitting, open up the dog house, had one where a possum was living in it, the owner started it, no more possum and smoked the alternator. those generators are built like a brick shit house, seen them with over 14000 hours on it before any issues. on the door, how it says "fast response" it referrers to the voltage regulation system, not how fast it can start.

A really common youtuber mistake (especially with the car guys) is to try and start an engine with a dead battery and a jumper pack. In reality these jumper packs can only supply about 100CCA if you are lucky, whereas your average proper battery will be 400-800 CCA. The proper way to go is to left the jump pack charge the dead battery so that the start can then be supplied from the much higher peak current battery when it's time to start. If the dead battery is too far gone, it's just going to effectively short out the jumper pack and leave even less available current for the start. Thankfully unlike 90% of everyone else, you worked out to go and grab a battery and make sure it was properly connected 👍

"never quite reaches 180"...... because it's a 160 to 165F thermostat and under high load it would run a bit hotter, but they run them on lower t-stat's on purpose since it's a fixed RPM and stationary device...

Jump packs work by transferring some charge to the engine's primary battery which they couldn't do because the negative battery cable was so loose. If you don't have a wrench, just grab a rock and hammer the terminal down a little farther on the post to get a better connection. I'll bet the new jump starter - with it's probably 18AH battery - would have worked if that terminal had been tight. The two packs together definitely would have worked had the cable been tight and you let the jumper packs have 5 minutes to charge the original battery - that battery can deliver many more amps than the jumper packs so you need to ensure it's used. I've been doing shadetree mechanic work for almost 60 years now and a covered battery can survive a long time. One of my Group 24 batteries (used for jump starting) is from 2004 and still takes a charge ;-)

I am assuming when you removed the old battery you had loosen the cable clamps on the old battery off camera. If not that was a very very good reason why it would not start with that high resistance through the loose clamps. You can only push so much voltage through corroded lead clamps. In fact, you could have measured the voltage drop across the clamps and battery terminals and it would have told you if that was the issue, but again if you just took those clamps off by hand it was most likely the reason why the booster packs failed to turn the engine over.
@sw6188
@sw6188 4 жыл бұрын
A jump starter is not designed to start an engine on its own. It is designed to bring a recently flattened battery back up to a level where it will start the engine. When I say 'recently flattened' I am talking about a situation where you came home and left the headlights on in your car, then came out half an hour later and the battery is down to the point where it won't start the engine. Not a battery in a genset that's been dead for months or years. In addition, I noticed that when you connected the negative clip of the jump pack to the terminal on the battery, it was as loose as hell. There is no way that the jump starter would even be able to try to lift the voltage on that battery with the terminal not being tight.
@leexgx

Should you not remove dead battery? Because many forgot dead batterij has also some resistance and will eat some energy away try to charge up again (it acts also little as shortcut). There is less energy left for start motor. In normal starting scenes, the main battery is NOT dead but has little energy in. Just not enough to start it. That is why jump starters are small, they still need help of weakened battery to start. Heavy situations where battery is dead, you need bigger jumpstarter or replace battery. Then it will start.
