"Old Friends" is my absolute favorite Simon and Garfunkel song. I cry every time I hear it. It seems 'terribly strange' that this young, new duo is now IN THEIR 80s. I wonder how they feel when they sing this song now. What they imagined back then is now a past memory. I'm 17 years behind them & life has just sped by. I remember being excited to see "The Graduate" because their music was going to be on the soundtrack. Wow... my youth, their youth... Bless You, Gentlemen.

I'd say Paul Simon's grasp of old age and life was preternatural for when he penned lyrics in his twenties. And then there's Garfunkel's ineffable airy voice, harmonizing together....perfect.

I too grew up listening to them, albeit judgment on my doing so, may be reserved, but a friend of mine John Denver, with his famous 12-string, he loved Paul too, and between the two of them I would always put them both in a list of the 12 best guitarists I have ever heard. When they started out, they had to be good, to make it; and having seen Paul & Art together and heard Bridge Over Troubled Water performed live at Western Springs in Auckland New Zealand, outdoors, midday, before 40,000 people, when they sang that song, the world right then stood still. Best duo ever, Concert in Central Park a musical manuscript to excellence.

Diane Sawyer asked where we were the first time we heard Scarborough Fair. Oddly, that’s the only Simon and Garfunkel song where I can answer that question. I was thirteen years old and I heard it for the first time on July 16, 1968, on a Pan Am flight with my family from Kennedy to Heathrow. We’d never been to Europe. It was the most magical thing on the airplane’s soundtrack and fit the weirdly magical mood of going to London, where we landed late at night.

Indeed, I remember Paul's ego...& glad to hear him acknowledge it. I've seen perhaps 6-7 interviews w/ the 2 of them over the years, both singly & as a duo, & I must say, Art has to be one of the kindest, most gracious, insightful & intelligent musicians on the planet. And Paul, undeniably a genius at songwriting & a sarcastic wit...I'd love to spend a day just talking w/ them...about anything & everything.

I don't know.... Art's always seemed pompous to me, while Paul Simon has appeared understated and gracious. Of course, I haven't seen more than a handful of interviews with them, so maybe I missed some telling moments. Either way, I feel the same way as you. Also, as a guitarist, just one day of being able to learn from Paul Simon personally would be the end-all for me. I know I'd be pleading for more time though!

@@agenticmark you're just assuming he wanted fame. Maybe you wanted a different creative outlet to explore other aspects of his talent. Nothing he was pretty successful having acted in at least three high-profile movies.

Individually they are very good, as I Duo they are magnificent . It would be great for us fans if they got back together again but that's not why I'm writing this. Life is so short I know they had a lot of problems but as time goes on you got to get over those differences that drove you apart , they had a special bond . There music was/ is iconic. Even Lennon and McCartney got back together oh, and it would have been stronger if John would have lived. If something happens to one of you the other will be suffering and have many regrets that you didn't make up. Do it men !

My most beloved musicians ever. The one CD that is always out....ready to be played. God bless both and keep them safe. I wonder if they have any idea how precious they are to many of us!! Artie has a voice of an angel. But they sound the best together. ❤️. Paul’s gift of songwriting.....for without a song, there can be no singers.

Sometimes some people have to leave behind old friends. I had to do that. We no longer had anything in common. I preferred to remember our good times when younger and not force an empty friendship going forward.
