Bad to the cone. Great explanation. The numbers reminded me of gages in electrical wires.. the same but different! Thanks!

Thanks you sooooo much, I've recently bought an electric kiln which I know goes to cone 6, I was worried that it wasn't high enough for stoneware which is primarily what I work with.

This was so helpful! I knew cone 10 was high fire, but I thought anything below that was low fire. This whole time I thought cone 6 was low.

I want to be a traveling potter. Firing is the challenge. I usually use stoneware in studio but maybe earthenware since it fires at a lower temp would be better. Could I pit fire it? Or if I used stoneware maybe just bisque fire so it can travel well until I have enough to high fire somewhere. Thoughts?

Thank you for such a clear explanation. I already have a lot of cone 10 clay. What will happen if I glaze fire it to only cone 6? Would that cause problems? Thanks.

What cone do you bisque your medium fire (6) stoneware in greenware to bisque? I fire my earthenware to bisque at o4 and then glaze and refire at o6. I have never bisqued stoneware (greenware in stoneware) - I've only glazed at 6. Help please!

I have a stupid question. So if I bisque fired to 06. I have to have a glaze that is 06 too, correct? I’ve had so many people tell me they like to bisque fire at 06 and glaze fire at cone 6.

how does one go about determining the cone for wild clays? I have experimented with bon-firing my backyard clay and got it fired evenly through the pieces, I assume that this is a low fire clay, but the clay 500 miles away might be different.

I fired a stoneware at 1040 as bisque, cause i have a sample furnace with a max 1040 temp. set. Can i also choose a 1040 glaze and apply it to this stoneware and fire at 1040? I dont have my furnace with me so firing at high will not be possible at home right now.

My clay gets to 1% absorption at 02, but commercial glazes say food safe at 05/06, how do I get that absorption but keep it food safe? Will the glaze properly adhere onto 02 bisque with 1% absorption?

I have low and mid fire clay. I’m cleaning between throwing but a tiny bit of the low fire might get into the high fire. Could I still fire it to cone 5?? That’s my typical firing temp but idk if it’ll melt

Do not mix low and mid fire clay! You can use both in your studio, but keep them separated.
