100% agree. Used to do a bit of skydiving, people always found it surprising that you need 200 jumps minimum to start jumping with a camera. Until I tell them that most people when filming tend to focus more on their shot than about their own awareness and personal safety. Same will go for spearfishing..

If you get the GoPro Hero 8 and a Salvimar One plus you can get a GoPro and a dive watch for the price of only the Hero 10 or the Suunto watch> The battery of the Hero 8 seems to last longer than the Hero 10. Suunto would be a nice upgrade. Remember to rinse the watch and the dive housing of the GoPro with fresh water after each dive. let them sit at least 20 minutes. Always use a GoPro with a dive case in salt water, even if it is a cheap knockoff case.

I'm scuba diver and what surprise it was when I went spearfishin with my Suunto Vyper and it just shows diving time in minutes without seconds :) So i guess i need another diving/freediving watch. Have that in mind when buying gus :) Gopro or watch - definitelly watch :) all the best for all of you, stay safe.

Thank you for the reminder 😁 I should get a dive watch, I know I should. Currently I rely on my trusty Casio DW-290 and a vintage water filling depth gauge which I take downwith me out of curiosity and rarely look at it tbh, I don't time my bottom time, but I look at the watch when I surface and make sure that I stay there at least 3 minutes while breathing up, but I really should get a dive watch.

Lovely advice. I remembered from your previous video that the time is most important. Since then I bought a cheap casio tide watch that’s WR200m and I am fine with it for now. I didn’t want to overspend on a dive watch as they are super expensive and I tend to lose things easily. Maybe one day.

As always great video, Daniel! I wouldn't call us millennials only because we feel safe with those watches :) i mean they've existed also long time ago, but they were very niche products and mostly seen on scuba divers or competing freedivers. Thanks to technology getting cheaper, now they are accessible to us. I agree with all your mentioned points, may seem to be simple infos for some, but extremely helpful for many nevertheless. Big thanks! One point you've mentioned, i agree on conditionally. Which is the "looking at your watch on the bottom". Assumed you have set depth alarms to peep at 10-15-20-25-30 meters and a dive time alarm at your appr. max time minus 30 or 40 secs (for calm ascension to the surface), you wont have to look at the watch when you are on the bottom, else i would advise to give the watch a look once in a while :). As you would also agree, Its crucial to keep track of dive time and depth in order to avoid getting too close to ones limits. Looking forward to the next video! Dive safe!

You could title this video: Film your death or prevent it! 😄 I was fortunate enough to start diving when I was 12 and learned from two pros. I had the Padi book memorized by then but I still had a lot to learn. My dad and the Colonel never did any "Look diving" as they called it. Every dive was technical and higher up on the risk scale than an average open water dive. My first open water dive was on a bridge. Strong current and a foot of viz was their idea of an easy start. That first year they watched me like a hawk and if I did anything wrong I was topside on gear duty the rest of the day. I I remember most the day my dad took me to get my first dive watch. Up until then, I had to stay glued to his hip. That watch meant that I was responsible for my own life. Even though they never let me get too far. My dad and everyone he dove with had a dive watch. None of them used it to set a record for depth. It was to track dive time, depth, and to know when to meet up either at the anchor or topside. Alone or in a group a dive watch is a must have. I video camera is something extra and can't save your life.

But since I moved to the U.K (Birmingham) I found myself quite far from the sea, but since I started watching your videos I realised that there's nothing holding me back from doing it over here too, other than the distance and very cold waters. So I was wondering, are there Rules to be able to spearfish in the U.K ? A minimum age required ? Certain qualifications ? Protected Fish Species ? Forbidden places ? I would be very grateful if maybe you could cover this topic in one of your videos. Keep up the awesome work and Dive safe ✌

Because YT is a one-to-one experience. There is not room full of people or an audience. We all have the video in our hands or right in front of us on a display, etc. You are basically waving that thing right in my face. If I was there I would back away or duck or block.

Great vid, as always! Thanks Daniel. I've been fishing a couple years now, and I try to control my diving and surface time with a normal clock... not the best way. Dive watches are expensive and I live in Madrid so I can only fish when I travel to the coast, so I was thinking that maybe an Apple Watch could be a nice option for me. I could use it on a daily basis and also everytime I go surfing (it's a great surf watch) and hopefully spearfishing too. It's supposed to resist 50 meters depth... I only go around 10-15 meters... has anyone tried? Is there a diving app that could be useful for spearfishing?
@neversinkmakes2 жыл бұрын
Don’t use an Apple Watch for this-water resistant is different from waterproof and, generally speaking, watches labeled “water resistant to 50m” are not meant for diving. From Apple’s own website: “Apple Watch Series 2 and newer can be used for shallow water activities like swimming in a pool or ocean. However, Apple Watch Series 2 and newer shouldn't be used for scuba diving, water skiing, or other activities involving high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth.”

Bends doesnt exist when you freedive so i wouldn't mind it at all. When you get up you take a few breath until u feel relaxed then you dive again. (bends are bubbles generated by pressure they will disappear once you go up and to generate enough to be a problem you actually need to breath while being under pressure which you dont) Good to check time and depth yes. Even as a diver if you stay around the 10m mark you can stay for hours without worry about bends (even if the chart states otherwize and fun enough below 10 noone recommends decompression stops). Where we live people freedive and compressor dive daily to collect sand (by hand) into bags from the ocean floor which they later pull up to boats which they bring to shore which is used to build concrete houses. It is not out of the ordinary people have 5-6 hours of dive time a day
@user-ln1up9xi4k3 жыл бұрын
Bends absolutely exists when you freedive, but you're unlikely to have any if you aren't diving ~100ft (30m) repeatedly. But if you do make several very deep dives in a day, you probably will have mild DCS symptoms and can get full-blown bent.
@Nickerian913 жыл бұрын
@@user-ln1up9xi4k No the amount of time you can stay down without going back up is not enough and you are missing a key factor. you never take a breath therefore no new air is implemented and the small amount of air you were able to collect at the surface is nothing compared to what scuba divers generate with each breath. which means the little buildup that may happen is never gonna harm you. Theoretically possible but will never happen therefore no it is not relevant to freedivers.
@tunculuc3 жыл бұрын
@@Nickerian91 Bends may not be the problem here. If you do several 30+ dives for 2minutes+ and don't take enough surface time, then dissolved nitrogen in the blood increases and due to your short surface time it cannot escape tissues completely. Bends may not be built, but you may get a nice feeling similar to "high", which eventually leads to blackout. I personally experienced the feeling and afterwards as i recognized what that was, it scared the shit out of me and made me close the diving day early. After i blabbered about it for 3 rows, i've found a precise explanation :) see below: blue-addiction.com/en/dcs-in-free-diving/ How freedivers can develop DCS? Changes in pressure affect compressible substances in the body among which lungs of the freediver, filled with air from his last breath. Even if applied to a smaller amount of air, Dalton and Henry’s law still apply as depth and pressure increase during the dive. Partial pressure of nitrogen increases, gets higher than its natural saturation level in tissues when at the surface, and thus equilibrates through the alveoli into the blood. As the freediver ascends, nitrogen saturation will tend to equilibrate back to surface level but as gradually as it built-up. The amount of nitrogen thus dissolved in one single dive is small, and will be completely released after some time spent breathing at the surface. But with repetitive dives, small surface interval and fast ascent speed, increasing amounts of nitrogen will gradually dissolve and accumulate in the tissues. When significant level of nitrogen is dissolved, it can return during ascent to its gas form while still in the blood or tissues. The bubbles formed will cause various decompression sickness symptoms depending on their size and location.

ABC - I’ve seen it happen to many Freedivers at the world spearfishing championships in Greece. You can get it freediving.
@Nickerian913 жыл бұрын
@@tunculuc blackout and bends is not the same thing. bends is basically a "stroke". blackout is due to lack of oxygen which can easily happen when u hold your breath for to long and not ventilate enought to buildup oxygen in your bloodstream which is why "daniels" surface rule is great to prevent blackouts. never seen or heard anyone gotten bends from freediving and where i live that is how people make a living. spearfishing, fish farms (bambosticks in the ocean with nets) and sand collecting noone can afford scuba so its compressor or freediving. as mentioned freedivers dont breath underwater the only small amount of air collected is at the surface. its nothing compared to taking deep breaths continuosly while being under pressure. im going to stick to that bends is not an issue for freedivers but you do need to breath propperly at the surface yoi cant stress it

Why would i ever get a go pro? It's not like it attracts fish. And i'm not spearfishing to up my e-penis on social media. I do it to enjoy diving and eat delicious fish. A go pro has as much use in spearfishing as a makeup bag. No idea why anyone would bring one..
