Delightful! years ago (1980 ties) I worked on vintage Spits in the UK at High Wycombe airfield, all my kids wanted me to make were swing wing jet fiters and space ships. Maybe I'll have a go at a Spit for my granddaughter. thanks for a nice vid

Very nice build from a simple plan. I started building models when I was eleven and my first one was a Guillows Fokker D-VIII which was covered with a light layer of paper and now at 74 I still enjoy building them, usually RC Sailplanes and lately E-Powered "swamp boats", which several have been built here on you-tube by several people. Enjoyed your technique to build the spinner and the use of the wood chisel for forming the leading and trailing edges and the fuselage tail section, since I've always relied on a small wood plane with a blade from a straight razor. It was a pleasure watching you build your plane and just for information, there are plans for several dozen solid wood models available on the internet which were available during the Second World War for identifying friendly and/or enemy aircraft and can easily be scaled up, if you like, in order to build whatever size you would prefer. Thank you for sharing your talent and taking some of the mystery out of how they are built.

Im running this through my head as to how to build one much like this but is RC and actually flies. Im thinking the first thing to do is to skeletonize the center piece to makea hollow cavity when the sides go on. Maybe hollow out the insides of the sides as well. This makes a place for ESC, motor and such. Cutting channels for rods for control surfaces is easy enough as would be making small cavities for servos. Batteries could be hidden in drop tanks or bombs (I know, but its a spitfire...) What makes this not so far fetched of an idea is that RC parts have been super micro sized due to the boom in micro quadcopters. And the parts a cheap as hell now too. Im also thinking of using super capacitors instead of batteries! They charge in an instant and are light too. Thanks for the inspiration DM Idea!e

A good job, but better if you include the very important dihedral - the upsweep of the wings. I made a large Spit for my grandson out of scrap wood and at first made the wings flat, like a Hawker Hurricane, and it just looked wrong so I removed the wings and cut out a V-shaped piece of wood from the centre, glued the two wings together and there was the characteristic front profile of the Spitfire. Try it and see the difference. I made a 4 blade prop of the Mk IX, my favourite. Thanks!

@larrywhalen1274 жыл бұрын
Roshan, best thing to do is pick a model with simple lines like a WW-II German Messerschmidt or a U.S. Mustang fighter since they have very simple lines. Most everything you need to cut/carve the soft wood to make them with, including the glue or epoxy can be purchased at a 99 Cent Store, such as the retractable safety cutters and small hand saw, as well as the mall clamps you'll need to secure the wood once it's glued together. One other thing is, Harbor Freight has six different models of WW-I aircraft for $2.00 each which are a lot of fun to build, and even though I've already built several of them I have least four or five more on my shelf which I intend to take a little more time to build in order to finish them closer to scale than they were meant to be, but this is what is part of the fun, taking a simple, no frills model and putting in a little extra effort to make a more realistic model. If you like, contact me and I'll be happy to give you a list of what you need to get started if you are serious about building, since especially now having a relaxing hobby to pass the time away is definitely a plus.
