A big thank you! I use a Trak Racer TR160 for almost half a year and about a month ago I upgraded to a stronger DD and a pedal set with a hydraulic brake. Like many sim racers I had quite an upright seating position and my pedals were very low. While this is good for triple screens, since you are quite enclosed by your monitors this way, I actually was fidling around with my wheel angle and had difficulties driving GT3s with proper braking technique. Especially on ACC it was difficult for me to brake hard and then have enough fidelity to properly trail brake, since I was more or less pushing myself quite a lot up in my GT style seat. And I have to say I probably have one of the most stiff brake pedals on sim racing market (Asetek Invicta). Mind you, my new wheel and the pedals are awesome, I gained consistency within a week and also was already quicker on the tracks I race the most. But now? With your suggestions and measurements? Wow... just wow. On the Nürburgring I was almost 3 seconds faster on ACC hotlapping, my pace was about 2 seconds improved... and what is way more important, I am now veeeeeerrryyy consistent and managed to put down 1 hour races with only 2-3 laps with off-tracks... that's amazing! The reasons? When I brake hard I don't push myself up in my seat anymore, the force goes directly from my back into the seat and thus there is way less movement. Also the thing you said about the proper shoulder and arm positions... just gold. because I realized that I was not properly snug into the seat with my shoulders before, so like you said I was wiggling around with my shoulders when I had to do a lot of steering. And steering itself is another word: although I was driving far smoother already with my new wheel and DD-base, I am sure I am way more smooth and also calm in this new seating position... You know, I don't want to belittle the guys I usually follow in sim racing since they know what they are doing and also share their knowledge... but I actually think that most of them get this part of the hobby wrong... I think many of them set their rig more like their former office-chair setups with which most of us start. And I also think since most of them prefer quite soft brake pedals they don't really have any of the problems I had. Thank you, Mr. Morad, I really really appreciate this! With sim racing exploding and more and more peripherals and brands coming to the market in many shapes, forms and a fairer and wider price range, racing is now literally for everyone... and videos like these are extremely helpful!🙏

So I went back to this great video to put everything back in its place, thanks!👍🏻 I just have a couple of questions: - How high should the pedals be from the seat? - Should the pedals be at 90 degrees to the floor? - Should my heel rest flat or at a few degrees on the base of the pedals?

I had to do my racing rig a bit backwards. I KNEW where the pedals were going to be when I built out my rig, so that came first. This is an all-wood rig, by the way. So then I had to measure out where my seat was going to go BASED on how my legs came off it and interacted with the static position of the pedals. THEN, once the seat itself was at the right angle and position, I had to figure out where the steering wheel felt most comfortable. It turns out, the plans I had put it too close to my belly, so I had to push it back 2 inches and raise it up 1 inch. I also altered the angle of attack of the wheel mount to point the wheel a bit further up towards my shoulders. I used all of these to custom-design the upright sides so that everything bolted on correctly. Then I had to put the side-pod on for my shifter. I really kinda wish I had put it a few inches closer to me, but it's totally within reach to shift. My rig is a personally-modified Ricmotech RS-1 but the wheel deck isn't made of MDF - it's made of particle-board shelf that I had on-hand. And the pedals aren't two MDF pieces, they're two SOLID WOOD pieces for extra strength. The whole thing got wrapped in subwoofer carpet material on the desk and the inside leg area and the side of the pedal bracket facing me. Everything else got the carbon-fiber treatment and I also finished it with black Arcade Trim. It looks REALLY NICE. And I have inverted pedals, just like a real car. Too bad everyone here is gonna hate on the fact that I have a Logitech G29 and shifter set. But you know what? Phooey on you! It's fun to play Gran Turismo 5 on my PS3 and American Truck Sim on my PC on this thing. I even got a 43" 4K TV mounted to it so the screen is almost exactly 33" away from my eyeballs. That's important because it gives me a nearly precisely 60° angle of view. My plan is to eventually get 2 more of those TVs and put them 60° off-set from each other to get 180° of total view in Assetto Corsa, Forza Horizon, and American Truck Sim.

Sounds like a dope rig man! And dope sweat the guys trashing the G29. For YEARS the infamous G27 was known for holding some of the world's record lap times across multiple sims. The "only" thing bad about Logitech older wheels is the fact that they're gear driven and have that notchy feel to em. Oh, and the worse part, is that they're overpriced to high heavens. $400, kiss my ass! My saved up a few hundred more and went straight to Fanatec. I bought a CSL Elite Wheels base as it's compatible on every platform I use but I ever so slightly regret it. If I started off with the G29 like I had bought for my dad, I could be rocking a three pedal setup along with an H-pattern shifter, handbrake and a rig to go with it for around the same price I spent on my current wheel alone. I find myself spending more time tweaking seating positions and messing with wheel settings more than I am driving. With the Logitech wheel I'd just set it forget it. But with the more expensive gear, there are so many more options to fiddle with! I should've gotten a job to test stuff and used that paycheck to hire someone to set everything up for me lol. I blame my office chair though. Using a quality wheel stand, with a decently powered wheel and a chair that swivels and doesn't lock at tue exact recline position is a pain in the ass. Every now and then I'll get it dialed in just right but being my office chair, once you move it and raise it back up....💡wow.....Ima get a marker and mark tue shaft where the seat feels best 🤦🏾‍♂️ why'd it take me this long to think about that.

I am thankful that you made this insightful video. A couple of years ago I bought a mid-grade sim rig which came with an upright seat (as almost all rigs do) which destroyed my lower back. I only found out what I needed to do to eliminate the bad ergonomics through a very long and arduous journey of trial and error. The biggest thing I learned - and I can't stress this enough - is that the lower you want to position the seat, the more reclined your LOWER back needs to be while your upper back/shoulders remain upright. This is simply impossible with the poultry equipment they bundle with sim rigs as you can only recline the entire back of the seat, not isolate the lower back, which is a seating position that also leads to back pain as the wrong muscles get used. (I know because I've foolishly done this and experienced it myself!) The solution is to buy a pro-grade seat which has the required lower back angle built in - or simply RAISE the seat relative to the pedals to achieve a 90+ degree angle between your lower back and your thighs. I am shocked by the amount of people I've seen that have their seat positioned very low down and rougly level with their pedals while sitting upright. If that doesn't cause pain, I would bet money it is causing damage to their backs and they'll know about it in time. I can only hope that this trend changes as people become more aware of the importance of seating ergonomics.

I achieved a perfect, formula like seat position for me with a playseat challenge (the foldable one, which is not so foldable ever since) and must say, it is the most comfortable thing i haver ever used to sit in front of my computer. No stress on the spine, no pain, just comfy. I also angled the whellbase slightly downwards which helps a lot to lower the fatigue for arms and wrists. I mean, there is only one perfect way to sit and that is when you feel comfortable for longer periods, without pain or fatigue symptoms.

It's great to have some measurments from a real car, as reference points. I just compared to my own rig. Turns out, the angles of my seat and wheel are within a couple of degrees from yours. Pretty amazing. The way I set my rig up was to try and establish a floor line at the right height - comparing to pictures and diagrams I could find from GT3 cars. To make that work, I adjusted the seat angle so I was comfortable and able to push hard on the brake without straining my lower back. I also looked at my posture so I wasn't slouching in the seat. Kinda cool how this arrived at the same angles as you have.

I’m so glad I found this video. I’m fairly new to sim racing and it basically showed me how wrong my rig was set up. I see people online talking about running their load cell brakes at or near max and me, a powerlifter with a very good squat, am burning my legs at 60-70%. Thank you very much. I struggled mostly with the steering wheel distance and your suggestion really helped. My times in GT7 have improved. For simulation driving I use a 2 inch belt above the knee. That is to prevent my legs from spreading thus causing groin/hip discomfort.

This is great, possibly just lacking one point? The one item I keep hearing differently often is how high your pedal/feet heels should be (not open cockpit). Same plane/level as where your glutes are seated? Lower/higher than that position?

Typically, all the race cars I’ve driven are usually having the seat on the floor. Since the seat is on the floor, the heel goes on the floor and is inline with my butt.

I recommend using an air-wedge to add lumbar support, the kind used to help to hang doors, windows, etc. Cheap & gives you easy adjustability, particularly if you alter your seating position for different types of driving.

In my opinion: - for immersion make it as realistic as possible, even if its not the most comfortable. - for fun and learning how to drive your simrig, I think its better to start from a more comfortable position until you feel you want more immersion. I set up mine more like my street car, that does have factory recaro's, so the seat angle is pretty deep.

I think that blending the two together would ultimately lead to comfort and speed. Every race car is different, so there’s no need to feel like you need to drive in a certain position. We also have seat fittings and some driver sit at a different height. I don’t like to sit super straight up. I typically lean my seat backwards a bit more than others, but it’s really open to you to decide what feels most comfortable and how your joints lineup with your control units.

@@danielmorad Oh yeah, that would be ideal. Of course there are different cars, I meant, if someone really likes GT3/4, and thats what they mainly play/race, they should have a seating position more like yours, rather than something like mine that is set up like a street car seating position. which is more vertical than yours and the pedals are closer. For example.

The very first one we posted on this channel was the very first video we recorded. I think it shows that just in a single day, I got a lot more comfortable. I’m enjoying it now. I noticed that there is a lot of variation in bucket seats in terms of angle of the base vs angle of the backrest. If you want the same seating position as irl you should start with the exact same seat.

There’s definitely a difference in the shape of each seat. But you tilt it but sometimes you just can’t get the exact same angles.

Yeah very true! I made a mistake and tried to follow all the measurements in the vid, but it didn't go well lol. Probably the best take aways are Morad's general advices (no straight leg, slight tilt in seat, etc.).

Nice! You should do a video on your Simcube FFB settings to duplicate a real race car. I just downloaded your Moradness profile from Truedrive for the Simcube Pro. I really, really like it. It is the best FFB settings I have downloaded so far. I've never driven a race car so I'm trusting from your experience that your settings are close to what the steering feels like in an actual GT/Prototype car. It would be even nicer to have FFB profiles provide by you for each specific model you have driven or explain the differences in steering torque levels/FFB between cars like the Merc GT3 vs. say an LMP or Indy car. I think a lot of us sim racers assume what the FFB would feel like and end up using to much FFB torque or not enough for the car be driven. Anyways It's nice to have more feedback from actual race car drivers on the proper setups for Sim Racing. Keep it up.
