Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop discusses what Kurt Cobain was like as a person. In particular, he discusses his experience with Kurt Cobain in Europe, and how later on he first started to take note of Nirvana's rising popularity after the success of their first single Love Buzz. Sub Pop was Nirvana's first label. They released much of Nirvana's material, most notably their debut album Bleach. Sub Pop also has connections to Nevermind & In Utero.

Bruce is crazyyyy! Bleach is a fucking classic, every song is a treat...I don't agree with what he says about Cobain composition being immature...I think is pretty advanced for the age he was. I mean most of those sounds kickass... and in 87-88 he had already composed more sounds with Dale, who ended up staying out of Bleach for some reason...some of them are much better( if you must, pen cap chew,blandest) A few sounds written on bleach were written on the spot,maybe 2 or 3 and others were already started but were finished.

Like Kurt said he wanted to add a 45 second snippet from the Montage of Heck sound-collage as an Intro for "Love Buzz" but for the single version which was released in November 1988, the Sound-collage was cut down to 10 sec as orders of Sub Pop, and Kurt wanted to add that quirky 4track demo Song "Beans" on to Bleach but Sub Pop refuse it and thought Kurt was retarded for wanting to add that to the Album... I feel like if Kurt was given more Artistic Control "Bleach" would of been more of an experimental Scratch Acid type of Album (songs like Beeswax/Hairspray Queen) etc... But the way Bleach turned out its more in the 70s vain, like it's more like Black Sabbath.

I've heard a few stories living around the puget sound. One guy who worked with a friend of mine went to school with Kurt and said he was very quiet and smelled and was a strange kid. Everybody picked on him. When I lived in Olympia I used to frequent this music shop in Lacey called Music 6000 (amazing shop!) And one day I noticed his picture on the wall, with receipts all around it, in a frame. I asked the shop owner if those were really his signatures and the owner told me yes, he was friends with the band when they lived there. He said they would hangout after closing and sit around drinking and smoking, Kurt was very quiet and would sit on an amp quiet in thought. Very nice, but Kris was the vocal one. Then the last story I've heard was from a guy I worked with on a painting job. He used to work at a gas station in Seattle (I want to say around capital hill, but can't remember for sure) anyways Kurt always used to frequent this gas station. He would act very strange, tripping on acid, saying strange things. He always drove this beat up piece of shit car and would come by late at night when my coworker was working. My coworker didn't know he was famous until a bit later, but used to crack up at the site of "that beat up piece of shit car." Kurt would buy junk food snacks and cigarettes and split.

There’s video here on KZbin of the show that Bruce talks about. Concert occurred on November 27, 1989 at the Piper Club in Rome, Italy. Video is crappy VHS, but the sound is decent and the audience can be heard reacting to Kurt climbing onto the guitar amps during “Spank Thru”, near the end of the video. This incident was also briefly discussed in Michael Azerrad’s 1993 Nirvana bio, “ Come As You Are”. According to Kurt, Bruce’s first reaction after he told him he was quitting Nirvana was to ask him if he’d like to be a solo artist for Sub Pop.

@@ravenswood118 It has nothing to do with that. You’re just projecting because Kurt does get the god treatment from some fans and you’re obviously tired of that or think he’s “overrated” or whatever. He was a creative genius, not a god. That said, do your research about Pavitt. Read interviews with people that interacted with him in the early sub pop days. You’ll learn more about his relationship with Kurt and others in the Seattle scene. To put it diplomatically, he has a less than stellar reputation with honesty and integrity as a business man and a friend. I’m not saying he’s a bad person, I certainly don’t think that, especially since I don’t know him. However, those that knew/know him have plenty to say.

On November 27, 1989 Nirvana played at Piper Club, Rome, Italy. Which Kurt had a Nervous Breakdown and During "Spank Thru," Kurt Cobain smashed his Hagström II beyond repair, climbed up onto a tall speaker stack, and threatened to jump to his death. The following day November 28, 1989 Nirvana had a day off so Bruce Pavitt took Kurt Cobain around Rome, Italy and visits the Coliseum and St. Peter's Basilica. And Since Kurt had smashed his (white Univox Hi-Flier Phase 3 on 11/11/89 at Ecstasy, Berlin, West Germany and then his Red Hagström II on 11/27/89 Piper Club, Rome, Italy) Kurt didn't have a guitar for the rest of the tour, so Bruce Pavitt bought Kurt a 1980s Washburn Force 31 guitar. This guitar was used for five gigs total, before it was destroyed on December 3, 1989 at Astoria Theatre, London, UK - which was the last show of Nirvana's European Tour. The 5 shows Kurt used the Washburn Force 31 guitar at were these last 5 shows of the European Tour.... 11/29/89 - L'usine, Geneva, Switzerland. 11/30/89 - Rote Fabrik, Zurich, Switzerland. 12/01/89 - Fahrenheit, MJC Espace Icare, Issy-les-Moulineaux, France. 12/02/89 - Democrazy, Ghent, Belgium. 12/03/89 - Astoria Theatre (Lame Fest UK '89), London, UK.

Bruce’s opinion that Jack Endino is the star of Bleach is pure nonsense. Jack Endino says himself that he only recorded the band and didn’t do much. The band had it together and didn’t need a lot of studio time. Not taking his opinions very seriously. This coming from a guy who says Kurts songs were immature? And Mudhoneys were better? I don’t see how. There was a short time in my life I could listen to Mudhoney. But Bleach and Kurts songs are still timeless to me after 30 years. Also regarding Bruce, remember his company sub pop wouldn’t have survived without Nirvana.

Yeah that was kind of a weird comment. Nice guy, but he doesn't strike me as a man with great musical instinct like you'd hope for in a label head. Even a small label head. Studios charge by the hour. The fact they did it for 600 dollars wasn't Jack's magic, it was Kurt's. Kurt got a world class album done, quickly. But rest assured he knows Nirvana saved his ass in the end. Daniel uploaded another video with him talking about it.

I guess that music is really subjective, isn't it? The guy is saying that at that time, in 1989, most of his focus was on Mudhoney (3:42) and that Nirvana was an OK band, that Kurt had a great voice but that their songwriting was a liitle immature (6:57). I'm not familiar with Mudhoney's songs, so I looked them up to see what they were doing at that time, if they were really so much better than Nirvana in '89. I found out that around that time, they had a single titled "Touch Me I'm Sick". I can't say that it's bad (apparently Kurt Cobain loved the whole album) but comparing with what Nirvana was doing at that time, maybe I'm biased but I don't agree with this guy. If you don't know any of these bands and you listen to what he's saying here, you might think that Nirvana only started to write good or "mature" songs as he describes it, only when Nevermind was recorded and that Mudhoney had great songs already when Bleach came out. What about you, what do you think? Do you agree with him, that Nirvana's songwriting before Nevermind was "immature" and that Mudhoney were better at that time?

And yeah, I wish I was there or that I knew someone who was there at that time. I've always played in bands and I guess that it's the same everywhere: you have the "cool kids", the cool bands and then you have everybody else. I won't say that my songs are so much better but when I see what gets played on our local radio stations, when I see what posts on Facebook get shared and reposted by the people who work for the radio stations, it's always the same bands, always the "cool kids", even though most of their songs suck. How ever he's talking about the VERY beginning of nirvana in sub pop. At that time mudhoney were much more established. He never said "before nevermind" Bleach had a really good success and as he says at the end "it was nice to see them grow" Ps : I'm not sure where you are going with that radio and cool kid stuff ahaha You think mudhoney was commercial and not nirvana? 😂 Please come on ahah

@@Aniki82 I wasn't there, so I don't know but from what I understood (from what "Ramble Lucien Sanchez" said), Mudhoney was part of the "cool kids" and Nirvana was just an "OK" band from Aberdeen, so that's why I compared it with what I see around here: the "cool kids" get played on the radio while the bands that don't know the right people or bands that are not among the "cool kids" never get played on the radio. It has nothing to do with being commercial or radio friendly.

@Alan Walker: I hope you are only kidding. Making a deceased musical artist into a deity is just silly nonsense. Cobain would agree. I've got nothing against Nirvana. Kurt was a very gifted songwriter. But Nirvana and the entire Pacific NW scene was incredibly derivative and majorly over-hyped. That isn't to take away from the authenticity of Nirvana and their songs. But come on...Cheap Trick with a fuzz box and less production isn't the most original music. Not even in 1990.

As a musician this guy fucking bugs me man. If my management even thought about trying to tell me what goes on the record I would sack them. Preproduction in a studio with a third party (who is also a musical creative) can be really useful. However, having some corporate guys forcing my music into ‘radio friendly shifter units’ That I’m legally obliged to release as my own complete vision would drive insane.

In Nirvanas song Radio Friendly Unit Shifter he has a line: “Bi Polar opposites attract, all of a sudden my water broke”. Bipolar disorder is often associated with creativity and many creative geniuses in the past ( e.g. Beethoven) suffered from it. So this line is believed to be referring to how the opposite states of his depression and happiness combined with his creativity led to an explosion of creative music/thoughts that can be likened to the female process of water suddenly breaking before birth.

I have always been curious about that $600. Nowadays, 1 hour studio time is roughly between $100 and $300 if you are booking a cheap studio. Back in the 90's, it was a hell lot more expensive. So, what kind of deal is that? $600? Really? for a whole album and mastered and shit?...C'mon! a) They got that deal thru Sub-pop. b) They were superfriends with Endino c) It's a fable. Yes, like the Wishkah river one. I go with this one.

@grimgolf79
@grimgolf79 3 жыл бұрын
@@wvu05 10 hours? it takes at least 3 hours to set the microphones for the drums and to make some test-recordings to check the drum sound. and that´s not for prog-rock bands (they take 3 days for that...) and even then when you record the band live (like endino did with nirvana) you have to take some takes of the songs to have a little choice. then you record some additional guitars (even nirvana has additional guitar tracks) and last but not least the voice recordings. kurt was really quick with that. but you also have background vocals... all in all 10 hours seems a bit short for the whole recording. with mastering... forget it! XD i have no doubt that they recorded this album really really quick and very cheap, because they knew endino but not in 10 hours. no way. every producer or musician who made some recordings knows that. it is true that once that the settings are set you can record all songs in a row but even for that.. i don´t believe that :) but nevermind, the result was great!
@grimgolf79
@grimgolf79 3 жыл бұрын
@@wvu05 ok maybe he meant that the band recorded it in 10 hours so he calculated only the time the band needed to record the basic songs. that would be quick but makeable. but who cares.. there are lots of rumours and more about kurt even more about his death... i would´t take it too seriously. fact is that they were quick recorders and that they new their songs really good so that they wouldn´t need much takes for the recordings. so who needs to speculate about some hours more or less...

@@grimgolf79 The exact credit says "recorded by Jack Endino at Reciprocal Studios for $606.17." I can't remember if it was two days or three, but I'm guessing the mixing is not included in the time.

Endino wasn't working at a state of the art recording studio. In fact I'm pretty sure they recorded on 4 track. Just enough tracks for each instrument and Kurt's voice. Also they recorded quickly and I think they may pretty well have done 1 take for each song and moved on. They ran out of tape and actually have a fade out on one song because of this. Also there are a couple tracks Blew being one of them where the band was already in drop d tuning and not realizing they dropped down again which is why that song sounds so deep and heavy. They left it as is when they realized their mistake because funds were low. As a guy who knows about recording I can tell you that recording the tracks they recorded in 10 hours for that kind of money at what endino charged wouldn't have been inpossible. They also used some tracks from an earlier session that had dale cover on drums. $600 would've been a fortune for 3 broke guys from Aberdeen in 1989

Lol do u honestly believe he cared that much about the bands legacy to where he’d kill himself for it? It makes more sense that the industry did it not him. They were the ones that knew how much money could be made forever if they sacrificed him. He wanted to quit and be low profile while raising his kid, he wanted to do his own thing at his own pace one of those things being making music with Michael Stipe. He also wanted a divorce. Courtney Love was a propaganda agent she wasn’t just some random person who hit it big. Her and the music industry both had something to gain by doing this, they weren’t about to let Kurt turn all of this into a short lived fad with no legacy
