Actually, that's a fairly common musical theatre trope. Les Miserables is famous for this, but also shows like West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, and lesser known shows like Newsies, Anastasia, and Frozen. Lin Manuel Miranda is just taking a classic formula and applying it (which, in fairness, he does do A LOT), but he's using a tried-and-true method that's been around for decades. As an ex-theatre kid he's been pretty open about how much inspiration he takes from other shows and composers, and this is no exception.

Lin is pretty infamous for loving The Little Mermaid so Dos Oruguitas incorporating Under the Sea isn't exactly a surprise. Nor is his kid being named Sebastian as he's mentioned in plenty of interviews that he intentionally named his kid after Sebastian. Lin is also taking part in the score for the live action Little Mermaid and has said most of the songs are going to stay in the film, but they're just going to add a couple more songs. They're not touching up or changing any of the old ones either. With Lin, who is essentially a Little Mermaid super fan, at the helm of the score for the live action, I'm not worried about the music, but it's the script I'm worried about.

When you live in a hurricane region, they're a big part of life, they happen for a whole season, you track time by the big ones...eg Fabian knocked out the bridge to the airport, Emily was the bug hurricane the year I was born and the biggest one we'd ever had for a long long time. The first hurricane I remember was Felix and for my kid it's Humberto.

Lin is Puerto Rican. Hurricanes feature in our Arawak culture and are a part of life on the Island. (the word Hurricane literally comes from one of the Taíno gods' names, Juracán/Orkan, and the swirly weather symbol for hurricanes comes from the symbol of the goddess Guabancex) Makes sense he would call back to his roots.
