This is very true and probably it's a common challenge that all music writers are facing nowadays. Basically, melody comes from 8 notes : do re mi fa so la ti do. In addition to that, the variations you can have are the rhythms. For new age and contemporary music, the rhythm should be kept as simple as possible to create cantabile tunes. However, if you get maths involved to do all the combinations and permutations, you realize that there is only a certain limit. It's getting harder and harder for composers to come up with something new but, at the same time, elegant tunes.

A lot of really famous musicians only use 2-3 chords in most of their songs. Yeah chords are important to the structure of the song but there’s also tempo, lyrics, rhythm, melody, harmony, bridge etc. . Yes it would be great if pop musicians were more diverse with chords but just because the chords are the same doesn’t mean it’s the same song or effort wasn’t put into writing it.
