Happy New Year, and thank you for joining me in this review-of-2023 knitting episode. If you've seen my previous episodes, you'll have seen and heard some of it before, but I do try to draw some (new) overall conclusions because things happen, simply, with the passing of time.
It did the little 'fashion show-y' thing again, modelling each garment in order for you to see the fit, but I did it outside because the light was much better than inside (at this time of year, here). This meant that I left out modelling the three summer tops as it would have been just a tad too cold. If you therefore haven't seen me wear those and would like to check out the fit, I wear the first two mentioned in knitting episode 7 and the third in episode 8. Just FYI. Thank you for watching - and for being here.

One of my words for knitting is meditative. The rhythms, counting, and even watching patterns materialize as you create colour work can be like looking at mandala.

Helle, this was so so wonderful!!! I loved EVERYTHING you made ❤❤❤ Your aesthetic is the epitome of elegance! Also, I follow the motto of “our knitting is like an artist’s paintings. Greetings from South Korea! I found that your aegyo knit sweaters match the name of the patterns so well. The names are in Korean words. Obba [Op pa] refers to older brothers, sarang to love, and bawi to huge rocks. I especially like the bawi sweater in light grey, like the huge granite commonly seen from Korea. 70% of this country is mountain.

Hi. Your knittings are gorgeous. You made so many complicated and beautiful sweaters. You can be proud of them. I am knitting again in the last two years after watching Fruity Knitting podcast and started to crochet a blanket which I gave to my 12 year old granddaughter. I have made a beautiful blanket for my daughter in Rios yarns in three colors that she likes and made shawls for myself and other things. Happy New Year 2024 and ALWAYS. Take Care. 😊

Hej Helle! 🌟 Your review of all the beautiful knits was great, love listening to your thoughts about knitting and life in general. Thank you for showing your garments worn and for not rushing through. My words are: meditation (for being slow and focused), curiosity (to all new techniques and patterns) and joy (if knitting alone, with friends or with a good podcast) Have a wonderful 2024 🎉 The last scene was breathtaking ❄️☺️

My mom never found “perfect,” though she tried all her life, it made me sad to see her “never-quite-contentment. She passed that on to her kids when we were young-but I’m a recovered perfectionist. Much softer and lighter (and realistic).

My daughter lives in Seattle and my best friend lives right outside of Seattle on Bainbridge Island. So I get to there at least once a year. The last time I was last May. I didn't know about the Lamb and Kid then. I was still 'mourning' the closing of Church Mouse Yarn and Tea Shop that I used to visit each time there. I discovered a new yarn shop on Bainbridge called La Mercerie. It's also a lovely shop with wonderful staff. I was so excited to find the Mercerie that I didn't explore further. Now I'm REALLY looking forward to my next visit when I can go to both the Lamb and Kid and La Mercerie! Beyond that Bainbridge Island is just a wonderful place even without yarn shops. I'm so glad I have my best friend living there who is always happy to have me come visit! This was a wonderful episode! Thanks so much. My favorite knit from 2023 was the Korshavn sweater. I should have posted a picture on Instagram for the Nordic KAL. But somehow knitting is much easier for me than technology (I always struggle and need help from younger friends when I want to post something on Instagram). Greetings from Herndon, Virginia.

Bestest wishes for the coming year Helle❤ it's always lovely to catch up with you and your knitting journey. As ever, inspiring and thought provoking. My knitting is also a constant in my life. It holds hands with the history of the women in my family and their own creativity. I think it is a practice worth preaching about. Not only for the finished product, but also for our mental health and that with each project (useful, wearable, practical or a little frippery) we get better at it. Our practice makes progress, and with that progress we hone our skills. Here in Australia, there is a saying that goes like this... Good, Better, Best. Never let it rest, Until your good is better, And your better is best I try to improve my skills with some projects and test knits, and at other times I just want some easy stitching that I don't have to think about too much. It's relaxing to work on an easy project. The flip side is challenging ourselves with more complicated projects. Both are equally important and valuable for us, as creative, imaginative beings.

I totally agree with the comment using meditative as a descriptor, in fact that's my first word about knitting. I love your finished objects from last year. The Weekender was my first ever knitted sweater. I don't reach for it very often either, likely because the fit is not as good for me as I would like - possibly due to my inexperience with knitting sweaters at the time and a wrong size choice. I agree that it was an easy and fun knit. I also like your word Nordic. Even though I do not live in a Scandinavian country like you do, it is cold here -- -36 Celsius today! My skin tone is supposedly 'spring' so very soft, light gray looks nice close to my face. It seems more about shades of certain colours for me - i.e. green is not good for me but a really soft green (sage-like) can look pretty. It's all about the underlying skin tone, I've been told. Anyway, I could go on and on. Happy New Year and thank you for sharing your knitting journey! I also enjoyed your video of Christmas in England. I love England, but have only been there once. It was great to revisit some of the more outstanding spots in London that you highlighted in your video. :D

Your knits are beautiful! The perfectionism discussion can be a very deep one. I absolutely understand having high standards for our knits - no sense in having a very expensive piece that is only okay. There is a point where it is crippling, however. Personally, I suffer from "perfectionism paralysis" where I don't even start projects because I already know it is not going to be perfect. I've been working on getting over that. Mistakes are made, stitches get twisted, but I love your message of hope and making sure our knits are meaningful and that love is put into them. It truly makes a difference!

Thank you for another great episode filled with thoughts that are so close to my heart, knitting ideas that I wish I have already had on my needles, or must acquire the yarn for. I totally agree with the quote you have mentioned in the beginning. I think I may suffer with the perfectionist mindset myself fearing constantly that the message I am trying to get across to the world would be read wrong or misunderstood and because I mostly don’t get it as perfect as I would like it to be I hide away in a safe and cozy square where I escape to my not always so perfect or widely appreciated knitting. It is funny that word escape first came to my mind when you have mentioned what words would describe my experience with knitting. It is a happy escape and I enjoy every minute of it. Even the frogging parts. On another note, I am so happy to see you found the use for a cowl. Yey! It made me so happy to see you wearing it. I hope it kept you warm in this icy bath. 🥶❤️🤴🎉🎊

Happy 2024. The constant output of fantastic patterns is tantalizing, but I manage only one or two sweaters a year along with a few small items. As I am listening to you today the word ‘edit’ has come to mind. Sometimes editing is imposed due to constraints of time or resources and sometimes as an active process of whittling down a broad selection of options to get just what is wanted. Regardless of the angle, editing usually produces better outcomes in the end. What I am enjoying in your 2023 collection of knitted pieces is the sense of elegance overall with a twist of whimsy. I love all of the Aegyo pieces. I really like her aesthetic. To further describe what knitting means to me, requires an open ended essay, so I will sign off with warm wishes to your lovely country upon the coronation your new king and queen. 🇩🇰

Meditative Slow Colour. I get something meditative out of every stitch, creating a fabric with amazing colour. This craft feeds my soul and helps me be content with life. ❤. I knit four sweaters last year, the most I’ve done. I can’t imagine completing as many as you did. I tried though, since I have several sweaters in various degrees of completion. 😂 it is an exploratory process experimenting with different patterns, different yarns. I want to try all the yarns. I have been enjoying your podcasts since this past summer. I am looking forward to seeing the summer cardigan you knit to go with your sleeveless tops. I have knit summer tops in Linen and cotton but never sleeveless ones because I am in my 70’s and only show my arms if I am home or it is very very hot. There are so many sleeveless tops and I would love to knit them. If I had a cardigan to wear with them I would happily knit a few. My favourite sleeve length for summer topis 3/4 length. I think this length looks very stylish. I also love wearing linen tops. I find them very cool. Interesting that you are having a cold spell. We are too in British Columbia, Canada. It is -20C today, but it has been as low as -36C. Great knitting weather as it is too cold to stay outside for very long.

For me knitting is also saying "I love you" to my children, my husband and my mum and saying " I care for you " to my friends. I enjoy seeing them going to school and to work wraped in my knits. My daughter told me she felt my love wearing a chale i made for her. It made me so happy. I felt her love too. That is one of the reason i love knitting.

I always enjoy your podcasts. Thank you! I love your serene spiritual philosophy and how it flows and integrates into your knitting. I have always thought that one should strive for excellence rather than perfection, because failure to achieve perfection leads to self-recrimination - a negative state of being. On the other hand, doing one’s very best leaves room both for minor human errors and an opportunity for improvement. Our knitting journey can then be seen as part of our overall learning experience, offering a sense of achievement and real delight in the finished article. ‘Every stitch you knit can be a self-care practice. Knitting is our constant companion as we grow and expand our capacity for joy.” ― Brandi Cheyenne Harper, Knitting for Radical Self-Care: A Modern Guide

What a nice treat to find you this morning, recapping your year’s worth of knitting. I love seeing your sweaters that are both comfortable and classy. A very useful combination for me. I haven’t come up with the words that would describe what knitting means for me, but I think it is a useful exercise to do. Thank you for talking about the juxtaposition of fear and joy. One holds us back, cripples the creative process, affects our relationships with others. The other lets us grow, feel contentment, stay engaged in life. Fiber Arts is such a great medium to experience and practice joy, and I'm so grateful for your share of your beautiful work and philosophy!

Being present, in the moment. You can't make a decent job of a garment is your mind is miles away. That is the most important take-away for me. It saved my life during lockdown❤ much love and all the best wishes for 2024 ❤❤❤

2023 was a good year for your knitting! Beautiful garments in sophisticated colors. Thank you for modeling with your hair pulled back so we can easily see the necklines.

Sorry I am late to comment. I asked a question about the Bawi sweater in one of your videos and I feel like you addressed it in this one. I think I unraveled my sweater 3 times before I decided to trust the process and just knitted it according to the pattern and in the end I’m so happy with the results. What you say about trusting the pattern rings true. This is only the 2nd sweater I have knitted. Like you, I had only knitted accessories and became a knitter again. After raising 3 kids and then taking care of my mother (by the way, she was born and raised in Sweden, came to the US at the age of 28 and only stayed in the US after meeting my father..so I feel like Nordic knitting must be in my blood 😂, my grandmother taught me the basics during one of her visits).. I feel like now is my time to explore my creativity. I’ve always wanted to turn knitting into something more tangible than a hat or scarf. I have to laugh at what you said about knitting your hair into your work, as I am just now trying to pull my hair out of the sweater..along with some dog hair 😂

One of my words is mother. She wasn’t a constant or even a tremendously productive knitter. Nor am I, but what I can find time and energy to learn and produce is tremendously satisfying. You are very encouraging!

That's an incredible amount of knitting for a 'slow' knitter. Lovely work! After seeing all those warm sweaters, the dip in that freezing water - yikes!! I've heard it's good for one's health, but definitely not something I would do. I'm good with an even 80 degrees.

Love your knitteds, blouse no 1 is very lovely, also Joni ( i'm going to make the back of mine smaller when I knit it again, maybe leave out 10 sts in the back) I used Garn linen 100%. Love your wardrobe and colors you have chosen. lovely video, and your knits are all elegant I believe.

Thank you so much for this video! It is very informative and helpful and I specially love that you share about the itchiness factors as I find some itchy as well🙏🏼 Also I am also very much about neutrals but these 2 pieces really make me want to try neons 💖☺️ Thank you for the inspiration ✨

Loved the thoughtful question at the end! Knitting for me is 1)Fantasy. Because I often dream of being in a cold remote location that is peaceful and full of nature…somehow knitting transports me there. I love yarn from faraway places like Ireland or Sweden or Canada. 2)Rebellion. It’s my quiet protest against modern conveniences, machines, industry, corporations and synthetics. And finally 3)Creative. Often it is the daydreaming and imagining how I will create something that gives me the most pleasure. My small stash of beautiful (and pricey!) yarn & fibers is inspiring and wonderful to contemplate in its unmade state. Brings me much joy. I love beautiful tools and creative ways to store and display both so I can see them while I work.

Oh my goodness, ice bathing! You brave Nordic woman!! I absolutely loved seeing you sit between your two stacks of knits. So satisfying and cozy 😊!! Knitting is to me: exhilarating, meditative and satisfying. I think enjoying to strive to do things as well as we can, can bring great joy and satisfaction. But being dissatisfied, unhappy or even angry with ourselves if we do not achieve perfection… yes, that is more negative and punishing than it needs to be. I always love your quotes, thank you Helle!!
