Very well explained. There are several types of electronic thermostat designs. There is a thermostat using a K factor type resistance wire. It changes milli volts that are sensed using op amps, and the output is fed to an A to D circuit and software is applied to determine the temperature. There is a pre-scale system in the software that is set for calibration. This gets complicated... In the new ovens I have see these circuit boards fail, and they are not designed to be serviceable. Very complicated and expensive! I like the older appliances. They lasted longer, were more reliable, a lot easier to service, and a lot less in cost to service! Nothing beats hard mechanical switches, some relays with electromagnet activation using hard contacts, hard switches, simple pilot lamps, screw in fuses, simple burners, and elements, and so-on... The wiring was not overly complicated to follow, and many of the stoves had the wiring diagram on the rear panel. I am in my 70s. About 50 years ago I worked in service centres. Some of them were servicing electrical appliances. I serviced stoves at times. These were very simple for me to service.

If Im not mistaken, many "pro ranges' use analog thermostats. That's how I came upon your channel looking for any info on how to test mine. Regrettably, even though my thor oven is only 4 years old. I can't seem to find a replacement. Thanks for the info.

If it is analog you might be able to rig one of a different brand to work as it is an on-off thermostat.

Can confirm. Thor/Kucht/NXR ranges use a version of these thermostats made by Robertshaw.

Thanks for detailed explanation, I have question, can you please made a video about possible options to install electric fan inside the oven to make it induction, some ovens having no fan installed, just please explain which components we need to have, fan, wire, switch, relay for 2 speeds and wmfromwhere get the electric connnections. Thank you in advance.

How do you test this type of oven thermostat with a multimeter?
@smollandeАй бұрын
Quick question - does the bulb go inside the oven where the food in or is it outside of that compartment like near an air vent? Trying to fit one of these into my oven. It currently doesnt have a thermostat so I figure I could just wire one up in series with the timer (which acts like an on off switch).

Great video BUT can you PLEASE explain to me how does it work for a gas oven that doesn't have a pilot light? (I have to manually ignite it using an elongated lighter) You mentioned in your explanation that once the thermostat achieves the set temp it goes off and then turns on again once temp dips... How will the bake heating element turn back on again if it cuts off the gas supply? Really looking forward to your answer!

My Tappan stove is older than your example. It's 30 years old and has pilot light one for the oven and two for the stove eyes. Thermostat set to 500 and oven will get to only 400 my wife normally bakes biscuits at 450. Bought it special with no electric to use in Indonesia. Going to try adjust the thermostat screw but it's hot now from baking. Signed still cooking on Java after 30 years.

My griddle thermostat on my 16 yo Thermador range is working intermittently. Thermador discontinued the part, and I can't find it anywhere. You mentioned trying a different thermostat as it functions as an on/off switch for the gas. What watch-outs are there if I would do this? Would Temperature not matching the dial settings be the main thing to worry about?

Question - when setting a temperature from cold the indicator light should come on at any temp selected but doesn't until I turn the knob to approx 200c, the oven heats but not what I would call fully even if I turn temp knob to full temp ??? Oh yeah by the way I've just renewed a blown oven element too

Hi dan, could you please tell me how to take care deck oven analog temp controIler? I already broke it twice. My bread products need different2 temp, so I change the temp up and down many times, at the end if I need 100degree I need to set it on 150 to start the fire. Its that true, better if we switch off oven power than roll the controller up and down many times? Thank you dan, sorry for my english.

Super interesting! Thank you! I have a question! Can I do this myself? There is another video that explains that but now that I know there is gas inside the tube, I'm not sure I want to try it myself. I'm good with fixing things but not very experienced and I'm worried that some of those screws are soldered, or that I'll mix up the wires!

Okay Dan I have a question can you calibrate an analog thermostat and if so how can you do that
@danjiles Жыл бұрын
Some stats do have a calibration screw and can be adjusted. It’s sorta like trying to calibrate an ice maker though, a small adjustment can create a huge difference in temperature. Or in the case of the ice maker, it could flood the freezer with too much water.
@reginafarinholt93313 жыл бұрын
Can this type of thermostat be adjusted? We have a brand new Thor gas range with oven and the temperature in the oven is 50 degrees too low. We’ve taken it apart and it looks like there are two adjustment screws but I’m not sure if I should tighten or loosen them...any help is appreciated

Hi Dan, I have a question for you!!! I live in India and have what is effectively a large toaster oven. The thermostat goes up to 230C, but my Dutch oven in the oven never goes above 170C. I am thinking about replacing the thermostat to something more accurate. Is it hard to find these electric sensor thermostats on the market?

i have a stove the doe not cook food all the way even with the temp set on high could it be the thermostat
@OilBaron1002 жыл бұрын
This video is very helpful! My oven is not heating up, and it has the same type of thermostat that is featured in your video. Now I understand why you have to buy the temperature sensor together with the turning switch (ie: cannot buy the temperature sensor separately). The heating element tests fine (24.7 ohms resistance). Is there any way that I can test the thermostat? Or do I just have to replace it and hope that it is the cause of the fault?

Hi Dan, your video is great. A quick question: My oven has a bunch of wires. Will the copper wire of this sensor get really hot and burn other electronic wires if they touch each other?
@danjiles2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never seen that happen. But anything is possible. The tube should be cooler once it’s out of the range cavity. So I would say no.
@durraaltai26693 жыл бұрын
I have one of those. How do I test it using a Voltmeter? I know the Voltmeter needs to be set to Ohms and set to lowest point. But, where do I connect the probes into this old thermostat?
@richhagenchicago3 жыл бұрын
The thermostat is basically a switch that switches dependent upon the temperature. If I recall correctly it will be open circuit when the oven is off and it will close when you start the oven until the temperature reaches the set point and then the switch will open. On newer ovens, often their is a thermocouple or thermister instead of the gas filled tube which is read by a logic chip and used to throw a relay to accomplish the same thing. You would need to find and refer to the specifications for the part for your specific oven.
@thehobe21113 жыл бұрын
I was surprised to see that my 1999 Thermador was still using the bulb and capillary system. If I had to replace it, it would be over $1000 for a new replacement which is ridiculous-some GE replacements are $25! I have to be very careful servicing the gas control knobs/electronics on the same front panel while the copper expansion lead is flexed and strained during servicing. I can purchase electronic meters measuring wider temperatures for under $100 complete.

I do not know about yours, but some of them have calibration screws on the old analog, and the digital may have adjustable pots on the circuit board for calibration.
