dont those magnets are too weak youll just knock them away from the correct time if you try to feel them without being very careful everytime. which sounds like a major hassle. overdesigned garbage. just go for a simpler, cheaper braille watch that has fewer moving parts and is designed for function over form.

And it is truth in advertising. Whether you can see or not, or whether you can read braille or not (because let's face it, not every visually empaired person can read Braille, especially if they lose their eyesight later in life), you can still tell time. When something is accessible for everyone, it's something I can't help but applaud.

They're such dependable timepieces, back in the early 90's _Michael Schumacher himself_ stuck Casio watches onto his steering wheels to have an in-car stop-watch while qualifying. And keep in mind this was before digital displays became the standard in F1 so this was very forward-thinking.

as someone who is visually impaired (although not all that much just enough i need assistance) this type of thing is super cool and def follows the "curb cut" effect where things that are made more accessible make more than just the intendeds life easier (curb cuts for people who have a hard time moving around and those who need wheels like strollers wheelchairs and bikes all use them) dankpods bought the watch because he liked the look only after finding out its a HUGE advancement in accessibility (a huge amount of "blind" people cant even read braille) thank you dankpods for sharing this awesome piece of unassuming tech

She still calls me "Her little eye doctor" even though I'm 26 and haven't seen her and years. I think I'm going to try and get one of these for her. Thanks for reminding me of the blind. Dank, you can learn grade 1 or uncontracted braille in an afternoon. Contracted braille like you'd find in public would be a lot more memorization though. @@ZtereoHYPE the easiest exposure for a sighted person would be learning braille by sight. Look up the alphabet and memorize the shapes. Tactile practice for grade 1 would be harder to come by. Most braille in public is going to be grade 2. Even the sign for the Men's room uses dots 2 and 6 for the contraction for en as an example. There are braille displays for computers, but those cost money, and I'd imagine they'd default to grade 2 because otherwise it'd take an eternity to read anything.

My dad is blind and for his last birthday he got a wristwatch. It looks just like a normal watch but he can pop it open like a pocket watch and just feel where the pointers are. So I feel like the one you have is just an excuse to make a watch for the visually impaired with a larger price tag. It don’t need to be too fancy. Also, quite funny actually, my dad learned Braille a couple of months ago but can’t use his left hand because of the hard skin on his fingertips from playing the guitar for 40 odd years, but still he claims he can read Braille faster than he ever could read with his eyes.

Finally I can nerd out! I’m partly blind, and I work with the blind and visually impaired on the US. Your point about the SCREAMING WATCHES is very true, and that’s why many fully blind people don’t actually look at their phones. Many phones and computers have a feature called screen curtain that blacks out the screen, but allows audio, so they can discreetly use their phone with just gestures and headphones. I knew a girl who hardly too her phone out of her pocket because she could use it IN HER POCKET. Assistive technology in general is crazy because it’s this paradox of genius and “why doesn’t something exist to fix this simple problem”. I think videos like this are very important because the more sighted people are aware, the more support we can get to help us find new solutions. On that note, fun fact, VoiceOver (apple’s screen reader) allows you to use an Apple Watch without touching it, just hand gestures. It’s super cool and I advise you look up a KZbin or find a buddy who knows how to do it. Final note, Braille is actually only known by 10% of blind people and is falling out of fashion as companies like Apple make technology a better option, and Apple is the leader is mainstream accessibility that’s FREE. Braille has several “grades”, with higher grades being more compact, and some being specialized for things like coding and math. It makes things very confusing and a generally outdated system Love to see it! (P.S. my favorite part was watching dankpods trying to read Braille sideways)

It’s such a nice watch, because it’s accessible for just about anyone with a wrist. Blind, hard of hearing, literally anyone who can wear a watch can wear this and know what’s going on. Plus, it looks cool as shit for the people who can see, whether it’s you or the people around you. No noise, nothing too bulky, normal battery and design, and doesn’t need to be fluent in braille either, unlike other blind oriented touch based watches. Not every blind person knows braille, either because it’s difficult, or because they don’t have the time or energy to learn a new alphabet and memorise it. This can help when you either don’t know braille yet, or find difficulty learning it in general.

@SusanIvanova2257

That is indeed a neat looking watch. In case anyone needs a description: the whole watch is made from brushed, matte silver metal. The body is round but thicker than most other watches. The band made from a lot of tiny metal segments has a woven look to it and moves more like a stiff fabric than a metal wristband made with larger segments would. The markings on the watchface are actually very similar in look to other minimalist watches, small strips for every five minutes, larger ones at the three, six and nine. The twelve is a triangle. Aside from being slightly raised these markings and the crown of the watch are also the only parts of the corpus that are polished smooth and reflect light, making them visually distinct details. Inside of the markings is a circular recessed track in which the minute hand ball bearing sits. The channel with the hour hand ball bearing runs along the outside of the corpus. The balls are also smooth and shiny. Yes, I chuckled typing that out. Overall I would describe it as a minimalist, modern and industrial style time piece. It is unique and visually distinct but not in a flashy or outrageous way. Unless someone takes a close look at it or is a watch nerd they may very well not even realise that it is not a standard design. It's classic enough that it would go very well with a suit or in a business context. On a dainty wrist or with a more feminine outfit it would be stronger contrast and therefore more eyecatching.

Man, I really want one of these, but I'm not sure if I can justify buying nice watches at the moment. I want to support this company because while I am sighted, my eyesight is so bad I literally can't see further than maybe 3 inches in front of my face without glasses, so my eyesight feels like a disability at times, especially when I wake up in the morning and can't see any defined shapes until I find my glasses. This looks like a very high quality watch, and it is certainly a cause which I would love to support, but 300+ dollars for a watch is a bit tough to stomach for me, especially with clocks all around me all day long like you mentioned in the intro. Maybe someday I'll get one, I'd sure be glad to own one.

So 21:46 = (two-finger tap) long vibration + long vibration + short vibration (21) + (two-finger double tap) 4xlong vibration + 6xshort vibration (46) = 21:46 Long vibrations count 10s Short vibrations count 1s Works a charm

I play drums and I still wear a watch. I just tighten that bad boy on there and then sleep with it for a few days so I get used to it. It's one of those fancy-shmancy Casios that tells you the time in multiple time zones and even shows you on a map that you can't actually see in detail unless you're actually a mouse which time zone is highlighted.

Being visually impaired, I love that a huge channel is actually taking the time to understand what the use case of something like this is. I've had fair share of talking electronics lol. I used to have a watch that, like you said, went "IT'S SIX O'CLOCK PM!!!" I also had an unofficial apple clock (as it was shaped like an apple - dunno why tho) but it went one step further and used to yell the temperature as well. People really take their eyesight for granted and don't think that it could be them. I would kill for something like this tbf. I bought a Huawei watch as i could change the faces so that I could see it.

If your getting into the watch world, look up the Bulova accutron space view. The original one from the 60’s used 2 tuning forks to resonate at just the right frequency to convert electricity to mechanical motion of the hands. Was one of the first stepping stones towards quartz watches and were the most accurate wrist watches at the time.

Well thank you for telling me about those, I'm not disabled but they do look really cool. And I work a clean room so my shoes must be white and they are available in white. When I leave the building on breaks I have to swap to my street shoes, and those look easy to swap in and out of quickly, and they are runners as well. They basically check all the dots for what I'm looking for, unfortunately I just bought my shoes for this year so I'll have to wait another so my workplace can buy them for me (partially)

Honestly, being able to know the time without glancing at your watch is a super cool thing to be able to do. Apple watches have a feature I think called "taptic time" where if you hold two fingers to the watch face, it'll tap out the digits in either binary or decimal on your wrist. Switched to a galaxy watch cuz I have an Android now and can't find something like it, it's the main feature I've been missing.

The best bit about a watch like this is that it probably has WAY fewer moving parts than a traditional analog watch. If you've ever seen watch repair, disassembly, or the like, you know that an analog watch is insanely complicated with lots of teeny-tiny gizmos that you have to know exactly where they all go, or, heaven forbid, know what they're called in case one of those tiny, delicate parts needs to be replaced because you lost it in the carpet, it broke, or it rusted to nothing. This guy looks like it would just be a set of timing gears and a couple of magnets, which would still be a lot of parts, but not literally dozens of them, including actual synthetic sapphires. Excellent!

I can say that this watch deserves the highest credit because most sorts of things that are intended to make things easier for the disabled make things worse for everybody else while this one not only performs its intended function very well, it also has benefits to the ordinary user inasmuch as it facilitates checking the time on the sly, which is very useful in certain social situations.

Yeah, I think I have mine in a box somewhere because of this. I have good eyesight, but I preordered one when the company first started because I also thought it was a cool design and concept. Whenever I tried to use it without looking though I just ended up knocking the ball off the magnet, and it was really hard to tell the actual position it was supposed to be in.

"Aren't we sick of buying cheap rubbish? Get something that's worth keeping" Good way to put it. As much as i enjoy all the tech and electronics we have available nowadays, it's just a shame how many industries run on selling you junk and then preparing to sell you the replacement for said junk as soon as you leave the shop nowadays, but the world of wristwatches has done good job steering clear of that, and that is very refreshing and quite the welcome contrast

This design makes my little industrial designer heart so happy. Like you can tell how much intention went into this. It’s simple and elegant and does what it’s supposed to. It also really speaks to inclusive design. Like you said, visually impaired people can use it but so can anyone else. We need more designs in the world that are able to be universally used.

I've lived with vision problems my whole life. Clocks and watches, especially analogue ones were annoying as hell. The markings on an analogue watch were always way too hard to see. Teachers and old people would get mad at me when I asked them to read the time on the analog clock at the other end of the room. "Why don't you know how to read an analog clock! Young people don't know anything!" I know how to read one, I just can't see it. I would kill for one of these. The rose gold version looks so good, just wish I could afford it. I'm glad to find out analogue isn't always my enemy.

I've seen a similar watch out in the wild years ago that used touch, albeit not as nice. I think there are quite a few cheaper ones where you flip up the watch cover so you can feel the actual hands. EDIT: Also seems there are quite a few knockoffs of this watch, but the bearings probably suck so they're probably not better than an old school tactile watch.

I'm a big watch enthusiast so seeing a watch on the channel is really cool. I've been aware of this watch for a while, and while its functionality is pretty cool underneath its just a fairly cheap swiss quartz mechanism thats been modified. You can get some pretty good watches for the same price and even some fully mechanical watches too. Would be really cool to see some vintage or mechanical watches on the channel- they are essenstialy just tiny very complicated machines that you wear on your rist. Also great video!
