I'm from a small state near the outskirts of India where it's hard to start a business here and get a really well paid job except for the mainstream jobs clerks, doctors, teachers, etc the boring stuff... Any hint on how I can become even 10% or 5% heck even 1% of what you are

I really enjoyed watching this. I love the respect you give for BJJ/grappling sport while also staying true to your individual art of JKD. Borrow from others, see what works and what doesn't. That's a powerful and transferable philosophy for martial arts, business and life in general. You really care about teaching self defense and not a combat sport. The fact that you're giving out this valuable content for free is admirable. You could be saving people's lives with the information you're giving us, assuming the viewer applies/implements it into practice. Really love what you're doing here, Sifu!

That can apply if your opponent THINK that they can do grappling, but if you facing someone who ARE a ground fighter, those technique won't applied. But again, if you are in real survival conditions, nothing is impossible because real fight is really really different from a combat sport.

Great video on Grappling techniques. I am happy to see you doing the full gamut of Martial Arts and Fighting. A lot of people have never been in a real street fight. They should be glad. Its a very unpredictable situation. Even for an experienced fighter if someone gets hit with a good punch they can be taken out quickly. Most street fighters have 3 or 4 moves they use and the rest is anything goes from weapons, to bottles, bats, chains, etc. I've been in a few throughout the years on the streets of Chicago and they've all been quickly ended from my part and i was fine. The truth is the longer a street fight goes the more chance of serious injury or death will occur for someone. Multiple fighters on one is no exception to the rule, you need to take them out quickly and you will be surprised how good you will perform when you've done good training with good teachers. It will just come out and you will react and deal with the situation. There is no time for thinking its strictly reaction and your training will show. I'm glad to see Sifu Quintero and Sifu Lok talk about this subject. Its a complex loaded question because of many people studying Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), Jiu-jitsu and even Judo. If someone is good and they know some good moves you can be in trouble. But its nice to see how Sifu Quintero was able to deal with some of the ground techniques. I have always felt that if Bruce Lee had lived longer we would have seen JKD to evolve into a more complex martial art taking everything into context. He was with us so such a short time in life. But his knowledge and students like you and Sifu Quintero have done the art justice and helped it to move forward. What i love about Bruce Lee is how he was open to learning other arts and using what he found in them to extend the capabilities of JKD making it a more awesome martial art. We can see the things he got from Ed Parker with Kenpo Karate and Dan Inosanto and the Filipino Martial Arts including Eskrima and Pencak Silat. Bruce Lee was blessed to have also been able to work with so many martial artists and their styles. And then give back to the world by incorporating more into JKD. Keep up the awesome work and training Sifu Quintero and Sifu Lok.

The late Larry Hartsell (one of two men Dan Inosanto said he'd want in a bar fight with him; I’ll let you guess the other one) was really the go-to guy for JKD grappling-Bruce encouraged him to pursue it and he always talked about how much Bruce was working on grappling before he died. Dan was told to investigate Indian wrestling, since Lee was a big admirer of the Great Gama and, of course, trained in judo and catch wrestling with Gene Lebell, Small Circle Jujitsu with Wally Jay, and more judo with Hayward Nishioka. He also loved pro-wrestling, so he no doubt picked stuff up from the TV and, again, from ring veteran Lebell. And he was good friends with Black Belt publisher Mito Uyehara, an aikidoka, so I'm quite sure he picked that up too, along with chin na, silat, and escrima. So Bruce was at least EXPOSED to a lot more grappling than most people think-but how good was he? Not sure. It's easy to compare the Little Dragon to a gunfighter, but to me he was more like a gambler who perhaps kept his best, most unexpected cards close to his vest. He'd let you THINK you knew what he was holding in his hand, but was it? Maybe...maybe not. But to go with the gunfighter analogy, there’s this quickdraw scene at the end of Quigley Down Under (GREAT Western) where-SPOILER ALERT!-Tom Selleck is forced to gun down the bad guy with a pistol, even though he’s only used a rifle through the whole film. As he’s dying, the bad guy-who’s a pistol expert-looks up at Selleck in disbelief, and the response is, “Said I never had much use for one. Never said I didn’t know how to use it.” Hmmmm…

As I have progressed through the techniques and drills, I visualize and analyze which techniques are appropriate for competition as opposed to self-defense, and I have also analyzed which techniques apply to both kinds of scenarios. I enjoyed watching this video. Please make more regarding engagement of multiple attackers, as well as dealing with grappling in self-defense scenarios. Thank you Dan!

Nice video and insights. I took a krav maga class for a year and we emphasized that hip bump to unbalance an attacker, you can practice it like a hip bridge, push off the ground. I also noticed how pulling someone tight to you can protect from punches a bit, then you can bite and push your hips up at an angle to reverse the mount then you are on top. Another big point was to keep your elbows down so it prevents the attacker from getting so high up on your chest (versus keeping them on your pelvis). Your elbows block their knees from riding up your torso. I want to practice and brainstorm things some more, in wing chun school we rarely work on it and also need to work on getting back up while protecting your head. Plus I noticed that you can do straight punches on your back just like standing, but I need some focus mitt and partner practice to see about the angles and reach for me. I love learning about other styles and blending them in to improve my skills. Thank you for the video and channel.

Great video as always. Of course respect to the good grapplers as well as the good stand up artists. This insight/training gives options to avoid the committed grapple and to keep moving, hitting and get back up. As those that comment on depending on the skill of the grappler of not working or not, it is the same if two grapplers are at it and the other more skilled. There is never one answer to all, this is a great point and concept to include in training, Bravo.

Good morning from Saskatchewan, Dan. Thank you for acknowledging Brazilian Jiujitsu. Sifu Octavio is correct to engage his feet to stop mount attempts. However, as a practitioner, an eye gouge won't stop me from passing the legs and doing the same to an opponent. Sifu's mount escape may work if the attacker is untrained and off-balance. Please consider featuring a BJJ practitioner in this self-defense scenario. I will work Sifu's rotational concepts into my open guard. Oss ;-)

Hooking the attackers leg with your own (your ankle outside of attackers ankle. i.e your right ankle their left ankle) will anchor that leg and give your shift more leverage as the attacker wont be able to widen their base. keep your foot on the ground and close to the knee the better. (bjj tech) sorry if its a bad explanation.

The idea of simultaneous escape & attack makes sense to me, but against even a good high school or collegiate wrestler, if they take you down successfully (please don't count on never being taken down, every striker in the 1st few UFCs counted on that, too), you may be stunned/have the wind knocked out of you. It makes sense to me to actually train in something like BJJ so you're really familiar with it (as well as learning different techniques you can add to your own arsenal), looking at it from the sidelines & telling yourself "well, if they did that I'd do this or that [by the way, a grappler can bite, gouge eyes, grab ears, etc., too]" doesn't give you a realistic sense of how difficult grappling can be to deal with. Even Bruce Lee saw the value in training with guys like Gene LeBell, Wally Jay, & judo black belts in Seattle, he was aware that your personally preferred/ideal fighting methods may not always be an option.

Lee’s fighting style incorporated the key fact that most real fights end up on the ground. Lee’s choreographed fight scenes were realistic because of this. Could he really win a stand up fight against Kareem Abdul Jabbar? Probably not, but he could stay with him enough and eventually choke him out.

Im a grappler and also trained Muay thai. You can hook my ear, you think im not gonna bite yours off. Thumbs in eye. Also a gi is the same as a jacket, shirt even a t-shirt. It teaches you to manipulate clothing as a tool. Im not gonna straight punch you a hammer fist is more effective. Also please if your gonna deal with grappler please invite a competition medalling black belt adult to be part of the demonstration, even an european medallist purple or brown belt adult. It makes it more genuine and they can have real dialog on what works and what doesn't.

The philosophy of Bruce Lee in grappling is "to escape immediately in grapple." A grappler cannot grapple if he has been already knocked by a jab in throat and snap kick in the groin at the same time. And a judo expert cannot takedown unless he'd grabs your shoulder, hand or clothes first. Never be hit or touched is the first of principle of defense against all kinds of fighting ranges.

Not everything has to have MMA mentality dude. Does boxing and Muay Thai or taekwondo grapple? No it doesn't. JKD is more like shoot boxing if anything. You can add to JKD with a ground fighting art. But as it is, JKD means to avoid grappling on the ground at all costs.

I remember correctly movie he does arm triangle choke on kareem?! No doubt an avid grappler if around today He was MMA mentality 100% Unfortunately he didn't get to stay around and learn some of the brilliant chokes ,sweeps, transitioning BJJ has brought into the game. There was some out in his days. With shootfighting, catch wrestling...so on. His video basically a front choke (its around). Example of learning from Bruce today is great but we have taken his open mind concept and surpassed him in technique. I mean maybe not in weapons or life ending techniques. I agree if you are fan take time to learn Bruce's grappling. But I can guarantee Bruce would tell you not to learn your grappling from him (if HIS knowledge was just this much today he would be white belt. We WOULD ASSUME he would be much more proficient alive though) all the added technique. Am example is his arm triangle on kareem if you take time to study...definitely not the best technique on an "Arm Triangle" my point? Just fact is Bruce was amazing and way ahead of game but I would not study Bruce 100% on anything necessarily. We have taken many his ideas and grew them. HE IS SO GREAT because he is telling us not to just study him if you think about it. The mixing of arts he wanted and it's came so far now. He just touched base He gets credit for that in my opinion. People give UFC props for growing martial arts as far as combining arts. It was done way before then. Just USA opened eyes with that. Bruce was ahead of time and true mma pioneer, but he is a novice on the techniques he would need to know today. So advance putting them together and his vision! Think about him teaching grappling and other styles in a time where it was frowned upon. Also to teach westerners. He broke barriers big time There is nothing wrong with learning just Karate or just wrestling or so on. But there is no doubt MMA has become such an art now that there is a common core of techniques that work and they are not challenged often. But there is also room for much more growth. And we see certain moves from an art show its face in fights all the time. Look at Leg submissions BJJ. Used to be a no no. Now it's the game and 50% of body open to attack is proving an area of change in the art that many of great COMPETITORS are being beat with.these days Two ways we should be. ...in my opinion We should embrace our art only but be open to all. Taking on one art is a whole other challenge. Understand MMA is has already earned its place in the arts. But be focused on keeping the history and respect of your art there. Or learn MMA and continue to grow it. Recognizing the challenge to stay in one art and the important to respect that. Tradition, history and competition But this Dojo hate of MMA and this MMA hate of Dojo is stupid. Saying one art is stupid to learn when you can learn all is silly as well. We take on things all the time and concentrate on one part of it all the time. Skiing and everything has specialty areas. Plus the rich tradition and history. Relationship with that art is important. That being said a legit mma can't be attacked anymore for sloppy teachings. After 30 more years of fighting USA and it's been done way before UFC. 30 years of hundred organizations today just in US (most decent and keeping competitive with high talent). Weekly shows across US. So hundreds of thousands of fights in MMA. True MMA coaches with experience. The days that MMA is bias or sloppy. It's earned its place and Bruce would want that I went on ramble. Yes I realize this video was not saying different. I just seen a couple Dojo comments and mma comments I didn't proof read much. .late night text I will reread tomorrow Background As kid Karate, Kung Fu,and Wrestling 1989 started martial arts 1997 shootfighting and MMA training Basically 4 years shootfighting 20 years BJJ Nova Unaio and Maeda submission wrestling 21 years Muay Thai 12 years Boxing 36 wrestling 8 years Judo 3 years Sambo 24 years mma or something like that Own MMA and conditioning gym Trained UFC, Belletor, LFA,PFL and other students. Who's who list of training with. From Rampage to Marcelo Garcia. Fought, coached, reffed, commentator, promote and manage (some) of my fighters in past. Not bragging. I just been around a long time in this scene. So you meet everyone especially pre-2006 or so when MMA was still smaller. And everybody trained together back then or ran into each other.

Great information for the most part but I would not fallow the last bit of information given. I have trained in many arts including Bjj for the last 4 years. If you are mounted never give your Opponent space. Glue yourself to their body, this will protect yourself and with patience give you the opportunity to escape. But like what was stated it is better to not go to the ground and manage the distance with strikes & foot work.

Turbochicken ! Its actually quite easy to counter multiple attackers.. the tehnique is called paper spray, if you youre not in situation to apply that tehnique, the second one is called RUN TF OUTTA THERE. You cant fight multiple guys so dont even try to, sure it could work, but 9/10 times it doesnt. Even top experienced fighters could get swinged to a back of a head by a dude that never fought in his life and end up dead. Just spray the bastards and run away.

It's not as hard as you think honestly. Me and my friends used to get jumped by little gangs of wannabe cholos in high school all the time. Usually like 12-2 or 3 odds and we beat the shit out of them. I'm 27 now and been doing Muay Thai since I was about 6. My buddies were wrestlers/boxers/Meatheads. If we can do it, a highly proficient martial artist can. Hell, krav maga people pretty much have that as a graded event lol.

Bruce Lee actually used a few Jiu Jitsu moves in his movies. Maybe one of the reasons why he used only a few is because it's not perceived as exciting and viewers wants to see more striking in movies.

Any serious martial artist should aim to have at least a years worth of BJJ, Judo, Sambo, Wrestling or some type of grappling in their game. If you don't have the mat time and experience, you simply wont be able to defend the take down, or get defend getting mounted or know how to move on the ground. All your years and training poured into stand up dont count for anything. Have seen many times where someone trained in grappling for a short period of time beat martial artists who avoid grappling but have been training their whole lives.

Grappling is one of the 16 Facts of JKD stated by Bruce Lee himself! Also to think your going to fight a guy who trains grappling for 10 yes is ridiculous. Low chance your going to face Gordon Ryan on the street

This guy sounds like a philosophy professor not someone who has experience using this. There are three ranges to grappling. 1. Where you can kick like this, 2. Where he has made contact and has a hold of you 3. Where he has positional dominance. A good or even average grappler will blow by stage 1 no problem. Then you are fucked if you don't understand position and escape. Grab ears all you want and jab the neck. If you don't understand positioning the guy will choke you or snap a limb.

I’m a big fan of this channel but if you are fighting a top level BJJ/MMA/Judo or Wrestling grappler fighter . Those moves will not be effective. Especially when strikes are involved. Those gus/girls will take you down and fight from there. It’s best to learn actually realistic and alive styles of Grappling instead of these show moves. Like Dan Inosanto, Burton Richardson, Matt Thornton and Chuck Norris did.

Yeah hit the groin, poke the eyes . . . BJJ guys are not ready for that while they expect you to fight by BJJ rules.

Those are some nice ideas. Many people fear being on the ground, however it can actually give more support. Another idea I had in case of being mounted: use the cover [as in your 'basic cover' video]. The idea being to break opponent's fist/s: as a result of landing on the elbow(s).
