Good points. I used to be an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. Tip #1 is especially important. I found that students who were afraid to make mistakes when speaking English ... students who only wanted to speak in phrases and sentences they already knew were 100% correct ... improved their English SLOWER than students who were not afraid of making mistakes. Hey, even native English speakers like myself make mistakes when we speak English sometimes!! :) So go ahead and talk, talk, and talk. That's how your English will improve when you do that in addition to studying. Good points by Mr. Lok.

My first language is English. I speak some Cantonese from having spent 7 years living in HK, also a little Taiwanese from having lived there for a year, and of course some Mandarin. I also speak French, fluently enough to have worked for Air France, some German from having lived there 6 months and fairly good Thai, after having lived there 17 years. Now I am learning 日本語 (Japanese) So I know a bit about languages. Dan hits the nail on the head. (1) The difference between speaking English just "very well", (as Dan here does), and speaking it fluently, is the difference between night and day (2). Why? Because English has so many idioms. It probably has as many idioms as Chinese has characters! (which might be an interesting linguistic parallel) One's choice of which idioms to use, when and when NOT to use certain ones, enables one to navigate smoothly past the "slings and arrows" (3) of English society. If I spoke in a normal idiomatically entertaining way, a perfectly fluent English language speaker in USA might not cotton on (4) to 1/2 of what I was rabbiting on about and would probably misunderstand my humour. ;) The English language also has the biggest vocabulary of any language as it comprises Latin, Greek and Germanic root words. The word "television", for example, comprises the Greek root "tele" (meaning - from afar) and Latin root Vision, meaning to see. Here's the thing though. You don't need to have a huge vocabulary to SOUND fluent! You just need a reasonable collection of funny idioms. A couple of dozen or so to spice up your conversation. And they can be easily and deliberately acquired. I helpfully numbered a few idioms there, to help you all kill two language learning birds with one stone (5) and take my ideas on board (6)!

Just my little suggestion. Reading paragraphs out load is a good way to exercise our mouth's muscles for the English pronunciation, but if you want to find out whether or not you are making improvements, you can record yourself while reading, then listen to it. Compare your recordings of the same paragraps at different times, then you know how much you have improved. And it's a good way to tell if you're pronouncing the words correctly. I hope this helps - Roger

,,being surrounded by english speakers,, is actually the best option, that can help you to achieve fluency. I remember being desperate, because of this. I thought that i could just imagine how it's like to be fluent, i thought that i will never feel that smoothness of speaking english. I was furious, especially when i watched the movie. It had a lot of words that were unfamiliar to me, that i've never heard about them before. After that i just lost a desire for watching it anymore. One period had passed, and then after it, i came across on some tv show, and yeah of course it was in English. And after that, i've become eager to start learning English again, started to read comic books, watching TV shows, and etc..... I knew that i would be hard to go through it all again, but this time i'm not gonna give up. And here i am today, fully interested in language, waiting to learn something new everyday. JUST BE PATIENT AND PERSISTENT, i'm telling you this from my personal experience It will be a little tough, but it'll pay off, believe me.....

It’s not about knowing how to speak a specific language…. it’s being able to influence and inspire other people…. As long as your heart is to serve and you have a strong mind to show to people… then you can be like Mr. Dan... J.T.
