Exactly what i was thinking, like those vintage camcorders when i was young. When i took videos with my Sony camcorder, i never thought about quality but rather capturing the moment that i could replay anytime i wanted to. The footage of it today are gold to me, even though it's horrible image quality.

I think one of the main takeaways from this that I am getting is how incredibly powerful an idea is. A lot of people will have access to a smart phone with significantly better quality than the cheaper camera Dan has shown us here - think about what you can do with what you have rather than wishing you had the latest gear. Invest the time and money in learning and mastering the craft - the gear will come later. Thanks Dan, a great episode this week!

I would have loved to see a comparison with the "Camera" video also having the sound effects, music, and voiceover. This way it was much less "wow" also because of those missing things which had obviously nothing todo with the camera. But ofcourse… replace the "Camear Camera" with a 300$ camera and you'd be in a whole different situation.

I think what's most important about film is character. Not the characters that are in the film but the picture itself that has character. Why are we enjoying those low-quality 80's homemade clips? Because they have character. Why are we enjoying those high-end trailer-worthy cinematic clips? Because they have character. You just have to figure out the type of character that fits your idea! I would say that story is the most important. A prime example is that guy who became famous over night for skateboarding on tiktok. You don’t need fancy gear to tell compelling stories. I use my phone to film and practice telling stories!

The "Normal" Camera: It was a car ad from a company trying to appear down-to-earth The Dollar-store Camera: It was an indie-pop music video from a band with eight-thousand KZbin subscribers. Honestly, as someone who's done a lot of geurilla filmmaking, I still see potential. Get some tent-poles, drill a hole in a desk chair, duct-tape the poles and the chair, mount it, add a balance bar and bingo! You're ready to go put your ideas to film.

What I feel that people are gonna lose fighting over "quality" in comments is that KZbin videos (as close as 2012) back when KZbin was fresh looked exactly like that cheap camera. Gear serves the idea, but can also inspire new ideas. When tech is used for the sake of using tech, it rarely produces greatness. It's like a demo. Demo shows the potential, but it isn't the realization of that potential. An idea without the gear to make it reality, can communicate the concept but it doesn't have the same emotional impact. There's a balance struck between using a tool because it's the right tool to create the concept, and using it just to say you used it. In the end, by forcing one side over the other the sum will be less than the parts.

Such a good video bru and love your thought process. I’ve worked on sets where we’re shooting with arri cameras and £30,000 plus lenses, to small videos on my Panasonic gh5. It’s always been about the idea and it’s hardest thing to come up with, but also don’t get to set on the idea if you’re trying to make small films. You got an idea just shoot it!
