Great story telling 👌 Until 1834 the Dannebrog was the kings flag only and the ordinary Danes were not allowed to use it. After 2. Slesvigske krig (war) 1864 against Austria and Preusia regarding Slesvig-Holsten where Denmark lost 1/3 of its landmass, 40% of the population and its 2. largest city (Flensborg), the Danes became very nationalistic. It's from that period that Danes decorated Christmas trees with garlands of Dannebrog and also trompets and drumms (not seen so often anymore) and also using Dannebrog much more frequently in other situations than most other countries. When I visited Tallinn a couple of years ago I went to see a small church. The monk in the entrence said: Oh you're from Denmark... your queen was just here. Take two steps forward and look up". I was were puzzeled.. was queen Margrethe in the church? I took two steps and looked up.. No queen. The monk said "your flag your flag" and yes Dannebrog was hanging from a pole high on the wall. It turned out that queen Margrethe had been to the church one month earlier to celebrate the 800 year of Dannebrog falling from the skyes, and they build the church on the spot.(says the myth)

Very cool format, being able to visit the different places tied to one well told story, must have taken a lot of planning and editing. Those will of course take longer, and be more expensive, to produce, so I like how you're doing multiple topics in parallel. Also, it's so good to see the restrictions getting lifted, little by little.. Now you can finally be Travelin' again :) I like the format as I said, but I also like the more generic ones where you basically just put a perspective on the Denmark that I think I know so well, often there are details I've gotten so used to that I don't really notice them. Of course I've been taught the story of Dannebrog in ground school, but I've never been to Tallinn. In the same spirit you could also do pieces about the wars between Denmark and Sweden and England, perhaps even cover the dispute we have with Canada (Hans Ø), tho I know that one would probably be quite expensive, but if so, you could also cover how the relations between Denmark and Greenland are, and why we can't just sell it. (Perhaps find some cooperation with Royal Greenland and Aalborg Akvavit? 😁 but you'd probably also need some help from either locals up there or the Danish defense, if you want to get close to the island). Great video, thanks!

@@TravelinYoung oh if, you want more ideas about Danish connections, look into our colonial times: you could start with a nice work vacation in Dansk Vestindien, then go visit the small settlements we had in Africa, India (Dansk Ostindien), and perhaps visit "the Danish island" in Guangzhou, China. There are plenty of places to visit with a Danish connection. Anyway, make it your own format, I really liked this episode.

It's interesting to see the director of the Danish Cultural Institute keeping the myth alive... When I worked at the Danish Cultural Institute in Tallinn (now merged with the institutes of Lithuania and Latvia). Well... When I was doing guided tours I was asked not to tell the origins of the myth in Tallinn, Estonia. In the early 1500s the Danish fransiscan munk Peder Olsen (Petrus Olai) was collecting tales of the Danish flag, and mentions the two original sources (since lost) which both ties the myth of the flag falling not to the battle of Lyndanisse (Tallinn) in 1219, but rather to the southern Estonian town of Viljandii in 1208... but first of all that was a minor battle of less importance and that part of Estonia later became part of the German part of Estonia... so Olsen decided to move the event to a more important battle and a place that became the center of the Danish presence in Estonia... and thus we have the myth now set in 1219 in Tallinn... wrong year... wrong city... Also note that big "wave-like" monument above the monument to the flag... it was originally planned to stand in front of the old monument, and have the flags of all the Nordic countries in color... when the plans were made public, I was asked to write a strongly worded complaint about this, as it would (according to the Danish cultural institute at the time), be equivalent to placing a Canadian flag permanently on the Statue of Liberty. In the end the flags of the other nations were left without color and the monument was moved to the platform above the old monument to Danish flag. Oh... and it will be interesting to see you in Narva... Not far from there is a very odd historical monument in Danish history... in the small town of Sinimae stands the only (I believe) monument celebrating the Danes who joined the Waffen SS and fought on the German side in WW2.
@denmark393 жыл бұрын
And the real story: it was just a white sheet coloured with blood ( I’m sure ) … still the flag came from unity. Who is behind the nazy monument? Government level or?
@christinaj.jensen48053 жыл бұрын
@@denmark39 there’s also the fact that the flags with crosses were very common at this point in time. Valdemar Sejr was fighting for the Crusades and he very likely looked into the sun for too long and then looked at a uniform with a cross and thought that was what he saw. Either way, no matter what the true story is, which we are likely never going to find out unless someone invents a time machine and see what Valdemar saw and not just what Saxo and Absalon told, the meaning behind the story of the Danish flag remains the same. Because of the “sign from God” the Danes mustered enough strength to win the battle. And the flag became a symbol of Denmark’s strength. No matter the origin, the message Can not be taken away from it.
@Hansen7103 жыл бұрын
A better gues, if we dont get the timemachine. Is that the flag is given at the same time as the other scandinavian flags, when we stopped bieng vikings. And this flag celibrates the loss of our old religion and culture
@christinaj.jensen48053 жыл бұрын
@@Hansen710 Well, we know that wasn’t true. The Swedish flag didn’t become like it is now until after the dissolving of the Kalmar Union in 1523, based on the Kalmar Union’s red and yellow flag. And the Norwegian flag was inspired by both the Danish and Swedish flags in 1905. For Iceland and Finland it seemed to withstand the close connections with the Scandinavians, as Iceland had been part of Norway and Denmark, and Finland had been part of Sweden. The Kalmar Union’s flag came to be by Margrethe the I. Again, based on the Danish flag that had existed for over a century by this time.

As a common guest to Malta, down south, they have and also fly the Crusaders flag, which is very similar to the Danish, but with equal size red rectangles. And we know of German Crusaders fighting close to Valdemar, so it may have been one of their flags he brought home. By that time the flag looked very different from the present version, and this isn't as legendary and fun as the story. On Malta they say it was a worn flag that Valdemar got his hand on! 😄

When you watch these videos it seem so simple, but the planing and writing of what to say, what to film etc, is going to take time also the research, not bad at all. So the Danes didn't invade your parents backyard or is it an old Viking Outpost? The thing I took notice of, was the fact that you seen more Danish flags since you got here than you see the Stars and Stripes in the US, I think Hollywood spoiled us, thinking that every house/home in the US would fly a flag on the porch.
@TravelinYoung3 жыл бұрын
Haha, Vikings didn’t make it here :). I found it interesting as well. No one in the us has a real flag pole in their yard. They often have a small thing to put a flag near their front door, but those are mostly used during holidays. Going past summer houses or allotment gardens in DK I was surprised and impressed how many flags I see. I think is kinda cool.

@nielschristiansen80433 жыл бұрын
You are totally right. The flag did not fall down from the sky but from a horse. Among the soldiers were crusaders wearing a red cloth with a white cross. Many crusaders in the Middle Ages wore a white robe with a red cross but the reverse was also the case. So there are probably several red robes with white crosses that have fallen down from a horse in this battle. So in that way you can say that Dannebrog fell from the sky - but probably no more than two max two meters

The theory goes that some soldiers ran out of the right size of stones, and bundled up a few in a flag. And thereby created the small wonder during the fighting. The bundled up stones must have opened and the flag fell down.
@larsdahl55283 жыл бұрын
As far as I understand, then it was a monk's cape that was used to bundle up the stones. however, that happens somewhere else in 1208. First later (1256 ?) it got (creative storytelling) connected to the events in 1219 (Something about Denmark took over a siege from the Prussians, and with the Prussians gone... Well, there was no longer any reason to resist.). The original monk's cape got stored as a catholic holy relic until the war in 1839 (Three years war?) where Austria-Prussia invaded and burnt it.

During the night of June 15, 1219, the Estonians made a surprise attack on the Danish camp. As he raised his arms toward heaven to pray for help, the Danish archbishop discovered that as long as he could hold his arms up, the Danes were able to push back the enemy. But when they dropped from weariness, the Estonians gained ground. Eventually a red banner with a white cross floated down from the sky and, as the archbishop caught it, he heard a voice from the clouds say that the Danes would win if they raised this banner before their enemies. A messenger took the banner to King Valdemar, and the Danes won the battle. Schools, sports organizations, and Boy Scout troops in Denmark often hold pageants on June 15, also known as Flag Day, in which they reenact the story of the Dannebrog (the Danish flag) and King Valdemar. The red and white flag can be seen flying everywhere on this day in honor of its miraculous first appearance.

Remember Denmark is a monarchy The first flag is the Queen's Flag, Dannebrog burgee. So the normal Dannebrog, and then pennant.

Yeah, it is super disappointing when I work really hard on something only to notice an error like this after it is up on KZbin. It happens though and I say 1219 correctly enough times I think most people get it.

@@TravelinYoung Yea I understand, was just messing with ya. I'm certain some people don't even know the actual year to begin with which is even more upsetting!

Talinn actually translates to the city/castle of the danes.

That is just one theory that the name Tallinn comes from Taani Linnus (Danish castle), others say it comes from Tali linn (winter town).

I think us Danes as well as you Americans might be some of most flag-loving people in the world. PS: I didn't know you were buying youtube ads!

Ha yeah, I just started to experiment a bit. I find it’s easy to get forgotten and missed on YT, so I’m buying some ads for videos that got lost in the shuffle to bring us back into the feed.

@@TravelinYoung I feel like you guys have very good potential for growth. First of all, we love when foreigners talk about-and praise-our country, and I think a lot of Americans will also want to learn more about the mythical socialist utopia that is Denmark. On top of that, all of your videos are very high quality. I definitely won't be forgetting this channel any time soon

@@Elkjær_Nersting that is super nice of you to say! YT and it’s algorithm is fickle. I myself get lost in a rabbit hole of content not related to my primary interests and my favorite channels disappear from my feed. So I figure I’ll help nudge a bit with occasion ads for the folms that also happens to. I have an anonymous account I use to really see how my viewing and search behavior influences what is presented to me. Currently it’s all short baseball clips, camera reviews, and vr fails. I have to search for creators I really like to get them back in my feed.

I've heard in history class that the Danish flag was made when someone put a Christian cross in a white sheet of cloth and someone spilled blood over it.

I like the video is that you could have touched a bit more on how we use the flag very differently. In US it is a sign of national pride. In Denmark we use it more to marcate that either you or the nation has had a good turn. Like in Denmark it is your birthday. Then let us decorate your desk with flags. Denmark won against all odds in football in 1992? Great let us raise our flag in celebration because our tiny nation did what no one (including ourselves) thought possible. So in Denmark the use of flag is much more tied into possitive events than a symbol of national pride.
@TravelinYoung3 жыл бұрын
Ha, your description of raising the flag in 92 was to celebrate the tiny nation winning. That includes National pride :). I think in Denmark it is a little of both and not used almost exclusively for national pride.
@MsMissX3 жыл бұрын
@@TravelinYoung I assume you mean Hi not Ha since the later indicate a rather arrogant tone towards me in the rest of the conversation. Yes some national pride but far more a focus of the pride coming with happy events and flats out in the daily life. When we had the Muhamed pictures many put the flag away because they felt. Oh now it is not populair anymore. So better to hide it and that is my main point. National pride is far more comon in Americans than in Danes. We more feel it on special occations because well blast we did something nice and good. Who has heard about Denmark outside Denmark? No nead to stand shouting your a dane from the rooftop. Most people belive it is the capitol of Ikea anyway.

Yes, really good job there Josh. But while you're at it about old Scandinavian history. Why don´t you make a video about the Kalmar union? And how king Christian II (or Christian the tyrant, depending on which country you are living in) became the king of Sweden after Stockholm's bloodbath. And all the reasons why and consequences around that. And if you plan any in comparison with danish snaps. Try Swedish snaps, try Nyköping brännvin, Gammal Norrlands, Gammel opland aquavit, Stockholms bränneri akvavit or, Herrgårds aquavit. In one of your try it on Tuesday

To become a citizen you are required to declare allegiance to Denmark. A flag may not be involved, but that is just a mere symbol anyway.
