That eye for an eye verse really showcases how little his voice has aged. He still sounds the same in his 60's as he did in 1981. Truly impressive. Finally, an 80's musician that didn't completely throw his life off the rails for 30 years.
@nuclearcatbaby11313 жыл бұрын
I think he sang different in 1981, had this deepness and this odd cartoon character to it that changed in the mid-80s but I think it’s more of a choice than an actual change. He’s a man of many voices and at the eye for an eye part he sounds a little like Stimpy from Ren & Stimpy.

This song actually reminds me more of, 'Rich People Problems' by Al Jourgensen's side project Surgical Meth Machine. Al Jourgensen and Jello Biafra have this same cynical sarcastic sense of gallow's humor and articulate it in similar ways. Maybe Danny can be a honorary member of LARD. Mike Patton on the other hand just says gibberish by his own admissions. Mike's vocal chords are phenomenal though, but he's not generally saying anything. Les Claypool would probably vibe well with Danny musically. That'd be interesting.

I don't think this IS a happy song. It's the very antithesis of all those catchy "happy" tunes, songs to make us forget how bad we're being screwed, sarcasm like Kurt Cobain's line "I'm so happy, cuz today I found my friends, they're in my head." he was not a happy camper. Depression is not just a bad mood that one can just shake off, no trendy happy song is going to cheer us up. Nor is (pick your poison) alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine, meth, heroine, Prozac, etc. Society expects us to be happy no matter what, all the f-ing time, or something is wrong with you. I do like Elfman, and this video, it's totally refreshing to hear someone tell the truth. I for one am not going to pretend I'm happy, I'm sick of this Covid crap and all the other depressing shit in the world, but I'm not going to give up either, that's what the world wants , for people like me to just get over it or go away . I'm staying right here and you're all just going to have to deal with me. During 2020 the suicide rate jumped up to about 300%!! it's suicide prevention/awareness month, if you know someone who has been affected by suicide, don't try to cheer them up, don't dish out drivel about how God only gives us as much as we can handle, or it's gonna be ok. No, have respect for the person who is feeling unhappy, and respect their feelings. If things are shitty, it's ok to feel like crap. Just don't wallow in that mess for too long. I get what you are saying , musically, it's very un happy, but it address the everpresent sick need in this country to always put a smile on your face.

I just found out about the new album a few days ago and I am utterly in awe of it. Elfman is one of my favourite musicians and that's largely because he just doesn't really let himself care about how we perceive his art. He hopes we'll like it I'm sure, but that's not the point of creating it. He creates what he has to in the moment as an artist, for himself, and then he puts that out into the world. He isn't afraid of our perceptions, or he doesn't allow himself to be. He isn't afraid to push the envelope and mold it into what he wants it to be. I will admit the first time I listened to Big Mess I went in hoping for the sort of music he did back in the 80's (sort of an Oingo Boingo sound but predominantly his solo album from back then, that is a gem of an album) and I was initially disappointed to find that it had a heavier, darker sound. But once I had set aside those expectations and really listened to it on it's own I was struck by it's beauty and how true it all felt (and it has some of the most striking lyrical work I've ever seen.) This song in particular really stuck out to me. The idea of falling apart and losing your marbles but you say it's fine and that you're happy is something I connect with heavily, and I think this song captures how that can feel, especially at your lowest point. Truly some beautiful work.
@freud51373 жыл бұрын
I had the same journey with his new album. I found it difficult and a bit dark and unpleasant, initially. But I think it's a strong album. You have to be willing to drop the happy ska tone of his Oingo Boingo days.

This man scored some of my favorite movies growing up. Spiderman, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory etc. And now I hear him swearing up a storm. And it's glorious.

@Captain Brandon Punk & Horror Lover I think the fast part actually sounds more like the new direction he was headed in right after Boingo, songs from Farewell like Burn Me Up and Piggies. I always wanted to see where that was leading, maybe now we will get a chance to find out! The slower part to this is way more like his orchestral work mixed with some sort of uncharted territory we haven't really heard yet. It's both familiar and yet kind of without a definite precedent. Anyway, I love it.

Dear Danny Elfman, please collaborate with Devin Townsend. It would be insanity the world doesn't know it needs yet. That is my only request aside from; Keep killing it, Sir.
