I do remap quite a few BMW E46's and a lot of people 'play' with the stock intake thinking they will do a better job than BMW themselves..99% of the time they lose power and just get heat soak the engine, I am tired of telling everyone stock airbox is best 99% of the time unless you spend a few grand on eventuri or similar intake system where it has been specifically made for the car. Usually stock airbox + pipercross or a less restrictive filter is the best, if you can make some intake hoses to bring extra cold air in the engine would be best.

I had the same sort of misfire on mine, its due to not running the plastic cover over the coils - water was pooling in the valley where the coils are and then down one of the plugs, worked fine when it was on the flat by accelerating or going up a hill the water would basically stop the coil from actually firing the plug.

Hey Danny.🖐 Was outta town and driving most of yesterday, but finally got settled in for a watch and a comment. I like the fact that you're willing to listen to, but don't necessarily believe everything the internet says. There's only one way to know for sure. Kudos for taking time to test and see the results for yourself.👊 I've never liked a MAF setup, kinda scared of them because they can be so damned finicky. A few mm makes a world of difference. Looks like you've got the best setup for now, but I know the spirited man you are, you won't stop until you have that competitive advantage.👊 Picking up more power is always welcome and as EE has shown us, inscreased area under the curve is more important than just a peak hp number. You've invested a fair amount of R&D on the MR2 and I'm wishing you many happy returns tomorrow at Donington Park. Give 'em hell. Have a good evening, Dan.✌

Not sure if it's allowed in your class, but a popular intake mod here in the US is not only spacing the MAF out about 4mm, but also removing the little air vanes inside the airbox and swapping in 2ZZ injectors. I ran the setup in mine for a few years and it improved mid range by quite a bit.

Thanks for that Dan. Have seen many different "cold air" intakes and they all seem problematic. I have had a close look at my standard set up and the only criticism I have is the 90 degree turn it makes in the guard pointing it to the side of the battery instead of directly towards the side scoop. I can only guess Toyota did this to avoid water, dust and debris from going directly into the air intake. Your dyno testing confirms that the standard air box is about as good as it gets. For that reason I will not mess with mine. Cheers from Down Under.

@94tegLSatMSC3 жыл бұрын
Good work. I've often read the stock intake setup is pretty good but this confirms it. I just recently put on a Monkey Wrench intake on my MR2 and it seems to have helped a bit. They use an intake tube that has the same diameter as the stock intake to keep the MAF happy but also a nice K&N filter and it puts it behind the battery to hopefully catch clean cold air. Could be something to add to your list the next time you head to the dyno.

You can crush the fuel pressure regulator to increase fuel rail pressure, but without leaning your map and putting bigger injectors in you will just overfuel and exceed duty cycle for the oem green injectors, plus all this isnt allowed in mr2 chapionship regs
@777MAV3 жыл бұрын
@@HrV147 how exactly this can make you run out of injectors? Usually ecu just runs open loop modes straight from fuel map. I believe oem lambda sensors are narrowband, but it's worth cjecking... If ecu applies LTFT or any other trim to open loop it doesn't make any sense - if you put bigger injectors or raise fuel pressure ecu will still adopt to it to some extent.
@pjay30283 жыл бұрын
The fuel pressure increase (or yellow injectors) works with a MAF riser. There's loads of stuff about it, a guy called Cap discovered it. there's your way to tune your ecu, just play with the maf housing size to correct the afr's. Might be worth to try to figure out how to make a ram air intake from that side intake, the extra airflow at speed should give you some ponies
@dannyDC23 жыл бұрын
Yes perfect. That's the way to go. Maximise what the stock can do..
@fedezyl3 жыл бұрын
@@dannyDC2 How were the afr's with the stock intake? You could always tune your ecu to maximize the HP's with AFR tuning, once you know what AFR is good you can resize the MAF housing to suit. Usually OEM tunes run rich for emissions, bear in mind that the MAF not reading the true air mass will affect the whole map. Also check the long term and short term fuel trims, as the ECU will try to correct from deviations of the actual AFR vs the map AFR. You can override that for a bit by disconnecting the battery thus resetting the ECU, but you might have to do that before all sessions. Love the racing content, keep it going.

If u can run mafless with standalone ecu.. using alph-N or VE tune... Then, any airbox will have less variation in power... But regarding stock maf, Stock engine with minimal internal mods, Stock modified airbox were the best... Not only on Mr2S... But this concept is true to almost all other car that were using maf sensor.... Alternatively, u can try modify the airbox to have bigger filtered air reserve capacity... This mod u will see gain when transitioning from off throttle to wot moment..

And putting bigger tapered velocity stack funnel infront of the maf sensor inside the airbox Also probably the best method to see if getting any gains on said mod is by doing accel-decel pull at mid rpm on the dyno where usually transition from braking to accelerating in the rev range... Anyway this is just a mere suggestion... But atleast we knew that we tried to gain maximum efficiency from whatever current engine spec allowed... And i do agree by thinkering with stock airbox, there is plenty of gain still left on the table for us to grab for on track advantage...
