There is a lot of talk over the past year about getting cards graded to protect value. However, as millions of cards continue to come back encapsulated, is it helping the market for graded cards? Or hurting it?

Yessir, it would be foolish to send your cards in now. I’d rather have them sitting on my desk in a nice case on display rather than sitting in some warehouse for a year until some random guy grades my cards.

Yeah, I could understand spending $200+/card if the maximum declared value would be over a grand, but... For cards worth about $100-$500...? Yeah, it definitely makes a lot more sense to wait for the prices and times to go back down.

I’m starting to lean towards slabbing my own cards that aren’t the highest of tier.. I’ll be sending my WOTC Charizard’s from 4 sets to CGC for grading but anything worth $100-$200 I’m going to try creating a nice label with no grade, just the card info, and then putting it into a DIY slab. It’s not anything like Ultra-Pro magnetic or screw down cases, you can get actual slabs that you can put your card in permanently yourself. I think it will be well worth the savings to put a little time into perfecting the process so that some of my favorite cards are slabbed for less than $2 with no grade. I don’t really give a shit about the grade anyways, I filter out graded cards that are 9.0, 9.5, 10, and PSA graded when I’m looking for a pre-slabbed card. I’d much rather have an 8.0 or 8.0 CGC for 50%+ off the price.

Howdy Danny. Awesome video. You mentioned how cards submitted in October are still only 11% done. This is something that a lot of people don't realize is that it's not the date that the cards arrived or were submitted but that the date that they were entered into the PSA system. I submitted some cards in October but they didn't get entered into the PSA grading system until the end of january. That means the cards that are in October were likely submitted in June July or August. So that means people have been waiting much longer than 10 months.

Great video, totally on the mark with your ideas. I do think the junk slabs will slow down as sellers realize they're losing money when grading essentially worthless cards. I do think there will still be lots of graded regular V cards or holo charizards but I think the number of commons and uncommons being submitted for grading will decline. Personally, I'm looking at the next year or two as a good time to invest in slabs I've always wanted for my personal collection but have been to expensive (like the zard vmax or rainbow chonkachu). Prices for cards like that are still dropping, and will probably drop even further with possible reprints and new grades coming back. But that means that they're more affordable if you're just looking to own one.

I mean, they are junk slabs to sellers because they are losing money when they sell them. However, I’m scooping up those “junk” slabs for less than the cost to grade them and very close to the card’s raw price. If a vintage non-holo is worth $10 and you can pick it up in a CGC 8.0-9.0 for $15, I think it’s usually worth it, if for nothing more than to have a large slabbed collection. IMO, the card is worth $15+ graded in a 8.0+ if it’s a $10 raw card. However, this isn’t exactly scalable. $5 is a low cost to have a card graded but I dunno about buying a $500 raw card for $750 graded 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's worth it from an investment standpoint because there's a huge market for graded cards and there's a speculated premium on graded cards vs raw. A lot of time, patience, and money to send off cards is required for grading cards which can be troubling. It's for sure a gamble but could pay off depending on the cards you grade and if you get them back in a high grade. That's a big if! Personally I have very little interest in grading cards, but can see why collectors and investors do it. PSA has the trust, but they also aren't grading accurately when 10s come back off-center or can look worse than a 9. "We need to grade anything and everything" isn't good strategically and profit wise. You're not gonna grade a modern energy card unless it's the gold energy cards or a vintage 1st edition energy card in obvious, pristine condition. Grading a common vintage card may be worth it, but a common modern card isn't smart. A lot to process before deciding to grade or not.
@myrealnameisjohndoe116
@myrealnameisjohndoe116 2 жыл бұрын
And on top of that, having common modern cards graded clogs up the system, meaning that by having every single booster pack graded... That laziness not only is a waste of money for the person having junk cards graded, but that also ends up costing others time and money as well.
@foresthill538
@foresthill538 2 жыл бұрын
@@myrealnameisjohndoe116 That's something that has happened a lot. Everyone is sending in cards that are worth like $3 raw and thousands of cards like that. Honestly think if you get cards graded, it makes more sense to grade the rarest and more valuable cards in existence. Everyone is grading a $3 full art trainer or a reverse common that is $0.50 a piece raw. There's a graded card market and there's a raw card market. In some ways, the graded card market can influence the value of the raw. As a solely raw collector who hasn't graded cards, it can affect the demand for sealed product too. Price of cards begins to climb on everything from raw cards to sealed product. What exactly is a legit reason to mark up a card? Grading packs is odd to me man. A raw, sealed pack kept in good condition is $200 but you get it graded by PSA and it suddenly becomes $1,500 because PSA graded it a 10? Like what? Whether it's graded or not, you don't know what's inside the pack. It's the same pack graded or raw.

@@foresthill538 Yeah, selling and grading packs seems incredibly bizarre to me as well😅 And spending $20+ to grade individual cards that are worth 50¢ or $3 raw? I might be able to understand someone having a rare card they really like graded if they want to showcase it like that, but spending that much on common cards that are common and aren't even worth $10 raw seems like a huge waste of time and money(both for the person sending in decks or those common cards, and for the people with cards to be graded after that person) to me😅

@@myrealnameisjohndoe116 I mean you can grade any card that you want. Going into it, you should look for first of all, how confident you think the card looks. I would buy one of those magnifying lenses with a light and try to get accustomed to eyeballing the condition of a card very well before sending in the ones you think will grade high. It's a tricky process. I'm not a proponent for grading cards because I've never graded any before. Have a general idea and have looked into grading, but I'm just a casual fan and collector of th cards that loves to buy packs and just the enjoyment of it. Any big chase cards you pull, those are worth grading. Like it's not worth it to grade a very common you know, Nickit from Shining Fates vs a Charizard VMAX.remember, you're not guaranteed a PSA 10 no matter how confident you are using your own two eyes. Tha's why I don't even bother although I do have some cards that are worthy of being graded. It's really an investment type of action vs a collector's type.

I hear the argument about why are people grading common near mint $.25 cards and that logic doesn’t make sense to me. I’d first say that Near-Mint does not equal Gem Mint. You even mentioned on the video that 90% of packed pulled cards are mint (psa 9). That’s why there’s a huge premium on any card outside of raw + grading cost. Secondly, I never hear flippers complain about the junk slabs. All Collectors should love low cost junk slabs because they can get the cards they want at a very low cost and don’t have to deal with the grading hassle. But older collectors are complaining because it is really about junk slabs devaluing their existing collection that they now feel they overpaid for.

The way I see it from a personal stand point collect what you like,what you know,and what you want to its your money,from a population stand point,new cards shouldn't be graded,it should be out of play cards,and the ones that survive competition play,or just misses being used for competition,those should get graded,that would cut graded population down while leaving plenty for everyone who plays to get ahold of cards they need,from a business stand point just buy anything older than sword & shield itll go up,if you can't sell/flip it now wait 3-5 years. Otherwise I think grading should be restricted to vintage/classic being 5 years old or older,and promotional cards but thats just my opinion.

All I ever get graded are the cards I want to keep in good condition for my own personal collection (usually extremely rare and hard to find cards) however I've seen others Grade some DUMB cards and then try to sell them 😆

I only believe I would grade ones that you think are more of a 9-10. Anything below or known lower than 8's or so is just causing a price spike on things for no reason. A slab at a 5 is a turd. Just because you slap some junk in a slab and say it's worth more, it's just a mind numbing thought.

PSA need to have teirs of grading not in just price. Vintage should be it own thing. Sub vintage should be another. Modern should be graded by a computer and be push out the fastest. Use humans on WOTC., EX f to black and white.

Pokemon needs to make chase cards in set like sports card company’s do like # different art works or color of the same cards. Make certain cards limited that way people aint grading everything and only grading rare cards that are hard to find. There is to many of the same card on the market.

Want inflated prices of cards? Then grade them. The real profiteers in this situation are the grading card companies. Buy raw cards, it’s not rocket science to ‘grade’ trading cards and it’s cheaper!
@heybaeuwb8888

The value of a card is strictly biased and is entirely based on a popular demand. And for the most part its a pedigree. you can buy a psa graded card its gonna do they same thing as a psa 10 or even a ungraded. people have always tried to find the purest of material for purely aesthetic purposes the actual value is the same. but there is all of that stuff but is it worth your $$ i mean there is no money.. pedigree you let a card define itself based on its perfections then u let imperfections define a cards worth. People want what others have and even if they have it they want the better one. The reason u grade it is because so many people are selling that same card well what defines your card more then the others as far as its worth to the buyer. thats my take. its not the greatest hahaha

the grading scene now is atrocious. its stupid as to what people are grading. the number of shit slabs in the market is crazy. just because theres more of a particular graded card in the market doesnt mean it is more expensive. it means the price of the slab will go down. so stop sending in cards that u want to flip for profit. send in stuff u want to keep long term. i dont believe for one second u want to keep every single xy evolutions holo or every single card u want to grade now. its beyond stupid
