We got word through the online community that another grain elevator was getting set to be demolished. Yes, the 1930s former U.G.G. (United Grain Growers) elevator in the town of Creston, British Columbia was in the early stages of "deconstruction".
Apparently it has some structural issues and there simply aren't enough funds available to do a restoration. It's a story we see all too often.
So, what does any insane grain elevator fan do? We took advantage of our first available day off from work and set out with DroneOCan to go visit the elevator, pay our respects, and capture it on video for future generations. After all, it's just a simple 500km drive to get to Creston from our house, a mere day trip of sorts.
While there, we took the opportunity to visit the grave of Edward Mallandaine, who is sometimes referred to as the Craigellachie Kid. Edward was just 18 years old when he wormed his way to the front of the crowd and was captured in the photo showing Donald Smith driving the last spike on the Canadian Pacific Railroad. In his adult years, Mr. Mallandaine would go on to help found the town of Creston.
As always, thanks for coming along for the ride!
