What’s the movie Dante’s Peak about?
Four years after losing his girlfriend Marianne in a volcanic eruption in Colombia, volcanologist Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan from James Bond and Mamma Mia!) is employed by the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver. One day, after signs of seismic activity were recorded on Dante's Peak, the service sent him on a "routine" monitoring mission, as the volcano was reputed to have been extinct for centuries. Dr. Dalton arrives at Dante's Peak, a small town located at the foot of the volcano. After the discovery of two young men scalded and asphyxiated while swimming in a hot spring on the slopes of the volcano, the service was forced to send a full team to conduct increased surveillance and a series of in-depth measurements. The accumulation of clues showing an imminent awakening of the volcano leads the authorities to consider evacuating the small town in peace. But the eruption and the threat of a pyroclastic eruption caused widespread panic.

This was during the heyday of what Peter Jackson would come to refer to as "Bigatures"; absurdly large miniatures. The model volcano they used for this movie had to be built/stored in an aircraft hangar. And then they actually blew it up.

Practical effects and less CGI, thus it still stands up today, unlike today's movies which look awful upon viewing. Everything is CGI and they don't even try.

This movie shows that blockbuster cinema was at it's peak in the 90s. This film was only a mediocre success at best and yet it manages to look and feel better then today's big name franchises because of the quality practical effects and attention to detail.

Interestingly, during the Mt. St. Helens Eruption, a guy driving a VW camper actually outran the pyroclastic flow after taking a few pictures of the blast Fortunately, his vehicle was not facing the mountain when he got in

In fact the film was primarily based on the St. Helens eruption but some other volcanic events inspired this film, one being the 1991 Pinatubo eruption. Many elements of both eruptions were put together for this. And Mt. St. Helens is the establishing shots for the film.

Uhhh... This movie was based on the St Helens massive eruption in Oregon on 1980 . THAT was a HUGE pyroclastic cloud and flow Also check out the pyroclastic cloud of Guatemala's "Volcán de Fuego" some years ago

Well a pyroclastic flow can be produced from most vei's due to it being a heavy mix of ash and rock but at the speed, density, amount of material and type of volcano I'd say most likely VEI 5 (also fun fact VEI is logromitic meaning a vei 3 is about a thousand more powerful then a vei 1)

oh man i wish new movies would use practical effects and enhance them with CGI instead of making everything with CGI. they could make it look so bloody damn realistic with practical effects. CGI made stuff still has that weird look that your brain can tell is fake.
