I am glad you made a comparison between the two. I do think you might want to clarify some operational details. DANTE....like MADI...is a transmission protocol. DANTE is not responsible for the 'conversion' you highlight. That is dependent on the device itself...which is why you found no difference between connecting the Grace Design via DANTE vs SPDIF. There are examples online that definitively show DANTE is bit perfect in transmission. If you are using one of the cheap AVIO dongles for AD or DA conversion...then you are indeed reliant on that devices' quality for the AD or DA conversion. Likewise, if you were using speakers that connect via DANTE....then whatever is coming out of the speakers is being converted from digital to analog via the built-in converters on the speakers. However, if you are using (for example) an AVIO AES to DANTE dongle...the transmission should be bit perfect. Bottom line: there is no 'audio quality' difference between DANTE and MADI when configured identically...because they are transmission protocols...not audio protocols. CLOCKING: Generally, when we speak of 'clocking' in digital audio, it is the conversion clock for the AD/DA converters. In DANTE world, we are talking about a NETWORK clock, which determines packet arrival synchronization. Two different things that use similar terminology. This is also why you HAVE to have a WORD CLOCK master on MADI (MADI protocol does not carry word clock and you have to synchronize two devices), but do not need it on DANTE, since DANTE uses packet synchonization for already 'converted' audio. If you had signal degredation in DANTE, it was because either the end conversion back to analog was different than on the MADI side and sub-par (for instance, if you were using DVS, it will only go up to 48k...so if MADI was carrying 96k and DVS was converting back at 48k...there will definitely be a difference in quality), OR...your network was improperly configured. Additionally, using optical fiber network cabling / switches, transmission of DANTE signals can go into the kilometers as well. I'm not against MADI at all...just wanted to give DANTE a fair shake as there are misconceptions out there. Great video!

Around halfway through you discuss splitting MADI off to different destination. The device that would accomplish that is called a MADI router. SSL and RME manufacture them.

What are some different ideas of devices that are Dante enabled that one could use in a studio? Just looking for as many use cases as possible for Dante in the studio. Thanks!

@pdmcrew80 yeh I know exactly what you are talking about. It’s a great unit and very practical for flexible multiple Madi routing.

I'm not going to watch the full video because it starts out by saying MADI is audio over network which is false. Madi is simply optical digital audio transmission like adat or aes, passing 32io per cable at 96k or 64io at 48k. I prefer madi unless you need to route audio all over the place between multiple rooms etc, as described in your example. I'd still prefer a madi router if possible.

Hey I really appreciate the video. I'm currently working with a studio that decided to switch their entire infrastructure over to Dante, (they have multiple rooms for recordings so they thought it'd be easier to mange). I noticed u said Dante can use Cat 5E or Cat6A cable, however with Cat6a being more of a common cable to purchase would it be wiser to invest in cat 7 for dante? Also shielded or unshielded. Naturally I would assume STP shielded. Love to get ur thoughts. Cheers!
@fadygergis6 ай бұрын
Between Cat 5/6/7 there isn’t much difference for Dante. But I definitely recommend shielded. Stay away from unshielded.
