This rotation technique of the body together with a particular movement of the arms is characteristic of the Shaolin Cannon Fist. This is what Master Liang Yi Quan taught us at the Shaolin temple in the 1980s, but today I often see this Taolu performed without the movement of the arms. It is a serious loss, of a fundamental application against holds from behind.

Beautiful. Thank you as always, teacher Dante. This would be very good to drill with a partner trying to apply the Rear Naked Choke, that so many men of bad character are ready to assault others with these days, even to the point of death or brain injury. RIP, Jordan Neely. No Justice, no Peace! I wonder if rotation can be performed on the ground too?

Great video sir. Very informative, as usual. I was wondering....can this technique be applied as a shoulder throw? I mean, in the event of a rear choke (rear naked choke or even something like a guillotine choke) with the arm around the neck?

Yes David, it can also be used to unbalance and not just to free oneself 🙏🏽

Interesting! I wonder if this would be an effective technique against a properly placed "rear naked choke" and by proper I mean from a jiu-jitsu perspective. I know how to defend against the rear choke where a person places a hand on the top or back of the head but if they place it on their own shoulder and put their chin over that arm, or "lock the choke", then I have no idea what to do and it is a deadly situation. The technique that you show would also work in the first case but I'm not sure if it would as well in the second. Here is a short and very specific video on the choke I'm talking about from a jiu jitsu legend kzbin.infooYDe-hrazL8 In that video the example is on the ground but the same concept works just as well standing. Later today when I meet up with my training partner I'll test this technique against that choke and see if it gives me at least some chance of getting out of it. In practical real life situations that choke is deadly and a person only has a few seconds to do something about it. I suspect that it might be an effective defense against a properly set rear choke from a jiu-jitsu perspective. If not, can you suggest some techniques that maybe come from one of the systems that you know as a defense against such a choke? Most of my focus has been on preventing that choke from getting properly set in the first place but it happens and happens a lot in competition since it is one of the most common submissions. This might be useful for the case where a person is standing and the choke is properly set

There are dedicated techniques, but it is said that from the Qinna (joint locks, holds and strangulations) one defends oneself only by acting in advance or if the opponent does not know how to do them well. The aim of the strikers is to avoid the very short distance, the aim of the wrestlers is to seek the very short distance. The ideal is to bring the opponent onto terrain that is not his.

@@DanteBasili even if it doesn't help much in that very specific case where that specific choke is already set, it is useful in the process of trying to keep someone from getting it properly set in the first place. thank you again for the interesting and useful content! I keep learning truly useful things from your channel. I hope my bringing up situations from other martial arts isn't too annoying. I tend to learn best when I try to apply new techniques to situations I'm already familiar with. I like that experimental part of the process where I ask "I wonder if x would work well against y" and I don't particularly care which "art" y or x is from. if it works in a practical situation and or develops useful attributes over time then I add it to my toolbox of techniques
