The heavy charcoal lines over the thin delicate washes: very sensuous.

I didn't think I would enjoy this one but when the charcoal came out I was hooked. It looks like a good way of loosening up. Thank you.

Finished work or not, your demo produced a very pleasing piece. It's loose, as you suggest, with a strong feeling of movement and rhythm. The colours are soft and harmonious too, with subtle shading. Viewed as a demo only, it shows what is possible with a limited pallet. I was pleased to see the close up of your box of charcoal. I have compressed charcoal and some in pencil form. Neither give the rich black that yours does. It 's proof that not all charcoal is equal. You get what you pay for. I'm going to get some in pure stick form now. Another fine demo.

Thanks, had a few technical issues with the lights for some reason, a little bit of flickering. I enjoy these type of demos so hope they provide inspiration for others. Glad you appreciated the close up of the charcoal, I'm going feature these kind of shots in future videos as it's a good way to show exactly what I'm using in each demo. Appreciate your feedback.

I love this type of demo from you. You keep moving, which helps to see the energy that comes around in your finished project. I am also hearing impaired so visuals are very important to me. And, it is like every time I watch you I learn something. Very inspiring as always! I think real time is great for these. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks for your positive comments, I am encouraged by your response it is important that these demos inspire others to try out some of the techniques with their own work and I hope by filming them like this helps.

Loved it and now I know what to do with all those watercolour paintings I have set aside cause I just don't like them … wow thanks for the inspiration Dan and I guess one would spray a fixative over the finished product? And once again thanks for sharing your wonderful abundance of knowledge so freely love and sunshine to you
@DanTirels5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your positive comments. Always spray charcoal with a fixative spray, or try hairspray as a cheaper alternative.

Really useful video and so good there is no irritating music or dribbly commentary. Thank you

This is exciting stuff. You have inspired me to begin using charcoal as a "between" layer with acrylics. Prior to seeing your technique, I had only used charcoal as the initial painting sketch on canvas. Now I see it can be used to increase depth and texture. Thank you for your inspiring videos.

Thanks for the demo. I’m going to try it. I’d love to see more.. Why the teeny tiny brush?
@DanTirels5 жыл бұрын
I normally use a bigger brush, but thought I'd give this a try. I didn't want to overload the paper with too much water.

Thanks for using a bit more pressure when you made your basic charcoal sketch. Before this video, your initial sketch was drawn so lightly I could barely see it. Anyway, happy New Year, Dan, I am so glad you're sharing your techniques with us. I look forward to more great videos.

Thanks, I noticed that on one of the other demos, I blame the bright lights I use for filming but remembered to use a darker line with this one.

I have been looking for an image construction like this. I want to know how you seal the surface to protect it. Thanks for your time and talent.
@DanTirels5 жыл бұрын
I didn't apply anything to the paper before I started, but once complete will seal the work with a fixative or maybe spray with a matt varnish.
@nellcourt89285 жыл бұрын
Dan Tirels thank you. I have been sealing my paper with a coat of medium and having better results. I just haven’t found anything I understood would protect and seal the finished work after I added pastel or charcoal. I enjoyed watching you construct this one very much. Thanks

When you start sketch ing, do you have a direction that your going in? Or is it more random? If its random , man you have a line or triangle or something like real fast. I get a blank paper and it stays blank for a bit. I had that problem a long time ago and a art teacher came up and made a random mark on my paper. Yhen it wasent blank no mo. I still haven't trained myself yet... Any advice? THANK you for the video.
