I like how honest they are. They tell you they can talk 1 language. They do not count a language they struggling to talk. I think they can talk and understand english but they do not include it because they struggle to talk english. Other people will tell you they can talk other languages or a little but they can only do greetings and count to 10 and few sentences and that is not enough to count a language as a language you know.

I'm from Mexico City, and I am fluent in four languages. While most Mexicans take English classes, they often struggle to speak it well due to limited opportunities for practice. However, in border states like Tamaulipas, Tijuana, and Ciudad Juarez, you will encounter a higher number of people who are fluent in English. In contrast, many Europeans effortlessly speak three or four languages because their countries are geographically close, granting them easy access to interactions with individuals who speak different languages.

Very interesting. I see a lot of people in Mexico City wanting to learn German. I guess maybe because of the shared Spanish-German heritage in the country, which has a longstanding history. By just looking at the feasts and music as an example.

For people from a German, or French speaking country: Many Mexicans actually have a genuine interest in learning German and French. But is hard to find a language education course with enough quality for learn it and accesible to the public. With French is a little bit easy because we have the "Alliance Française" and Mexicans can travel to Canada "somehow easy". (Mainly for student exchange) but not everyone have access to that opportunity. With German is hard, because even if you find a course (That is not always cheap). Unlike English (Which many people learn mainly because of work or because is the only language accessible to learn it) People like German or French because of the culture, or how it sounds. Other languages that people might be interested to learn, might be Japanese, Italian, and maybe Portuguese and Chinese. (And recently Korean)

I read through the comments and wanted to say that if you go to France and dont speak the language, you may have the impression that people ignore you…or that they dont make any effort to understand you… BUT, as a French (married with a spanish speaker), I can say that most French people dont speak another language and they rapidly feel uncomfortable and even stressed if they can’t understand. They just dont know how to handle the situation ! Dont take it personnaly 🙃

Anyways I really LOVE Slavic languages, and right now I'm learning about DEEPICHASTIYA (Деепричастия) which is a very VERY difficult topic for me because we, as romance-languages speakers, don't have such thing nor GRAMMATICAL CASES, but still, I'm in love with the Russian pronunciation of words! I also love this Ukrainian singer who used to sing in Russian, her name is ЛУНА and she's an indie singer and her songs helped me a lot with studying Russian!

Welcome to Mexico City! Being a first year high school student (prepa 9!) in cdmx, i'm fluent in 8: spanish, mixtec (I'm from Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca though i'm not indigenous), english, italian, french, portuguese, mandarin chinese and japanese. And like a 25% arabic. If i could master one more it's gonna be nahuatl, the crazily beautiful language of the Aztecs (Mexicas). I'm really into different languages, or even more, the different but amazing cultures behind them. No joke and if one day i have money i'll travel around our world, surprising native people with their native language 😍😂 And i'm preparing for the TOEFL exam right now, 100% out of interest. Have done tpos and my score is around 108~110, still trying to improve Not being sure if it's good to say this here, but SEP should really enhance English education in México, considering how low our English level is compared to other countries, even other countries in latam. It shall have a big impact if the right efforts are really paid

As a french speaker , i think people choose to learn a second language for 2 reasons : #1 : easy and pratical : english is very easy to learn and practical to travel and work # 2 : the sound of a language , as for exemple Italien and french sound sexy , very soft and calm. but it depends on the education of the person and the region ; german sounds masculine , mysterious and strong ( confident ) ; spanish sounds beautiful when the person speaks slowly , i find it difficult to hear when the person speaks fast like in Spain . Mexicans are very family oriented and good values ... most of them . As a french speaker i sometimes wonder if the person is angry while talking in arabic, russian, portuguese , indian ... for me these languages are not sexy

As a Chinese person currently traveling in Mexico City, I find learning Spanish to be quite challenging. Spanish ( being one of the Romance languages) has unique conjugation and pronunciation of certain syllables, which definitely take some getting used to. But I am determined to learn it. To me, Spanish is so lively and rhythmic, and I really want to converse with the friendly food vendors who indulge me every day with godly delicious tacos. I came to Mexico for the weather (I go to school in Canada), but I have discovered that Mexico has so much more to offer than just nice weather. The food, art, history, and optimism of Mexicans are priceless, even though there are some social and economic issues that still need to be addressed (all societies have their own share of social malaises). Mandarin Chinese can be difficult, but some parts of it, like grammar, are actually quite intuitive. The ideographic scripts and tones may come off as a bit challenging, but Chinese people all speak Mandarin with some variation of accent, locally influenced. Even if you eliminate the tone or spell the words in Pinyin when communicating with Chinese, it won't be too much of an issue when you're still learning it. We always admire foreigners who are willing to make an effort to learn Mandarin Chinese. Who knows, maybe it could be fun! Good luck :)
