Hi dan, Awsome advice and clearly explained, have been playing golf for about 25 years most of which shooting in the 90's. Four years ago I hit a bad spot and couldn't hit my irons whatsoever, was shanking and duffing every shot but hitting my woods and driver ok. I have been working hard on my game ever since having lessons and practicing a few days a week. I now I hit my irons great but am struggling with my driver and woods, pulling tee shots left and the odd slice. Have been hitting mostly 5 irons off the tee and been shooting in the mid 80's for the last couple of years. I watched your video this morning before my round and implemented it into my driver swing. I had the best round of my life, shot 78, actually shot a 1 over par on the back nine, "36". It's been my aim to beat 80 this year, I can not thank you enough. Keep up the great work. Kindest regards, John

Such great instruction! My current swing thoughts are (from the top of the backswing) 1. clearing my left knee (open and towards target) and 2. getting my right elbow in front of my hip. #1 helps me avoid turning early with my right hip. #2 helps me get my arms out in front giving me room to hit the ball. I'll work on that open handed grip idea to feel the club swallowing out in the early downswing. Thanks so much for your videos!

Really enjoyed this lesson, not found as good instruction of how the arms work in the swing on youtube until I discovered this. Great work keep them coming.

Fantastic explanation. So many online golf coaches don’t explain the overall intention of their swing, which renders the elements they are teaching potentially incompatible with your own.

At about 4:50 in this video, Dan is describing my crummy 15 handicap swing that I have had most of my life. Finally, someone other than Wayne Defrancesco confirms this for me, but in using different verbiage - which is always helpful. Rather than just the silly admonition to avoid casting the club from the top (something I've never done) Dan is showing here how it is quite possible to err, to come over the top, by virtue of being too obsessed with turning the chest through too quickly, outracing the arms so much that the shaft steepens in transition rather than flattens. He's absolutely right that when this happens in transition, it forces you to attempt to flatten the club late. Wayne has shown me this on video, and man is it hard habit to break. I also took lessons at my local GolfTech last year, and could see this happening on video, but couldn't fix it, no matter what the pro told me to do or what drills to practce. I think Dan in one of his other vids mentions that the arms swing independent of the body - and that's an epiphany right there. As well, his explanation of what I thought was a paradox of Hogan is spot on - the left arm separates from the body coming down, and then re-connects to the body after impact (he's right that the overhead camera view of Hogan with a driver (in a studio - Hogan dressed in white with a black wall background in the face-on view) absolutely shows this left arm separation. This is awesome to hear it explained this way, so much so that I paused this vid at 4:55 just so that I could write this comment. Can't wait to watch the rest of this vid.

Just finished wathching the rest of this vid. Outstanding explanation. This is one of those that I think I can actually use to make an actual change while on the range. This will incentivize me to drag the video cameras and tripods with me in my car next time I practice. Thanks Dan.

Hi Dan, best explanation I've seen on shallowing in downswing. Question: every time I do this swing thought about getting hands away from me and butt pointing forward but it feels like I'm too far away from the ball. If I stand closer I start to hit it fat and get no compression. Any ideas? Have you heard this before?

Hogan said in his book that once he started the downswing he would think about pulling down hard on the club. That can only happen if the arms can clear and also clearly can only happen after you get to the left side. What's interesting is that he is pulling the club down towards the pull during rotation. That is how you compress the ball. My problem forever was trying to swing around to hit the ball rather than aggressively getting my hands going down straight to the ball. This move will instantly free your arms momentarily to get through before gluing back to the left side. It will also help you from rotating too soon on the downswing. Once you get it it is completely liberating.

Troy Lee I'm glad you got it because I worked on this teaching for over a decade and could never get it or have that "aha" moment.I would try even swinging beyond the ball 5 inches to assure it was Shallowing and I was always steep regardless.

The Hogan twist forces the the right upper arm forward. Gluing it to the upper chest. I think this is the real key. Gluing the upper arms to the chest. So, the right elbow does not lag behind which leads to a down the line flip. Which is the other way to hit the ball... But Hogans way glues the club face to the body in the correct spot, on the portion of the swing on the club plane on either side of the ball, into and out of impact.

Dan.. You say you want left arm away from body, then the return to the torso...ie left elbow snapping back to the left hip.. But what of staying "connected"? Many players feel that the left arm must stay on the body....they feel the leverage against their upper chest... I guess, as I type, that this can work in conjunction with your suggestions...upper stays levered to the upper torso (connected) and the arm still works away then returns (left elbow)....right? My issue is that my hips move / sllide away to the left to a point I cannot get my right elbow to my right hip soon enough. I Enjoy your videos....

Love the video mate really think this will help my game but I was wondering how you think its best to incorporate this into a full swing? swing slower at first or half shots maybe? I just think sometimes its hard to make the movement when your hitting full shots on the course cheers mate keep up the good work
