Between 1934 - 1945 the German UFA (Universum Film AG) produced a number of cities movies, amongst others "Gdansk. Land at sea and stream", made in 1939 by Eugen Yorck. His portrait of the city almost totally foregoes off-texts. It simply wants to impress through visual imagery. Only one tourist bus scene and the settings from the Gdansk fish market contain scripted statements from the protagonists.
Noteworthy is the idealizing film language which at that time adhered to almost all German city portraits. This way, quiet landscapes, historic buildings, middle-class cultural life and energetic craftsmanship were the preferred movie content. The real social city life was almost always excluded or reduced to harmless, innocent image settings. On the one hand one could advertise this touristically at home and abroad, on the other hand such city portraits did not rub up former official propaganda interests. Today, these innocuously appearing, historic cityscapes are esteemed witnesses of a formerly undestroyed German city landscape.
Eugen Yorck (* Nov. 26th, 1912 † Nov. 18th, 1991), director of the above-mentioned film, joined the UFA in 1937 and there produced propaganda, teaching, cultural and industrial films. After 1945 he directed some well-known German cine films and worked from the 1960s onwards for the German television.

In Deutschland ließ die UFA (Universum Film AG) zwischen 1934 - 1945 eine Reihe von Städtefilmen produzieren, u.a. den von Eugen Yorck 1939 hergestellten Film “Danzig. Land an Meer und Strom“. Sein Stadtporträt verzichtet fast vollständig auf Off-Texte und will nur durch die Bildsprache wirken. Lediglich eine Touristenbusfahrt-Szene und die Einstellungen vom Danziger Fischmarkt enthalten gescriptete O-Töne.
Bemerkenswert ist die idealisierende Bildsprache, die allerdings zu jener Zeit fast allen deutschen Städteporträts anhing. So waren ruhige Landschaften, historische Gebäude, bürgerliches Kulturleben und tatkräftiges Handwerk bevorzugte Filminhalte. Das wirklich soziale Stadtleben wurde fast immer ausgeklammert oder auf unverfängliche, arglose Bildeinstellungen reduziert. Einerseits konnte man damit touristisch im In- und Ausland werben, andererseits eckten solche Städteporträts nicht an damalige Propagandainteressen. Heute sind diese unverfänglich wirkenden historischen Stadtpanoramen geschätzte Zeitzeugen einer ehemals unzerstörten, deutschen Städtelandschaft.
Eugen Yorck (*26.11.1912 †18.11.1991), Regisseur des o.g. Films, kam 1937 zur UFA und drehte dort Propaganda-, Lehr-, Kultur- und Industriefilme. Nach 1945 produzierte er einige bekannte Kinofilme und arbeitete ab den 1960er Jahren auch für das Fernsehen.
