Firestone Walker is another good example of a spin off brand that is working very well with 805 although I never buy it. I had a very enjoyable habit years ago of always picking up the Bastard at our favorite neighborhood pizza joint. I didn't drink it for years but I did pick up a stovepipe of the Bastard not that long ago and it still delivers with a big wallop to the kisser.

I love this beer! I buy a six pack at least once a month. And I really loved Double Bastard too, but I haven't had that in a long time (more than a decade) ...

Great value too! And it's in 16 oz!

I first had this beer over 20 years ago! I wasn't quite legal, and had zero taste for beer yet, and I thought this beer was literally a novelty joke beer. Nobody could ever possibly drink this for real, too ridiculously bitter and terrible. Took me a few years to realize this was an actual beer people drank on purpose. Now I can put down a double bastard and enjoy the heck out of it. Weird how all of our palates change over time, and similarly. When hazies were brand new and almost impossible to get (10+ years ago) I couldn't get enough - even paid up for some of the New England big boys shipped to me on eBay, traveled for some releases, amazing. I also enjoyed some of the milkshake IPAs that came out. The turning point was the slushy beers for me, a brewery near me called 450 North started making these ridiculously thick, fruit & sugar bombs. They also made some (thick sweet) "real" IPAs with actual hops. That ended the pursuit of low bitterness IPAs for me. Now I go for old school, filtered, bitter IPAs most of the time (3 Floyds, Fatheads, Bell's, Stone, etc). I don't mind hazies at all, but I much prefer those with a good amount of bitterness or even some hop burn for balance.

Sounds like a similar journey that I went through and I assume the same for many! I would agree with your last few breweries and more bitter stuff. I've been itching for those more than hazies in the past few years.

I'd be shocked, if I saw this, again, in southeastern Louisiana.

Hope you do!

Joe Senigaglia and I reviewed this a few months ago. We both thought it was still excellent. You don't really encounter beers this bitter anymore. BJCP considers it American Strong Ale style. It's pretty much the only product of that style left as far as I know.

Love that is shows its bitterness the way it does.

Firestone anniversary is the only widely available strong ale I can think of.
