A few things for non-Irish friends. First, the version of Tayto in Northern Ireland isn't what Dara is talking about or eating. He's talking about the original and better Tayto Cheese & Onion that you can only get in the Republic. The NI one's aren't bad but they're just not the same. Second, not only did Tayto invent Cheese & Onion flavoured crisps, they invented the means by which crisps are flavoured and then gave away the secret so that other companies could do it too. So, whether it's Walkers or Pringles or anything else, it all originated with Joe Murphy and his Tayto Cheese & Onion. Prior to that, crisps were usually plain and came with a little packet of salt to spread over them. Third, the Tayto Cheese & Onion crisp sandwich is sublime. Another sublime Tayto sandwich is the Corned Beef and Tayto Salt & Vinegar sandwich (Cheese & Onion is also great with with corned beef). Fourth, anyone who says King's Crisps are better has no soul.

When I was a kid my parents had a friend called Helen, who worked in quality control for Smiths Crisps….every time they were working on a new flavour she would turn up at my school with boxes and boxes of crisps, in plain white packets, and my class had to conduct a taste test…how popular did that make me!!!! We were used as guinea pigs for the salt n shake bags of crisps that were relaunched in the early seventies…that one I remember clearly….the others are a bit hazy though I seem to recall they tried out Chipsticks on us as well

@zakmartin4 жыл бұрын
We (Irish people) didn't always spell crack as the Irish-language version, craic. It only became craic when the drug crack became popular. When I was a kid growing up in Ireland, we spelled it crack. The word craic did not exist as a word in the Irish language until the mid 60s. It derives from the word crack (and not the other way round, as many people believe).
@cyrodilicbrandy3 жыл бұрын
@@zakmartin my local newspaper in my home county of Cumbria (community of Irish descent in parts) still has the name Cumbria Crack…I wish they would just use “craic” 😆😆
@zakmartin3 жыл бұрын
@@cyrodilicbrandy But Cumbria crack has a slightly different meaning to Irish craic, doesn't it? My understanding is that Cumbria crack is news or gossip, whereas Irish craic is having a laugh or taking the p***. Do you know this one: "And they'll say 'Good on you Paddy' With your boat-fare in your hand. The craic was good in Cricklewood And they wouldn't leave the Crown." ?

Northern Tayto licenced the name and recipe off the Southern Company and the other user is right Tayto creator Joe Murphy did invent Cheese and Onion and the actual whole process of flavouring crisps or as what our American friends would call chips. However I am personally glad I live near the border and have access to the Southern Version because I do prefer them myself because they may have had the same original recipe but different spuds or oil must make the world of difference!

@afivey Sarcasm aside, Tayto did invent the flavour. Joe Murphy and Seamus Burke created it. They also invented Salt and Vinegar. Before that, the only added flavouring on crisps came from little packets of salt included with the crisps. They were pioneers in how flavouring was added to potato chips. Every crisp company in the world owes their many flavours to Tayto. It's how we took our revenge on the potato after the famine. We drowned it in grease and artificial flavours lol
