In this edition of Tarikh, Prateeksha talks about how Aurangzeb became King. After defeating Dara Shikoh in the battle of Samugarh, Aurangzeb kept the emperor Shah jahan in house arrest and declared himself as emperor. Meanwhile Aurangzeb brother, Shah Shuja, the second son of Shah Jahan, also declared himself Mughal Emperor in Bengal. The battle of Khajwa was fought on January 5, 1659, between the newly crowned Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and Shah Shuja.

He was the primary reason because of which Mughal rule disintegrated after his death and the process started well in his last years itself. Again the reason was that Islam went too much into his head and spoke more to him than just governance. That is the tragedy of Islam. As it gets into the heads of rulers, you get Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. Same things happen with families. I have seen many families broken because the parents started taking Islam too seriously. Some say if Dara Shikoh has become king so Hindu and Muslims would have united as sealed and Britishers couldn’t have done anything against India. But I believe if Dara Shikoh had become king, so because of his extreme liberalism, no war experience, and as his tactics were often based on astrology, he would end up collapsing the Mughal empire. I am pretty sure about it because when Alamgir Aurangzeb became king his priority was to crush the rebellion in the empire as there were many. However, as I am being a fan of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, I would have preferred Dara Shikoh over Aurangzeb.
