Something that's been on my mind ever since I first played SMB3 which was when it was brand new. When you go into a hammer bro battle and it's one with just a single bro (example World 1) Sometimes the last block has a fireflower and sometimes it's just a breakable block. Is that just random or is there a setup for that?

If you're close enough to the wall when you kick the shell it will not harm Mario. You can confirm this by grabbing a shell, walking up against a wall and releasing it. It'll bounce off the wall and travel behind Mario without hitting him

A 5 minute run is has to be as optimised as possible so that's why it was long. In SMB3 you could probably skip tutorials for certain levels like autoscrollers. Just outline the basic movement with Pspeed + in the harder stages, and it shouldn't be too long.

He's not going for the WR, it's harder than you think and even if Darb plays perfectly he will still lose most of runs due to RNG and there is nothing he can do about it. This WR is crazy optimised and has really good luck.

I don't plan to challenge the record in this game. There are too many factors out of the player's control. I do enjoy learning the high level strats for many of the stages though. My time is still high enough where I don't have to worry too much about randomness as long as I play well. When it gets to the point where I feel like I'm really being limited by the game instead of my own abilities I will likely take a break from the game.

The top goal of speedrunning is getting a WR, but 99.999% of speedrunners will never get one. That does not make speedrunning any less meaningful though. Thats like saying an athlete should just stop persuing his sport because his chance of getting a WR is too slim.

booombasa Because WR in this category is extremely hard to reach. It even had an element of good RNG in it as well which is a deterrent. Unless darbian dedicates the next few months into beating the record, it's not something that can just be beaten in a matter of weeks. The guy who got the record is really good at this game and there's a reason he holds/(held?) WR in every category this game has. Darbian wants to be a variety speedrunner so that's why his goal for SMB3 isn't close to WR. His time is still really good anyway. Like top 10 on the leaderboards.

I work in an office for 8 hours a day during the week and adding in hours staring at a CRT TV in the evening leads to eye strain for me. The glasses helped reduce that a bit to the point where I'm not uncomfortable playing.

No, I'm continuing to work on it. I wanted to at least get a 52:XX before moving on, but it didn't mean I would switch games upon getting it. I am confident I can do a bit better so I'd like to keep trying until I no longer enjoy it or feel that I have hit a wall.

As long as you can physically play a game, you can speedrun it. If you aren't concerned with getting on a leaderboard, you don't need anything other than a way to play the game and a phone or some other way to time your run. Streaming makes things more complicated but isn't necessary to speedrun.
