I interviewed David (such a nice guy!) in 1993, for a fanzine, when he came here to Brazil. He had to move to Europe and part of this was made there. European comics and arts in general became a great influence (he said he to me he was afraid that the sudden change of style would upset Miller and Marvel). The Urich face is based on Edward Munch, for example.

This channel has been driving much of my artistic inspiration lately. While I'll probably never accomplish half of what Masters like Mazzucchelli have, it feels good to get it out of my head and on paper. Thanks Ed, Jim, and Tom!

The Artisan Edition is a good budget buy, soft cover has all the stuff minus the blown up art on inside of the hardcover.

20:04 - That splash page always amazed me - the subtle cross composition of the whole page and the little cross hanging on the wall...

When I was in NYC for the first time, what I noticed were all the water towers! It was Steve Ditko’s New York!! I went nuts. That Rockefeller Center panel that Ed comments on in #229 immediately made me think of Miller’s very first Batman story “Wanted Santa Claus…Dead or Alive” from the Christmas 1979 DC Special Series 21.

Tom loved your Kirby book after watching this episode i picked up a copy, also really enjoyed your Grand Design Books.

Owning every other version of it, I picked this up and it is beautifully done. The size is magnificent and all the extra content and overlays is a game changer. That said, I missed the inking and color. I never realized how much they bring. It really isn't the best way to read the story but as a collector it is a must

Since Mazzucchelli was inking his own pencils by the this point, the Artist’s Edition is fully inked. (In fact, that’s true of all the Artist’s Editions, whether the marquee artist inked them or not.)

after you rundown of the single issues I got the artisan edition and now will do a turn page review on my second watch to see what is different besides the size. And yes we need artist edition of Batman year one

I think this works better in black and white, for my personal taste, at least. Do you guys find that the colors sort of blurred the image on this book? Almost gives it a "fuzzy" old television appearance.

Wild how much of Mazzuchelli's style shows thru in current artists like Chris Samnee, Jorge Fornes, David Aja....all those folks gotta kick a little back to Mazzuchelli for sure. Reading Batman Year One in like 4th or 5th grade, nothing like it
@michaelbrent49652 жыл бұрын
@ 32:07 those last 2 panels, bottom of the right-hand page-there's a definite Eisner influence there. Maybe more than influence, it could be a straight-up homage. If he only had a mask and fedora Matt would look just like The Spirit. Never noticed it till I saw it here in b&w.

- He wears the flag. - I hadn't noticed. Daredevil/Matt Murdock is a perfect character in Miller's hands. Also a strength that Captain America is not reduced to a parody in this story, it would have been so easy. It's often mentioned how much of Miller's Batman is copied over to the films (mostly scene by scene), but the doubt about what he represents that builds in Steve Rogers character throughout the MCU I feel might be more subtly alluded to this issue with Captain America facing Nuke. TERRIBLE waste of Nuke in the Jessica Jones tv-series btw. Would be nice to hear you guys talk about general or specific film adaptations as a one-off at some point. I can't recall if you ever talk about it! To have Tom Scioli back is also nice!

Is this book the same size as the Dark knight returns edition?
@jasonlapidus18125 ай бұрын
The DK Gallery Edition is on 18x12 or just slightly bigger paper. Add in the hardcover, and the book sits significantly taller than the 11x17 (+hardcover) artists’ edition.

DC needs to agree to do the Batman Year One Artist Edition. If they give the ok, IDW will do it. Right now, it' DC's court.

I wonder if there was any backlash from the fans too. It takes some balls to shift to a more abstract style in a mainstream superhero book in the 80s.

It would be great if Marvel would try their best to get this put in an R rated movie And not all the “cool” scenes pieced out like they did DKR in BVS
