I can't believe you guys didn't bring up the dude who went over the falls in a barrel with his dog. He put a hole in the barrel for air (or water, I feel like he didn't think that through), then put himself and his dog in. The dude died because the dog stuck his nose out the hole to breathe, suffocating the dude. The dog lived.

The cushion on water you mentioned around 8:00 makes sense. If you fell onto still water that would most likely skin you alive, but the fact that there's water coming down along with you allows a buffer zone of bubbles before you're forced under the water.

If you go to the Ripley's Believe It or Not museum in niagara falls, they have an actual barrel that went over the falls and you can stand inside it. Whoever went over it was pretty small and I doubt Rhett or Link would fit in it. They also probably know where the "good spots" are because of the falls going dry around 1900.

as a mechanical engineering major, I'd vouch for a five-point safety harness suspended within the barrel with heavy duty springs. you'd want the barrel to be as large as possible to allow yourself minimum peak deceleration.

It actually makes sense that the kid survived. He would be lighter than an adult, so #1 he wouldn't have hit the water as hard and #2 would have "bounced" back up to the surface a lot faster. Plus, kids are more flexible and less likely to be injured in a fall as badly as adults are.

I think dare devil and adrenaline junkie are not the same thing. The whole slew of people who went over the falls and people like Nik Wallenda who crossed it on a tight rope last year ARE daredevils . They did something new, unestablished ,. Adrenaline junkie is more the standard skydiving, motorcycle driving, bunjie jumping , car racing type and also maybe some criminals... Activities are more dangerous than not doing them but still are tried and standardized . Also , I am pretty sure that it has to do with adrenaline and dopamine , and requiring higher levels of dopamine to feel satisfied And not testasterone levels . Testasterone just makes the object (or the subject) aggressive and violent .that is not the same as risk seeking,
