Thank you for uploading the entire serial. My father had Alan Barbour's books about the movie serials in the 1970s. Dad made the serials sound exciting to us and told us he saw the serials at the movies in the late 1940s and on TV in the 1950s. Dad used to let us stay up at night to watch "The Spy Smasher" serial and "The Purple Monster Strikes" on TV . These serials were compressed into a movie and shown late at night on Channel 11 , KTTV , Los Angeles and Channel 13, KCOP , Los Angeles. I still have a couple of those Alan Barbour books and about four video cassettes about the serials that Dad bought in the late 1980s. I watched a lot of the old time serials on KZbin and think about Dad. I wish he was still alive to watch his beloved " chapters."

One of the best serials by Republic Pictures. Also like this serial, the music for many of their serials is also a standout. Universal and Columbia serials don't come close to Republic serials. Those serials seem slow compared to the fast pace style of Republic. I like Flash Gordon at Universal and Batman at Columbia but if ( Superman also) they were made at Republic, they would have been even better.

This tunnel has to go from San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach or Dana Point to get to (what I imagine is) Santa Catalina Island. Why is another question. This is one of the absolute best serials of the era and is an excellent print. A great plot....a great cast....and a great contribution....many thanks!

Thankfully roles like that played by Fred "Snowflake" Toones are a thing of the past. The cruel way he's treated detracts from an otherwise fun serial. Besides appearing in similar roles in many films of the '30's and '40's Toones actually ran the shoeshine stand at Republic Studios.
@misterlyle.14 күн бұрын
It takes quite some time for cultural awareness to mature. The Silent Era aligns with the early childhood of modern cinema, the time of these Serials just a little later, maybe we could call it the elementary years of cinema. While today there are numerous examples of exceptionally sophisticated move-making, in many ways it seems like film is still on the way to its peak of quality and consciousness. From an early 21st Century perspective, I would agree that Mr. Toones' comic-relief character is a bit cringeworthy, but there is no shortage of other films where actors and the characters they portray are clearly victims of appalling treatment.

Ooooo! Another serial with Charles Middleton (Ming the Merciless of Flash Gordon, Zaroff of "The Miracle Rider")! Bruce Bennett (Tiny Dawson) portrayed Dr. Eric Lorimer in "The Alligator People" and appeared in at least two films with Humphrey Bogart ("The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and "Sahara") Carole Landis appeared in "Topper Returns" (1941) and "One Million B.C." (1940) and was one of the "Four Jills In A Jeep" (1944). Sadly, she died from a drug overdose in 1948 at 29. =(

Why is this movie serial here labelled a "TV serial"? Commercial broadcast television didn't even exist when this was made in 1939. It was shown in movie theatres. Serials were designed to bring patrons back to the theatres on a regular basis... that's what the "cliffhangers" in the episodes were for. Some of these serials were shown on television more than a decade later, because they were cheap to acquire, but they were not made for television.

This is a bit of a switch, usually the guys all wear hats and never a one loses his hat when fighting. In this serial, you can tell the good guys from the bad guys because the good guys DON'T wear hats. I am into the 9th or 10th episode and just realized: EXTREMELY little gun play or car crashes/explosions in this serial. Love all the serials with secret rooms, sliding panels, concealed hideouts.
@sclogse14 жыл бұрын
But a lot of fire. How about how the fights get better as the series goes on. Even some stunt moves near the end...that flip...

Most other serials that I have seen show folks jumping from cars at the last second before the car goes over a cliff. Not only do folks never get injured doing that, it doesn't even seem to get their clothes dirty...much less cause any clothing to tear. Apparently, clothes and people were very rugged before WW II ?

I am looking at this on a tablet, I don't see any logo anywhere. Not the first time though that people see things in these films that I don't see. Oops, now I see why I almost missed it: it's EXTREMELY inconspicuous and it pretty much disappears when you focus on the action. I wish tv networks would be as inconspicuous with their on air network logos.

Hi Kamandi , I remember the series about the Teen boy living in a new earth after "The Great Disaster". It was Jack Kirby's DC Comics 1970's series about animals ruling the earth. ( I think Jack Kirby got his idea from the 1968 , movie "Planet Of The Apes.)

I enjoyed the story until the Black servant showed up. Not every director of that era degraded people of color in their films. Unfortunately, even today, there are too many small minds in the world. Evidently in many main stream movies people of color often have two choices; be a racist’s fantasy stereotype or be invisible. Invisibility never looked so good.

OK. The story is good. But, whoever came up with the musical score should have their ears pulled off! Those repetitive vamps were so overused that it was almost impossible to watch. The first trumpeter should be given a gold medal for endurance. The rest of us need some therapy because listening to the same passages and chord progressions with the same orchestrations for so many times has to have some detrimental effect.
@wardjones2261 Жыл бұрын
This could be the best serial ever made and musically scored but it has been completely RUINED by outrageous, ridiculous, unnecessary editing. William Lava's music that punctuates all chapter endings is delightful but it's all missed here. Maestro Lava is undoubtedly spinning in his grave. X%$# shame.
