Dario Saric is a genuine joy to watch. The Croatian is a sensation that stands 6’10”. He bangs with the bigs on the boards. He spreads the floor reasonably as a four (although admittedly, his stroke is a little streaky), but it’s his playmaking that paves the way. The Homie's handles dazzle for days, and his vision leads to inventions that you wouldn’t imagine come from a guy that looks like that. The way he moves just isn’t smooth, but his ambidexterity absolutely absolves that, and his passing and scoring are what have kept Philly still somehow soaring. Just don’t sleep on Saric and the Sixers, because he will win Rookie of the Year, and when Philadelphia gets healthier, they’ll be a team in the future to fear.
If we are to trust the Process, and we absolutely should, Joel Embiid has said about Dario, “he’s the Rookie of the Year. That’s the guy.” It’s that kind of team first attitude that have made people love JoJo, but I urge people to listen. The fact is that some people will still vote for Embiid for RoY, and that’s a bit of a waste. We are, after all, no longer in January. He played 31 games the entire year (and averaged only 25.4 minutes per game when he DID play). Yes, he was absolutely undeniable when he was healthy, but you can’t give an award to a guy who didn’t even dress for half the year. Don’t get me wrong, I love Embiid, we ALL do, but he’ll be fine. That’s a future megastar if he can stay healthy. If you removed Embiid and his 31 games from the equation, the choice seems pretty clear. Dario has played all 75 games so far, leads all rookies in scoring (12.9 points per game), is second in rebounding (6.4 rebounds per), is eighth in assists (behind 7 point guards), LEADS rookies with 10 double-doubles, and is second in total minutes played. With apologies to UVA and the Bucks' Malcolm Brogdon, and the Golden Bears and Boston’s Jaylen Brown, let’s help the Homie bring home what he’s rightfully earned.
