While I wasn't personally a fan of These Violent Delights, I feel like if you liked that you would love: Confusions of Young Torless by Robert Musil and The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea by Yukio Mishima!

I really enjoyed the Scholomance Trilogy by Naomi Novik. It's more dark fantasy academia rather than pure dark academia, but I absolutely loved it!

I'm about halfway through Bloodmarked; the chapters go by very quickly. There are so many moments where I went "OMG! Whoa...whaat. Aha! Wait, huhn?" and then unexpected tears at some words of encouragement and hurry-your-arse-up at the end of chapter 18. I cannot wait to when you're ready to give us your thoughts when you've gotten through a solid chunk of the book.

Just finished up The Cloisters myself, and I totally agree. Like the descriptions of the building was amazing, and I would have loved even more of the artwork to be talked about, but so much of that was glossed over for the relationship stuff that was very meh. I will say, I stan Aruna - the only good person.

I loved Legendborn as well! 🎧 I listened to it on audiobook and would recommend that format! The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd was a Dark Academia book that I read recently and enjoyed. I heard about her deep dive into cartography when she talked about the book at an online book club event. I was fascinated! Now I want to read her book called The Book of M!

She has a complete epic fantasy romance trilogy called the War of Lost Hearts and the first book is called Daughter of No Worlds. She also has The Serpent and the Wings of Night which is the first book in a new series of hers. This one is also epic and has vampires in it. Seriously both of these series are just PHENOMENAL.

The game in The betrayals reminds me a bit of Welters in the Magicians trilogy, which was Fantasy Academia (Narnia Academia?). That could be an Academia read you would enjoy. The first book is a bit rough, but overall the series is one of the best things I've ever read.

The Betrayals... all of what you said, yes. I loved loved LOVED The Binding (read it because of your rec) and Betrayals just kind of went nowhere for me. As far as other dark academia books go, "Far Wilder Magic" has been on my tbr for some time but I can't remember if you've already read it or not... And hell yes for not reading Secret History, also could not do it, don't get the hype about it at all. Also also, I am FINALLY starting Legendborn because of you, now that the second book is out. Looking forward to that vid! :D

I read Once Upon a Broken Heart a few days and I am- OBSESSED!!! 😭😩 It was my first book by Garber and I instantly fell in love- everything just felt SOO whimsical and romantic and yet mysterious at the same time!! Currently almost done with The Ballad of Never After and damn, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it all day LONG!! 😳🤍 Thank you for recommending this beautiful piece of literature to me a year ago Cari, I am only too sorry that it took me THIS long to pick it up... @@Sarah-ss6fr Hmm I was the same way. I had Caraval on my tbr list for like 2 years but never got around to reading it, so I just decided to dive head-first into Once Upon a Broken Heart instead. If you've ever read Six of Crows before Shadow and Bone, then reading Once Upon a Broken Heart before Caraval is kinda the same thing... a few things might be confusing at first, but you'll understand the more you read. I haven't read Caraval yet, but I'll say this- a lot of people claim that if you read Once Upon a Broken Heart before reading the first series, you'll spoil one of the major plot lines/characters in Caraval. I'll probably read Caraval after I finish this series, and I don't really mind if some stuff is spoiled. But, idk if you'd prefer not to spoil yourself, so if you're that way, then I'd probably suggest reading Caraval first. 😂 Don't get me wrong though, if you decide to read Once Upon a Broken Heart first, you'll still enjoy it a lot, things will just be a little more... mysterious, than if you had read it after finishing the Caraval trilogy. 💜

When I saw The Cloisters in the bookstore last week, I had to get it because I was like 'how cool, I'm a member of the Met! I love the Cloisters!' and while I'm not finished yet, I agree with your take on it. I found the characters (or at least the way the author writes the characters) to be lacking? Especially our main girl-- she's definitely a bit dull to be our narrator for the whole story. Also I found a lot of the dialogue and character interactions to be.... unrealistic? And needing to be fleshed out more? But we'll see how I feel by the end! lol

Not really dark academia although there are grimoires, but I really liked The Midnight Bargain by C. L. Polk, it had djinn like spirit, enemies to friends, a love interest who is not a jerk and feminism. Also for purely gothic vibes Mrs England by Stacey Halls. Agh, I always feel sad when someone doesn’t like The Secret History💔I love that book so much.

Popping in all of half-way through a 7 month old video to say that the game in The Betrayals straight up feels like True American from New Girl. HAHA. We will never know the rules, we will never truly be able to play, but damn if it doesn't sound like the most fun game we'd ever play in our lives. hahah

I’m coming to the end of The Cloisters and…I have mixed feelings lol. My current opinion is I thought I’d like it more than I do. I also hate every character, which isn’t usually a dealbreaker for me, but on top of them not being likable they’re also not that interesting, which for me is a SIN 😂

The way the grand jeu is described reminds me of how the "science" is presented in the atlas six. The ability of authors to write nothing of real substance but sounding very academic and somewhat science-y :D Will you read the second book of atlas six, which came out recently as well? Would not recommend though, I found it quite boring.

Can’t remember if you’ve read Babel or not. It’s super hyped right now and rightfully so. It has fantasy elements, but not super heavy. It follows an Asian character who is adopted by a white British man and sponsored to go to Oxford where there is a college called Babel. At this college they are tasked with translating foreign languages into English language however in the act of translation some of the meaning is lost and the energy that is put off in this loss of translation is then harnessed to create magic. The magic is harnessed inside silver and it can do things like make carriages go very fast and keep crumbling buildings from falling and other things like that but basically society lives off of this silver. Eventually the main character discovers secret societies secret histories secret genealogies there’s betrayal there’s friendships there’s unrequited love it’s explosive the plot goes to places I didn’t imagine it ever going. it’s heartbreaking and you will die inside. It’s very smart and And a large portion of it seems to be going very slow but upon finishing the novel I understand now why those parts were slow because it was supposed to emulate how enraptured the main character is in his studies. But once he discovers all of the secrets he realizes that what he’s doing is detrimental to his homeland. There are plot twists that I never saw coming and at times I had to put the book down just to breathe. I have so much respect for the author she is incredibly smart and this book is a huge literary feat. I’ve been recommending it to some of my professors one who very much enjoys talking about translation itself because the history that we know or understand through the English language is not the same history that the native countries understand their respective history. Translation always misses the mark. there are certain connotations that words have in one language that they don’t have another language. Therefore the meaning is obscured. Also it has a lot of Victorian vibes which I am a total sucker for! Being that you are a native English speaker and you live in Korea I feel like you would appreciate the themes of this novel. Plus it has a touch of fantasies so it’s the mashing up of two of the greatest genres! Sorry for the grammar I’m using talk to text 😩

I LOOOOVED 'The Binding' but I was disappointed with 'The Betrayals'. The writing is still good, but I feel like the actual story was a little undercooked, and I really wish the author had at least explained the Grand Jeu a little more 😔

She doesn't need to finish it if she doesn't want to. Everyone has different things they like and not everyone will like the Secret History. Personally, I refuse to read it because all the reviews I see on it bring up the fact the characters are flat. That's either intentional or just plain bad character writing. Either way it will throw some people off because why should we care about the story if we don't care about the characters?
