In my 50 years, I can't remember a right being taken away like this, in such a sweeping fashion. This essentially divides the country, with the south, southwest, and midwest making up the bulk in the middle. All those states will erode abortion rights to nothing. Now, people will say, there will be abortion tourism, but most women in these situations can't afford that, so they will resort to carrying an unwanted fetus or pursue illegal means to end the pregnancy. This will involve the legal system in a way that has not happened in most of our lifetimes. David touched on the pandora's box aspect of this. 100% agree.

This is about far more than banning abortion and possibly birth control. It is about reigning in women, compelling them to return to restrictive traditional roles, and freeing up jobs and careers for the family's male breadwinner. We will see all sorts of civil, women's, disability, and other non-traditional rights being overturned by the Supreme Court and its radical-right agenda. Tough times ahead for all but white males.

@@cremelynn6339 I'm not pro-murdering babies. I'm pro-Becky who found out at her 20 week anatomy scan that the infant she had been so excited to bring into this world had developed without life sustaining organs. I'm pro-Susan who was sexually assaulted on her way home from work, only to come to the horrific realization that her assailant planted his seed in her when she got a positive pregnancy test result a month later. I'm pro-Theresa who hemorrhaged due to a placental abruption, causing her parents, spouse, and children to have to make the impossible decision on whether to save her or her unborn child. I'm pro-little Cathy who had her innocence ripped away from her by someone she should have been able to trust and her 11 year old body isn't mature enough to bear the consequence of that betrayal. I'm pro-Melissa who's working two jobs just to make ends meet and has to choose between bringing another child into poverty or feeding the children she already has because her spouse walked out on her. I'm pro-Brittany who realizes that she is in no way financially, emotionally, or physically able to raise a child. I'm pro-Emily who went through IVF, ending up with SIX viable implanted eggs requiring selective reduction in order to ensure the safety of her and a SAFE amount of fetuses. I'm pro-Jessica who is FINALLY getting the strength to get away from her physically abusive spouse only to find out that she is carrying the monster's child. I'm pro-Vanessa who went into her confirmation appointment after YEARS of trying to conceive only to hear silence where there should be a heartbeat. I'm pro-Lindsay who lost her virginity in her sophomore year with a broken condom and now has to choose whether to be a teenage mom or just a teenager. I'm pro-Courtney who just found out she's already 13 weeks along, but the egg never made it out of her fallopian tube so either she terminates the pregnancy or risks dying from internal bleeding. You can argue and say that I'm pro-choice all you want, but the truth is: I'm pro-life. Their lives. Women's lives. You don't get to pick and choose which scenarios should be accepted. It's not about which stories you don't agree with. It's about fighting for the women in the stories that you do agree with and the CHOICE that was made. Women's rights are meant to protect ALL women, regardless of their situation!

This is a bit overstated I think. It's just a conversation about personhood. We can make federal law about when we consider a fetus a person, and what rights a fetus has as a person. The entire conversation around this has been incorrect and that's why we can't get anywhere. If a fetus isn't a person until 7 months, then yeah who should be telling mothers what to do with their bodies. If a fetus is a person at 7 months, then yeah how do we let individuals make unilateral decisions on eliminating a person? We just need to decide. And it makes no more sense for each state to decide personhood than it makes sense to allow individual states to decide on enslaving people

@@JJ-qo7th Huh? So if a fetus is a person killing it is not a violation of it's constitutional rights? This is why I'm of the impression that republicans and democrats suffer the same delusions just in different parts of their brains. It's somehow ok to make someone wear a mask they dont want to wear if their not wearing it could maybe possibly affect someone else negatively even if that likelihood is demonstrably small. But then its also somehow ok to literally kill someone so someone else doesn't have to be inconvenienced for 9 months? What is this world you're proposing? No one has absolute rights when those rights affect others. We have to make a decision about how we best protect the most basic rights of both people. Obviously! Once the fetus becomes a person then the calculus MUST change. If it doesn't in your mind then you're literally a walking contradiction. I personally believe in all cases the effect with have on others matters to what "rights" we can claim. It's honestly mind-boggling to me how people can vote against their interests to "punish" a certain party. Any politician can easily get a gig at CNN for 6 figure salary if they wanted, no one's being "punished" other than the people.
@danielmortimer532
@danielmortimer532 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you're saying. But honestly this is the fault of left leaning citizens for not voting enough. The vast majority of America is either purely left leaning or moderately liberal in their opinions and aren't interested in "punishing" Democrats. And most want to keep Roe v Wade. The problem has always been that a large chunk of the left don't vote, especially the millennial demographic which is almost completely liberal, and people of color don't vote enough either (although the issue with low turnout for minorities is sometimes discrimination). If the majority of people under 35 voted and most people in minority groups voted, Republicans would never win and human rights wouldn't be in jeopardy. Instead the majority of consistent voters are white baby boomers who overwhelmingly vote Republican, and until that shifts nothing will change. Conservative white baby boomers view voting as a moral and religious duty while a lot of liberals don't have a worldview that compels them to consistently vote. Young people and minorities not voting is why Florida has now gone so far right, because a bunch of old white boomers moved down there in droves when they retired and almost ALWAYS vote Republican. Non-voting liberals lack of action has immense consequences. Our entire system is essentially being run by out of touch geriatrics, and it will probably get much worse if we don't wake up. There's absolutely no reason AT ALL for things to be going backwards when liberal social and economic policies are more popular than ever, and the extremist white conservative/christian faction of America statistically continues to fade and die off. Everyone on the left needs to make sure they get to the polls!

If you are on the left an voted independent you bear responsibility. Its why we are here now. @Roger YES. And fully one third (10) of those changes - the Bill of Rights - made in 1791 two years after your country's Constitution became its Basic Law. One change three years later related to state sovereignty immunity in 1794 and one a further ten years later linking the election of president and vice-president in 1804. Making twelve out the total 27 changes in the first fifteen years after your Constitution was ratified. The remaining fifteen changes in the 218 years since. Nothing for sixty years. Three in the aftermath of the Civil War, 1865-70. Then a further nothing for forty-three years. Then six in twenty years including the two that reversed one another: One that allowed Congress to levy income tax and one that allowed election of US senators by popular vote both in 1913. Two relating to Prohibition in 1919 and its appeal in 1933. One that granted women the vote in 1920 (decades after other western democracies, including mine I might add). One that changed term dates for presidents, vice presidents and Congress in 1933. None for eighteen years. One limiting presidential term numbers in 1951. Then a flurry of four in ten years 1961-71 regarding elections, voter entitlement and succession. And one regarding the timing of congressional pay increases in 1992. Again nothing for 30 years. A number of changes were really significant but others not much more than administrative. Not really that responsive to contemporary needs.

The problem remains that the supreme court uses the rather vague amendments contained in the bill of rights to decide abortion cases. Maybe it would be a better idea to incorporate human rights in a new amendment, as it is the foundation of many constitutions in Europe.

Yeah, like Sanders. They did everything to sabotage him twice when he was running and popular instead of letting it be a free and fair election. It was the damage they were willing to bare not letting a candidate that was supposed to be on their side win fair and square. It's just speculation of course, but I doubt I was the only one suspicious when Sanders lost the nomination and some sort of app counting votes kept sending mainly Sanders' votes to different candidates.

@@nas10iris There are any number of examples where God supported the murder of pregnant women. But the gold standard of abortion in the Bible is Numbers 5:19-21. The Ordeal of Bitter Waters. Basically a man can bring his wife before a priest if he suspects her of adultery. The priest gives her a potion (abortifacient) and if she miscarries, then it's God's judgement on her as an adulterer. If she doesn't miscarry, then she is deemed a good wife. Another good one is Exodus 21:22-25. It describes the different punishments that can be meted out if a pregnant woman is assaulted. If she miscarries due to the assault but suffers no harm to her own self, there is a monetary fine. If *she* is harmed then the punishment is life for a life, hand for a hand etc. The unborn child is not considered a "life" and only worthy of a monetary fine.

- If we're coming from a Biblical perspective; According to Genesis, a fully formed body is as no more than dust, up until God breathes into it - the "Breath of Life" , at which point the body-form is enlivened (inhabited ). If what is written is taken literally in any case. The fact is that Moralists are merely conjecturing on things they scarcely understand, causing untold suffering through their hubris and ignorance. Ultimately, to each his own, otherwise we needlessly harm one another all the while believing that we are doing God's work. We are not, and the proof is in the fruit such activity bears. If we love babies, wonderful. Once they are born, let us collectively see to it that ours is a society that provide the necessary resources to enrich their lives. Otherwise, let us - please, just stay out of other peoples business, and PROVE to ourselves the veracity of our strongly held beliefs. Romans 14:22 "...Do you have faith? HAVE IT TO YOURSELF before God. Happy is he who does not condemn HIMSELF in what he approves of or disapproves." What little there is on subject of abortion in the Bible hardly substantiates a belief that a fetus, prior to birth, possesses personhood - quite the contrary in fact. Exodus 21:22-25 If I kick your wife in the stomach during a fight with you, aborting the baby, then eye for an eye only applies to injuries to your wife. The abortion is only a fine, in that the fetus is property. Numbers 5:11-31 Abortion as a punishment for adultery. Deuteronomy 28:18-53 Eating your fetus as a punishment. 2 Kings 8:12 burn their cities, crush the heads of their babies and rip open their pregnant women. 2 Kings 15:16 killing all residents and ripping open pregnant women with the sword. Hosea 9:10-16 God will abort your fetus. Hosea 13:16 For rebelling against God, Samaria's people will be killed, their babies will be dashed to death against the ground, and their pregnant women will be ripped open with a sword.

And ultimately if one of their own gets caught aborting, they forgive that mistake and sometimes even reelect politicians who forced their mistress to get rid of an unwanted fetus. They don't actually care about people, only in making a political issue of fetuses. It's the laziest most insincere advocacy of all. Don't lift a finger to help anyone but go ahead and pat their own backs for their fake morality.

What we need is a voting system for federal issues. The only reason why, where I live, these issues are what the people want, is because the PEOPLE get to vote on them. We shouldn't rely on greedy politicians to make decisions for the citizens of the US.

I want to be pro-choice. The only reason I am pro-life is because men do not have the same voice or freedom of choice as women do on whether or not they want to be in the life and have rights and responsibilities of the child. If the pro-choice crowd started advocating for men's choice as well, then I would be pro-choice.

But what about our country's stark ideological, political, and cultural divisions? Which side would win more often and thus be able to culturally dominate America? What if the Christian far right always won? They could then compel non-conservatives to live the way the far right wanted them to live! Yikes!

I voted for Jill Stein in 16. For the first time in my life, I felt democracy and all of its power. I'm grateful for having it. I was beyond furious with the Democrat party for the way that they treated Bernie. I will certainly accept a share of the blame for this. I honestly thought that the Dems would change. Maybe they did. It hasn't been enough for me. Having said this though....there does seem to be more traction with progressive ideas....incremental at best (college loan forgiveness etc...). They'll never be anything beyond a two party system unless a whole bunch of things change....rank choice voting, term limits, end citizens united... This is horrible though and personally, my vision of the Democrat party coming back with more honesty and open-mindedness in 17, with a united front of ideas has not quite come to fruition. I think that it's possible for this country to realize itself and truly purge from the "big lie" cronyism, culture war, religious zealots. Not sure if we have hit rock bottom yet to begin our accent towards M4All, serious climate change policy, real equality.

Well, more things are going to change. Who knows make it illegal to let women join the military. If I were a Supreme Court justice I would be wearing a bulletproof jacket and a helmet every time I went outside my house. Even in the court room.

Do we not blame the Democrats who failed to codify Roe into law when they had super majorities?
@CorwinFound
@CorwinFound 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Both Obama and Biden campaigned on codifying Roe v Wade legislatively. Americans were told to vote in order to protect these rights. Well, they voted. Twice with a trifecta. And still it was left to the Supreme Court. Dems are pathetic. Better than GOP but that's not exactly a high bar.

Legislation doesn't fix anything, though. The next time the other party gets power they would just undo it anyway. Any law made can be unmade. There is no settled law. The only thing stopping regression is not allowing regressive to hold power. Rights do not really exist. They are privileges the government allows you to have, but the word "right" sounds warm and comforting. You only have the rights you can enforce.
