I am learning a lot from you in advance of my trying these methods. To date I've been a regular artist in acrylics but there are such beautiful effects in this pouring method that I want to try it. I've bought a load of cheap canvases and cheap paints from the dollar store to experiment with, because I don't want to use all my expensive acrylics just to practice. Once I've "got" it, then I will try with better canvases and my good paints. I love that it's such a simple mix of paint and water with no fussy additives etc. I've just ordered myself a heat gun which should arrive tomorrow, so I am all set. I do love this wave and I really want to try it. I would have put more white on the end of the crest because waves on the crest usually have white foam on them, but other than that I can't wait to try this on one of my big canvases!

I teach acrylic pouring at a senior center and everyone is so amazed in how much work goes into selecting colors and in placement. The beginning class is easy to prove to folks they really can do it. The intermediate class goes a bit more into viscosity and color theory. The advanced class will make them think even more, which is a good thing. I know you spent a lot of time picking the right colors, diluting them properly (even if they're pre-mixed in bottles because that takes a lot of time depending on what medium you're using, not to mention that metallics are notoriously difficult to work with sometimes), and then working out their placement so it comes out the way you intend. It's not just willy-nilly. It takes thought and practice. I think that's the thing that people forget when they're looking for a commissioned piece. These are going to cost MORE. Looking for a "cheap" piece? Then don't ask for a commission. Before I display the sample of what we're doing in class, it's taken a lot of trial and error. This is one reason pieces are so expensive. Yes, artists are looking to make a living. But for those of us who are looking to simply recoup our product expense, we have to be able to "get it right" in a couple of tries or we waste more paint/fluid/supplies than is necessary for a class. We have to waste that much in experimentation so that we can teach folks who have no clue, so that it's as easy as it can be for them to be successful in a single-try class. This requires that I ask for a $10 fee payable to me directly for every class as a supply fee. This stuff isn't cheap. And sometimes, I don't make back all of what I paid in. But I'm good with that because my goal is to teach folks who didn't know they could do something that they really, really can. Getting something "right", especially a commissioned piece, requires practice. Could be on a canvas board, or an old canvas prepped for a new painting. We could pour several mixtures on a single canvas to see how the colors and medium work together ... and all of that costs money in product and takes time. Honestly? It's cheaper to do a commissioned "normal" art piece than it is to do a pour for a very particular client. Your time is money. Your "practice" fluids (paint, medium) is money. If you have to have multiple meetings with a client, that's your time, so that's money. The practice canvas is money. The product for the final image is money in both time and product. So (and I've had this happen), if you are taking an order for a commissioned piece, take everything you will need to use in calculating the cost of the piece. If you don't, then you'll lose money. Not only profit that will allow you to pay your bills, but low-balling will eat into your product bottom line. Round HIGH. Not stupid high, but more than you will need to replace your product. I don't paint for profit. I teach, and I paint just for me, and I've taken several commissions. Be realistic in your commission price. I give my finished examples to folks in class because I have NO room for finished canvas. The class folks (since they've been with me) love this. And, I can get rid of stuff that I'm not going to sell or put on my wall. And for buyers... Don't balk at the price of an original piece (not a copy). There was time and effort, as well as a lot of product that went into the piece, and then there's the cost of the canvas and if it's framed, then it's going to cost more because frames aren't cheap. Then there's the finish, be it brush on varnish, spray on spar varnish (which is for outdoors and will provide UV protection), or an epoxy resin coating (like a bar top coating), which will be more expensive because resin is expensive, and then you have to choose a non-yellowing one, and one that has UV protectant. If you're going to commission a piece, expect to . The artist will do everything they can to make it what you want, but you'll have to pay, because it costs more to make a commissioned piece than it would another random piece. Don't expect "cheap" for a commissioned piece. The artist may do it for "cost", but that cost will be higher than any other randomly done piece. "COST" means what it costs to do the final piece as you have approved, as well as the cost for everything they used to experiment so they can present options. Don't cheap out on original pieces. A copy? Even on canvas? Sure. But not an original piece ... and certainly NOT for a commissioned piece. Stepping off of my soap box now.

Ive always been fascinated by the process of acrylic pours, but I almost never like the end result because it often gets overworked and details get lost. Or the paints keep running after the artist is done and the final piece doesn't look like where they stopped working in it. But these works by Molly amazing, the waves look so beautifully layered and in motion. Cant wait to see more.
