Marvel comics nerd here. Just some background on the Phoenix and Jean that the movies don't really make clear. Firstly, the Phoenix is a sentient entity. It's omniversal, meaning that there is only ONE phoenix force that exists for all dimensions and timelines. Its true power exists in a sort of pocket dimension of its own making called "The White Hot Room" which is essentially the afterlife for mutants. As for what the Phoenix actually *IS* - it's the sum total psychic energy from all life in the multiverse that has ever and will ever exist. Its purpose is to "fix broken universes" but it's so powerful that it has difficulty maintaining itself in a small enough scale as to not accidentally destroy the universes it enters. It works through cycles of burning away the old and being rebirthed. That's how it "heals" things in universes that are fundamentally broken. Anyone can be a host to the Phoenix force, but Jean is, in the Phoenix's own words "the perfect host." She is one of only two people that we know of in existence that can contain the FULL power of the Phoenix without being overcome by the power and self-destructing. There are a few stories where Jean assumes the full powers of the Phoenix and becomes an entity know as the "White Phoenix of the Crown" who is basically the presiding force over life in the multiverse. She can do nearly anything, and in recent comic runs, the Phoenix has been raised even higher in the ranking of most powerful beings. Jean with the Phoenix force is a LITERAL force of nature.

They kind of had to kill Mystique. Jennifer Lawrence was tired of spending hours every morning, naked, while they put the blue on. Part of why the team has matching costumes now is to cut down on her prep time before filming every day. At first, she just wasn’t going to be in the movie at all, but they talked her into it with the easy costume, and then killing her off early in the runtime.

@TearDownGenesis

Actually it's been a bodysuit for the last 2 movies, that's why the blue is so much different than the first movie. Also, she was never fully naked, she had covers over the key areas. They killed her off because she likely didn't want to renew her contract due to money. She was at her peak status then and could get a higher pay than they were wanting to pay out. For a few movies, but she had a multi-movie deal that she signed early in her Hunger Games roles before she was hot commodity. She had a 3 movie deal, and they got her back for just an early part of this film to make it so she doesn't just disappear (And to throw her name on the title and in the advertising).

Yeah, only Rebecca Ramon was naked when she played Mystique. Jennifer Lawrence wore a body suit in all the movies. And I think she knew the X-Men movies were going downhill with producers not knowing why to do or what kinda movie to make next so she bailed. She’s the only A-List actor in this series. Probably Fassbender too.

@CaptainAmercia
@CaptainAmercia Ай бұрын
@@VforVictory00 There's zero reasons to watch the original series as X-Men 97 is easy to get into regardless of your knowledge of the X-Men. The show, like the comics of the X-Men 1970s to 1990s recaps past events, basic information so you know what happened before the events of the show. Like comics. Most people would pick up a random comic issue and read through it, not reading the past issues which is why you see characters recapping past events for the reader. Shows of the 90s did this as well with "Previously On" along with characters meaning past events. Also X-Men 1994 hasn't age all that well, so it would be a hassle to have someone watch through a dated show before going into a series that's thousands times better. It's arguably a great introduction to the X-Men for people unaware of the comics, movies, etc. It changes the status Quo a little but after watching it with my friend who knew nothing about the X-Men I found that the show did an amazing job at making sure those people were not lost or confused. So yeah, no need to watch the original series but Jax could watch a short recap within the reaction video. I just think it's better to meet these characters within the show itself rather than a recap video.

Idk what happened to my original comment though. I think Jax could watch the first episode. If she feels lost then she could watch a recap video right before going into the second episode. But I feel like going into X-Men 97 blind to past events adds alot of mystery giving you a unique outlook on these events. More shocking and surprising lol

Hey, Jacqueline! The Phoenix Saga ranks among the greatest X-Men stories ever. A studio would require four complete films to do it justice! I appreciated that "Dark Phoenix" made a good faith effort to tell the Saga with as much fidelity as possible despite unavoidably necessary alterations based on the franchise's early narrative choices and the lack of cosmic build-up. A cosmic element is at THE ROOT of this story and a lack thereof in "X3" contributed greatly to mangling the tale during Fox's first pass. However, even without that background knowledge, the movie takes great pains to seamlessly integrate the more outlandish elements by carefully explaining what the Phoenix Force is, how it destroyed the D'Bari world, how Vuk's group survived and why they wish to harness this power in that beautiful starscape sequence. Rather than finding it jarring, I saw it as a natural expansion of the X universe. The single greatest correction directly contradicts the end of "Apocalypse" which implied the Phoenix Force was an intrinsic manifestation of Jean's power. The plot quickly establishes that an EXTERNAL presence bonds with Jean augmenting her telekinetic abilities. Once the writers established that, I forgave the film any flaw because I realized that Fox was earnestly attempting to give fans the story they so desperately wanted to see. Not only did they get the power source correct but then they added the shuttle incident, the planetary holocaust, an extraterrestrial presence and Jean's apotheosis. These were all accurate but risky decisions since the series had been so earthbound up until this point. However, as the license was expiring, Fox decided to go for broke and I applaud their effort. They so aimed to please that they even give us a brief glimpse of Genosha, the mutant sanctuary. Sure, Genosha looks like a refugee camp instead of a bustling tropical metropolis and Jessica Chastain is not Empress Lilandra of the Shi'ar Empire but Fox gets points for trying. Although there is less social allegory and more derivative beats, you still get the powerful duality of Erik and Charles, the same clutch of terrific actors and some extraordinary fight sequences with powers used in concert. X-Men movies may not all reach transcendent heights but they never fail to entertain. It's impossible to dislike a movie that has Jean humble the two most powerful figures we know by crushing Erik's helmeted head and by forcing Charles to stumble up a flight of stairs! The concluding train reshoots were cobbled together hastily but we see the youngsters cut loose for the first time with savage results in a brutal climax! These are the simple pleasures to be had in this film. You should see the animated adaptation of the Phoenix Saga from the '90's cartoon! It is by far the most comic accurate with Jean's gut-wrenching heroic sacrifice on the Blue Area of the Moon. The mutant student in white with the blue eye paint who was singing amid the swirling lights in the garden of Xavier's school during the nighttime party was Alison Blaire aka Dazzler! In the comics, she's a pop star who's closeted as a mutant and exposed. The discrepancy between "X3" and "Dark Phoenix" regarding Jean's childhood is the result of this story taking place in the secondary timeline. This film should have been seen after the 1983-set "Apocalypse" and before the 2016-set "Deadpool". The last chronological appearance of the young cast is their cameo in "Deadpool 2". X-MEN TIMELINES: Egypt --> 1845 --> Nagasaki --> First Class --> DOFP --> Origins ------------------------------------------------> X1 --> X2 --> X3 --> Wolverine ----------> New Mutants ----------------------> Logan Egypt --> 1845 --> Nagasaki --> First Class --> DOFP ----------------> Apocalypse --> Dark Phoenix ------------------------------------------------> Deadpool --> Deadpool 2 -----> DOFP Utopia Egypt --> 1845 --> Nagasaki --> First Class --> DOFP --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> DOFP Dystopia Do NOT watch the films in release order!!!!! Follow this RECOMMENDED ORDER to keep the multiple timelines orderly and to end the saga with two strong entries. Apologies in advance for the long comment! I'm really glad you liked this movie as much as I did. It's definitely not "extraordinarily" comic-accurate, but all the major story beats of The Dark Phoenix Saga are there, and when you consider that writer/director Simon Kinberg had planned for this to be two films with a very different ending, the fact he managed to compress it into a coherent two hour story that still gives Jean a pretty full character arc was fairly impressive while adding in a few nods and Easter Eggs to make it feel more like a finale. I also loved that you picked up on how amazing the soundtrack is -- Hans Zimmer broke his own rule about not wanting to do "superhero" movies again because he liked the story and wrote the score. The next movie, "The New Mutants", is definitely its own thing. I think it's a very interesting film and I think you'll really like it, but don't expect it to tie into anything. The X-Men get mentioned once, but that's about it, so "Dark Phoenix" really is the Fox X-Men's true last outing (until whatever "Deadpool & Wolverine" has in store for us lol) Your protection of Kurt was so wonderful; loved all the "John Wick" references and the impalement joke sent me howling :) Here's some fun Easter Eggs and notes that were in there for the comic fans for you! 1. The aliens do call themselves the D'Bari and you learn Jessica Chastain's alien queen character is named Vuk when she is first meeting up with her generals on the rooftop early on, but it's such a quick exchange of dialogue it's easy to miss. The D'Bari in the comics are pretty different -- Kinberg had intended to use the Skrulls because Fox had ownership of them at one point, but Disney had acquired them and were using them in "Captain Marvel" by then. In the comics, when Jean has fully gone Dark Phoenix, she accidentally destroys the D'Bari planet, and one of the few survivors, Vuk, comes for revenge years later, so Kinberg decided to use them as Easter Eggs for comic fans who would get the reference. 2. Jean Grey's powers do awaken due to trauma from a car accident, though in the comics it was her best friend Annie that died and Jean accidentally linked their minds when it happened, which sent her into a deep depression that Charles helped pull her out of through some telepathic manipulation. This movie can kind of throw people for a loop because the movies have mostly focused almost entirely on Xavier's good side, but his ego and 'I know best and can make people agree with me for the greater good' attitude has come out with devastating impact from time to time in the comics. This movie kind of tries to show everyone's both good and bad sides, which I appreciated by not having a single character throughout be entirely good or entirely bad, but as complicated as people are in real life -- like, as you pointed out, Jean's father, who maybe is a crappy father but also is understandably bitter and afraid at the same time. 3. The mutant performing the lightshow at the house party is Dazzler, a very popular character who can turn sound into light which she can use pretty similar to Jubilee to cause some real damage. Dazzler is first introduced during the Dark Phoenix Saga in the comics, so Kinberg snuck her in. 4. In the comics, Jean first awakens as Phoenix when she sacrifices herself to save the team in space. You saw a version of this narrative in "X2", so the space scene was kind of a mashup of her original sacrifice while also using the version of the story of the cosmic force possessing her to change it around a little. 5. The mutant commune island is unnamed in the movie, but it's meant to be Genosha, a mutant-run island nation in the comics founded by Magneto. You can see that all of the buildings are metal, and a lot of them are shipping containers and parts of old boats Magneto likely dredged up from the bottom of the ocean during the events of "Apocalypse". His two lieutenants, Selene and Red Lotus, are based on different villains the X-Men have fought over the years. 6. In the comics of the Dark Phoenix Saga, Jean is mentally manipulated by Jason Wyngarde, a.k.a. Mastermind, who you saw a version of in "X2" with Jason Stryker, who is in cahoots with the Hellfire Club and the White Queen Emma Frost. Because "X2" took Mastermind and "First Class" took the Hellfire Club and Emma Frost, Kinberg modeled Vuk after Emma's icy blonde countenance and gave her some of Mastermind's qualities, hence the really, really cool 'illusion' scene when Vuk is explaining to Jean what's happening to her in the penthouse. 7. And finally, this movie restored what "The Last Stand" messed up -- while I do enjoy "The Last Stand" overall and I understand for the drama of the Jean/Logan of it all why the ending worked, in the comics, Jean makes the choice to commit altruistic suicide to save her family from herself rather than Wolverine having to kill her to stop her. This movie gave Jean a lot of her own agency back, and I loved that it culminated in Jean's death being what fully transformed her into the Phoenix at the end. (and p.s. Jennifer Lawrence hated playing Mystique, mainly for the long and very painful process of the makeup and prosthetics. I dunno how much you know of all the drama behind the scenes for "Apocalypse", but Simon Kinberg basically co-directed the film while Singer fell to pieces and made everyone's lives miserable. Lawrence's somewhat understandable "diva-ish" demands to return for this final film was that they find a way to ease the process for her (thus the uniforms covering most of her skin), that Mystique's story come to a final end so she wouldn't have to contractually go through it all again, and that she would only return if Simon Kinberg was in charge, which most of the cast rallied behind because they liked him so much.)

The aliens in this are really minor aliens in the comics and were added into the movie last minute. Never heard opf this alien race before. White Queen (January Jones) was meant to be the main villain in this instead of the alien blonde lady, but there were some scheduling conflicts or she just refused to be in the movie or something and soi they went with this obscure alien race.

Emma Frost just doesn't work as a film villain because of her ethically dubious morality. Emma couldn't steal the Phoenix Force for some evil purpose like wiping out Humanity because that's not who she is. Better they chose the aliens and left their tragic depiction of Emma in First Class. Btw White Queen isn't her Mutant name, it's her rank in the Hellfire Club.

Shadowfrax, ha, lmao. In the comics there is only like one version of Charles, who becomes a villain. As someone who can control minds, lockout or change memories, sometimes he does not inspire confidence in those around him, and there’s always an Arc where everyone wonders, what is he really up to? What are his true intentions? Have I been manipulated? Moral conflicts and quandaries that seem to be absent in the storytelling being fed to the youth nowadays. P.s FX did 3 seasons about Charles Xavier’s son, which I think you would really enjoy called…. Legion.

Depending on who you talk to, children don't really develop empathy until somewhere between the ages of 4 to 9. Before that, they could functionally be considered to be pseudo-psychopaths, so young Jean wasn't necessarily murderous, just a typical child.

Nope, these lame ass aliens aren't the Shi'ar from the comics. In the comics the Shi'ar queen was Charles's girlfriend/fiance when Jean wigged out became Dark Phoenix flew to somewhere in the Shi'ar empire and consumed a sun because she was hungry. Orbiting that sun was a planet of "asparagus people"(that's what they looked like) and they and they're planet were destroyed along with it. Genocide. As queen she had to send her royal guard (That were an homage to Superboy and the Legion of Superheros from rivals DC) after Jean. Of course this upsets the wedding plans. Charles challenges Queen Lilandra to a contest between her Guards and the X-MEN. He wins Jean lives, she wins she dies. Fight is on. Choice is taken away when in the middle of the fight Jean takes her own life feeling guilty about what she has done. Of course it's a comic so her death doesn't stick too long. This crappy film is nowhere even close to as epic as the original source.

They can't ever seem to get the Dark Phoenix saga right. In the source material Jean was never incompetent with the responsibility of her powers. Even as the Phoenix she was always in control. It wasn't until years of psychological manipulation, lies, and honestly SA that caused her to lose her sanity and go dark. It wasn't because of some "big power" that she couldn't control. It was because she was being emotionally and psychologically abused and no one knew about it. In the end Jean chooses to die as a human rather than go on as some all powerful god like being despite the horrible things she did. She dies a hero.

I do like this one despite what most people say. It's still not exactly Dark Phoenix the way it should be but it is way better than the garbage they did in the third movie which to me doesn't exsist. Any way I think Sophie does an amazing job as Jean and shows the darkness well too. Yes you are right the Phoenix Force that is inside Jean wasn't something she was born with it went inside her like it did in this one. Dark Phoenix can destroy worlds when she is angry enough and in the comics Jean actually does so once and later she hates herself for doing so when she gets back to herself. Scott is the only one that can snap her out of Dark Phoenix mode and by the way they killed off Raven because Jennifer didn't want to play her anymore and she also didn't want to act in the movie before this one but she commited to it without noticing and she was like 'damned' any way it is a shame they did that. So glad you liked this one and yes Jessica Chastain scares the hell out of me as a bad guy. New Mutants is a new group and a new story and is the first movie I ever saw Anya Taylor Joy acting in. Grate reaction as always Jax.

I haven't read X-Men in a while. But I was reading it when they did the Dark Phoenix saga and it was huge in the comics community. It's a favorite for X-Men fans. They attempted to adapt it X-Men 3. But that pretty much ignored the comics. This adds a few more elements from the story which does include aliens. In the comics, the aliens are the Shi'ar and they have sentenced Jean to death for destroying an inhabited world in her Dark Phoenix form. The X-Men fight super powered aliens called the Imperial Guard to protect Jean. At one point, Jean becomes the Dark Phoenix and the X-Men try to stop her, but she's too powerful. Jean, in a moment of self control, kills herself. So, I don't know if the aliens here are a stand in for the Shi'ar in the comics. But we did learn retroactively that the Phoenix force was a separate entity and it was worshiped and has a history with the Shi'ar. As is usually the case in comics, Jean comes back after we learn Phoenix Force created a duplicate Jean Grey body and put the original Jean in stasis. So the real Jean didn't actually die.

The only redeeming value of this movie (besides EP Quicksilver) is the team-up between Beast & Magneto as they were the 2 loves of Raven. They never got along really, rivals and all, but what they had in common snapped both to the dark side. It took multiple X-men and aliens to stop them.

After First Class and Days of Future Past the X-Men franchise really fractured into multiple alternate timelines. In this way it is very much like the comics in that the continuity went out the window after too many time travel story lines in the 90s. All still watchable but even as nerd with hundreds of issues of X-Men collection dust in a closet, I had a hard time getting invested in the characters. Sophie Turner was like perfect casting for Jean. Part of me hopes the MCU brings her back for Jean and Cody Smit-McFee back as Kurt because to my nerdy little mind they were perfect. When Kurt finally pops off that the Nightcrawler I grew with in the 80s/90s, teleporting, swashbuckling, badass. Love them all though.

In all honesty, the X-Men films have no true continuity. And while this film did retcon quite a lot (which is ironic that this was written and directed by Simon Kinberg, who also wrote "Last Stand", "Days Of Future Past" and "Apocalypse"), I think they somewhat confirmed that at some point, Jean and Charles were welcomed back to the mansion before the end of "Days Of Future Past". We'll never truly know what they were really thinking, but that's Fox for you, always causing studio interference.

Decent film. It has a strong opening and ending. No end credits scene because this became the unintended finale of the FoX-Men movies, excluding THE NEW MUTANTS. But that doesn't hold much continuity with the others. They were both released after Disney bought 20th Century Fox, so the franchise was pretty much being forced to end.

Jax, they messed up this movie, originally the Hellfire Club with Sebastian Shaw, played by Kevin Bacon in the First CLass movie and The White Queen , who was also in the First Class movie, are in the Hellfire club, they were in the Dark Phoenix story, not shape shifting aliens, and they corrupt Jean's psyche, and the White Queen makes Jean into the Dark Jean, and turns her evil? and the Xmen have to fight the Inner Circle of the Hellfire club, including Sebastian Shaw, and the White Queen, but they already fought those characters in the First Class movie,
