In The Last Stand, when Magneto rescues Mystique she tells him "The cure is a mutant, and without him they have nothing." The scientist explains to the Beast that they haven't finished replicating the DNA needed for the cure, and so the child will stay with them until it is complete. This film, to me at least, was a demonstration of how far Magneto would go to protect mutant kind. His entire identity is embedded in it and a cure is no different to genocide to him. So it is a war, which is why he treats the final battle like one. He cares about mutants, but those mutants are soldiers to him and therefore were willing to risk their lives for the same cause. That is also why he took on Jean,. Despite her just killed Xavier, he saw an opportunity to not only get a big gun on his side, but also to right the wrong with how Charles treated her. He seemed on point to me.

Captain Marvel had nothing to do with it. Simon Kinberg wanted the movie to be more of a psychological thriller than a classic movie hence the lack of spectacle. It focuses more on suspense-driven tension such as the scene where Jean meets her dad. Apparently, they thought the movie need more action.

X-Men The last stand is by FAR the better film. it's not perfect, but I do like it and i do think it gets way too much hate sometimes.. I personally don't think Magneto was "simplified", It was the point of his 3 movie arc, the fact that he was becoming more and more of a hypocrite, and only realizing it in the end. also, the film has a theme of "too much power corrupts" not only for Jean but also for Magneto. I didn't mind Wolverine having a smaller arc. the last two movies focused on his story, and in the end of X2 he officially joined the X-Men. So in this film he learns to work alongside them and be part of the team. They even explore his relationship with jean a little further. For the last time... Professor X didn't actually die. He woke up in his twin brother's body. (And if you think that it was weird.. then you probably never read an X-Men comic..) It's as if he felt like something bad is going to happen, so he was preparing for the worst, that's way he was talking about it in the classroom scene with the kids, and why he chose Storm to lead the team, (much to her surprise..) it's not like he didn't care for Scott, he simply didn't have a choice. Scott wasn't in the right emotional state at that point. the last stand also has tons of characters i care for and actors who actually give a crap.. not to mention that the VFX which are still incredible! And the film came out in 2006! A lot of the characters have there own mini arcs which is grate.. unlike in DP which no one has enough screen time. As I said, not perfect. but still better then the dark phoenix. I enjoyed TDP for what it was but it was obviously disappointing.

That is correct he did the similar thing in the previous two movies first when he intended to make Rouge die in his place in the mutating machine, then in second movie when he left all the X-Men for dead on the crumbling station. He is hypocrite that willing to sacrifice others even other mutants to achieve his coals. He takes risks and plays with fire (unpredictable and unstable Jean) because situation with cure is dire.

Just look at the difference in age between Michael Fassbender's Magneto in Dark Phoenix and Ian McKellen in The Last Stand. The Last Stand came a day after Ian McKellen's 67th birthday. Michael Fassbender was only 42 years old when Dark Phoenix came out. Michael doesn't even look close to Ian. Magneto doesn't look like he would get the grey hair and wrinkles in 14 years. Or 8 years when Magneto debuts in the first X-Men movie. Yep, Dark Phoenix only takes place 8 years before the original X-Men and it's still using the younger cast. At least in Revenge of the Sith, the hairstylists and makeup department made sure Ewan McGregor looked more like Alec Guinness.

Magneto embracing Xavier's killer made perfect sense. He knew like we all knew he could not fight her. Why would he commit suicide for Charles? That wouldn't help anybody. On top of that rejecting and suppressing her power is what lead to her killing Charles. I liked "Dark Phoenix", despite its many issues. It was pretty hobbled by not being able to use the Hellfire Club and also being the only film to introduce aliens, so they couldn't really flesh them out that much or it would've been nothing but exposition. Despite that, they did manage to hit Jean getting possessed in space, Jean's mental battle with Xavier, Jean fighting the X-Men at her childhood home after her father casts her out, a climactic confrontation at a New York manor outside of Central Park, and Jean sacrificing herself to get the Phoenix off the earth and save her friends. I'm not saying all of these major plot points weren't handled sloppily! But they were all there, which kinda softened me toward it. The one thing I'm really gonna disagree with you on, though, was how you said that Xavier's arc went nowhere, and that's just not true. Xavier started as this overconfident a-hole that was growing throughout Apocalypse and I felt was brought on by him thinking he's indispensable to the future after seeing his future self in Days of Future Past. He was the one that led the X-Men on a commando-style mission to the Grey house, making her feel trapped and attacked, which both Cyclops and Mystique said was a bad idea. He was also the one who froze everyone because he was convinced that letting Raven get close enough to Jean would bring her back without ever admitting he was in the wrong; so Raven's death was largely his fault on multiple levels. It took losing the X-Men's public standing, having Beast abandon the team after decades at his side, and having Cyclops question his leadership and assemble the X-Men after Xavier tries to say that only he and Scott will go after Jean before he is able to admit that he was wrong. In the final moments of the train battle, Jean confronts him mentally and he is finally able to admit that he just buried her trauma, which, when unleashed without any barrier or filter because he'd never helped her deal with it healthily, kinda caused the Dark Phoenix events, which then ultimately leads to Jean's altruistic suicide. I thought it made a lot of sense that he retired, at least temporarily, to re-think things and it gave a nice bit of symmetry to Erik's gesture with the chess set at the end. Again - this wasn't a great movie, but I certainly thought it was better than The Last Stand. I'll always have a soft spot for these movies because as a child they introduced me to the X-Men (I watched the first film before I saw the animated series and then dove into the comics with gusto) and to comic books as a whole, but I am excited that Marvel finally got the property back. I hope that they give it time, like a solid eight years even, before they attempt The Dark Phoenix Saga again. I think that everyone's learned from these films that this story just cannot be earth-bound; it isn't as grand, as epic, or as weighty without the cosmic elements and Dark Phoenix's genocidal rage and the moral conflict the X-Men face in whether or not to defend her. One final note, too: I hated the bland, boring-ass costumes in this movie, but they were copied directly from the comics. The big yellow X across an otherwise dark uniform was what the X-Men wore during the entire 'New X-Men' run. I wish they'd taken the costumes from literally any other era of X-Men team uniforms throughout comic history, but that's what we got.

One mistake: Marvel didn’t say no to Fox using Skrulls, who unlike Marvel, can use all aspects of Skrulls. Fox hastily cut out Skrulls after the release of Captain Marvel, leading to a more disjointed movie.

Honestly, I was pleased that this was at least ABOUT THE PHOENIX. X3 had it as the B-plot to the cure storyline, and made Wolverine the only one who gets to do anything as usual, because god forbid anyone but him should get to be important, reducing the role of a cosmic being who can wipe out a whole solar system to "stands next to Erik the whole time and occasionally gives a mean look" for the majority of the film. This put Jean's struggle with the power inside her at the forefront where it belongs.

Last Stand is a movie that put its priorities in all the wrong places but at least had an idea of what it was trying to do. I’m going to answer some of your questions. Dark Phoenix was planned as a two-parter but the studio backed out in late pre-production. Chris Claremont writer of the original Dark Phoenix confirmed this back in August in an interview with Insider.com. I would also like to point out that Kinberg had only wrote a draft for X3 that was heavily rewritten by Zak Penn because the studio felt it was too dark and expensive. Chris Claremont also mentioned this in the interview. EDIT: Also Jean touched Mystique and you can see blood on her hand. Later on they show her wiping the bad on her shirt. EDIT: Jean was lashing out at people because she had PTSD. Look up hyperarousal. I did a video it as well.

Honestly, I think the Phoenix Saga should be a trilogy. With the real Phoenix Force, not just portraying it as some type of insanity in Jean's mind. They need to be true to the source material. In Last Stand, I thought Wolverine was going to use the cure on Jean, free her of mutant powers and the Phoenix Force, so Jean could return to being in control. But nope, just killed her. Whatever. As for Dark Phoenix, Magneto wants to kill Jean because she killed Mystique. Why? We never saw them develop a close relationship. Quite the opposite, in Days of Future Past, Magneto wanted to kill Mys to prevent the horrible future. So, he was ok with killing her without remorse but now, after years of not doing anything together, he acts like a close partner was killed. You can't even say he was mad that a fellow mutant was killed because in the last movie he teamed up with Apocalypse to destroy the world. Did no one on the writing team watch the previous movies?

Not really. I mean , Days of Future Past was inspired by an iconic graphic novel that actually showed a possible darker fate for every other Marvel character besides the X-Men. And yet, ironically in the graphic novel, it was infact Mystique that actually kick started the apocalypse. So, that's literally one key element that the movie adaptation got right.

I don't particularly remember both of their soundtracks (though in TLS's case I haven't seen it in a long time) but with regards to their 'Phoenix theme' John Powell(s)'s was the clear winner, and a beautiful recurring motif throughout the movie. Naw, The Last Stand's take on Phoenix was based on the myth that people with dissociative identity disorder are violent and dangerous, which has created a stigma against those with the disorder. Dark Phoenix was a much better representation of mental illness as it depicted the effects of trauma in an authentic way.

I was thinking recently. I watch a lot of youtube and many fans asked why Professor X keeps accepting Magneto's Villain fluctuations. To be honest, a lot of fans ship Magneto and Professor X as. Okay, I just finished watching your video. I just want to say that you are kinda misreading what happened with Jean in Dark Phoenix. Xavier didn’t edit out the fact that her father was alive but that she caused the car accident that killed her mom. Jean lost consciousness after the car crash and didn’t see him again. As for Jean’s motivation. They explained that Jean was traumatized from the fact that she accidentally killed her mother. She was full of anger and pain, which Xavier had buried. He did this because the mind of psychic is fragile and it takes the slightest tap to send it in the wrong direction as they explain in the film. It’s an idea they explored in DOFP. But this time Jean is full of anger and that makes her impulsive. So when she is overwhelmed by the thoughts of others she impulsively tries to shut people up. She’s not really under the control of the force it was just a trauma trigger, she’s just mental ill.

In X2 it was implied that Professor X didn’t unlock Wolverine’s memories because he didn’t want to lose a X-Man. DOFP indirectly confirmed this by Wolverine stating that Xavier unlocked his mind. Hank telling Xavier that he killed his foster sister, which isn’t exactly true.

I've always defended "Last Stand". It's not "great", but, if we'd gotten it before "X2" or even "X-Men", it would've fared better. In essence, it's the classic/cliched "misunderstood" movie. I also reappraised "Dark Phoenix". Keep in mind, though, that "reassessed" also, by no means, means "good". It has moments. It had potential. It had all the ingredients, but w/out a recipe. They dumped the ingredients in s pot, stirred, boiled/burned it & made it the main course. The final act is atrocious in how it let everything go to shite. All in all, I agree w/you. Had "Dark Phoenix" had a "slow burn" buildup (over movies, not just merely tossing a few hints in one) that Feige's MCU was famous for it could've been SO much more. A shame really, but there we are. "Last Stand", by a little bit, is a far more enjoyable film over all. It's enjoyable, action movie shallow, but has solid bits of character development. It's a shame Kinberg flubbed the story twice, but, hey, other filmmakers have stinkers in their closet. The lesson for the studios behind the movies is more glaring - if you can't do a proper build-up to a character, DON'T try to make a legendary story arc work in one film. It cannot be done.

Then they wouldn’t have to invent a new alien race or a new Jean grey backstory. @@agentofchaos7456 no I think last stand is a better x men movie. I think both equally suck in handling the Phoenix portion. But Last stand at the very least had things like The debate on the cure for mutants and whether it’s good for them to take it or try to remain whom they are, Kelsey Grammer’s portrayal as Beast (whom I think deserved to be in way more X men films), plus I appreciate it tried to raise the stakes. But the execution and it trying to weave in the Phoenix saga into the movie is what caused it to fall apart. Last stand at the very least I feel like tried to be faithful to the x men. Dark Phoenix on the other hand didn’t have the same issue of weaving in two plots last stand had, x men alum Simon Kimberg at the director’s chair (admittedly a first time director but he still was a writer and/or producer on x men last stand, days of future past, Deadpool, and Logan) and had the chance to correct that mistake. Granted what didn’t help was this came after Logan what many think is one of if not the best X men films, on that note I felt this cast just wasn’t into it anymore, some of the characters act really out of character like Nightcrawler killing mercilessly despite his character being a devoted catholic, Beast being vengeful when he wasn’t really like that beforehand plus beast from the comics wouldn’t want revenge, now I could see Magneto and maybe Wolverine but other than them it’d be out of character for them to want revenge. Now it’s possible they could get it right down the road but currently the best adaptation of the dark Phoenix saga in my opinion is in the x men animated series bar none

The problem is they take the comic version and distort it.in the comic when storm loses her powers she s the leader of the xmen and they explain that her powers are suppressed,she s still a mutant cos she still has the x gene,while she can t use her powers,her children may still become mutants.mystique in last stand is still a mutant,their powers are a by product of them being mutants so magneto s statement makes no sense.both films make no sense but dark phoenix is worse,she just becomes sansa stark with all the whining.i hope sophie turner s acting becomes less whiney.jennifer lawrence phoned in her perfomance and still acted her out the park.

Both films have a long term focus character who is shoehorned into the plot in a prominent role despite lacking a justified role in the plot. Wolverine doesn’t have much to do besides plot device at several points as well as showing off Hugh Jacked Man. Mystique is pretty much stuffed in the fridge, her death having more significance for motivating characters to be in conflict with each other. Other than that her sole contribution is a Big Lipped Alligator Moment of the X-Women speech, which comes off as an attempt to look woke more than anything and is tonally inconsistent with the rest of the film.

They keep treating the Dark Phoenix movies as a one and done. They should have treated the story like Avengers Infinity War Saga. Phoenix Saga is a slow burn multiple movie storyline, not a one done. This is why the x-men movies fail so hard.

Everything I heard about dark phoenix made it sound really underwhelming and boring. Also sophie Turner just... she seems like such a flat actor. Every other character in the "reboot" felt more than one dimensional, maybe aside from cyclops actor. The ones that I felt really shined, though some had small parts, are bacon, and I guess really my favorite was Fassbender. With the movies before phoenix, I feel like he did a great job. As much as I hate what I'm about to say, I feel like the writers disney hires will be able to make a good phoenix story. But they need to get their heads out of their asses. Before pirates of the Caribbean came out, it would have been almost unheard of Disney doing a pg13 movie. You can easily balance an adult and child audience. I mean they had Pixar... a separate studio... just make one for the movies pg13 and R. If they fuck up my deadpool I'm gonna flip shit

I prefer Dark Phoenix than Last Stand, but honestly, I don't even like the actual comic storyline. It was outright boring the entire time I read it. It could have something to do with the dated dialogue, assuming the readers don't know anything at all about what's going on, but it might just be the story in general. Personally, I would have rather had no group or individual manipulating Jean into being evil. It would have been much cooler if the Phoenix Force itself was the source of here being evil and having Jean need to confront her evil by herself, rather than having a device do it. Although it would still be better to just not adapt the terrible story in the first place.

Unpopular opinion: beast in first clas technically has the best makeup. I honk people just don’t like the design. The hair actually looks like fur opposed to long body hair and the sling looked like blue skin and not a painted face. Also, mystique in dark Phoenix has better makeup technically than any j Lawrence mystique. It actually looks like blue skin. It looked so much like paint in apocalypse and days of future past. Her hair was bad in all though.
