If this is the last video of 2023 on your channel, then you ended it well for me. I've not had a good year. There have been some good days but the bad ones really stand out when looking back from the personal losses I have made, so I feel like Dark Shadow ready to give 2023 a good punch on New Year's Eve after all of the punches it has given me in twelve months.

For some context on this scene: In this Alternate Universe Shadow doesn't keep his promise to Maria and lets the Space Colony collide with earth which kills a whole bunch of people and all of Sonic's friends are dead which is the reason why Sonic is Dark Sonic. The reason why the area is dark around them is because it's aftermath of the Space Colony crashing on earth because of Shadow which you can see both Sonic and Shadow are the only survivors. Due to Sonic losing his friends because of Shadow then Sonic decides to mention Maria because Sonic is RIGHT because Maria wouldn't approve of any of this because Canonically Maria asks Shadow to protect the humans as a promise which Shadow ultimately fails in this timeline and that's pretty much the entire comic. Think of this as one of those bad endings in the PS2 Shadow The Hedgehog game where Shadow chooses the evil path and doesn't keep Maria's promise.

0:55 I can't get over how damn evil and unhinged Sonic looks here. Shadow is literally near having a mental breakdown as his body radiates with power and furious energy. Hell his voice is even echoing in power and Sonic doesn't even look remotely intimated. Even on the verge of laughing his ass off. It's giving vibes of when you're about to fight that unhinged guy who just doesn't give a damn and would let you get the first hit in and laugh it off. Just maniac looking. This is one of the best dark sonic interpretations I have seen.

The impression I got from Maria based on all the scenes we see of her is that she was kind and had a great deal of empathy for other people, even the ones who hurt her, in the end. I think she'd hate Shadow's actions, but ultimately pity him and want to save him. But deep down, Shadow knows that Maria SHOULD hate him, and that's why he loses his shit. Because even if Maria is too kind to hate him, Shadow knows that she should, and Shadow probably hates himself, even if he doesn't want to admit it. So he puffs his chest out and squares up with Sonic to save face, knowing deep down that he's a piece of shit and isn't living up to the memory of a girl who was far too kind and loving to have ever wanted any of this. Because then he has to admit that he's not doing this for Maria, but for himself.

I don't think we know that for certain, he only ever took them off once in the actual games and it didn't really visibly affect him. I think the Archie comics and the Japanese sonic X gave people the impression that his inhibitors would quickly waste his stamina, but in the actual games we've only seen his wrist inhibitors off in Sonic 06.

Love this animation, it really interprets what we know about dark sonic and shadow's free form amazingly. I honestly want more of Dark Sonic.. I don't know if sonic ever went down the dark path in the comics, like dark sonic.. but I would love to see more of this. I just love myself an story where the main character goes down an dark path, and kinda becomes the bad guy. I loved seeing it in Yu-gi-oh and Yu-Gi-Oh GX.. and we seen Dark Sonic in the Sonic X Anime.. So shadow wins either way, as even if Sonic manages to kill him, Sonic is now all alone on a desolate planet without life and will go insane from the isolation. Not to mention all his friends are gone too, all because of Shadow. Kinda puts into perspective how dangerous Shadow was/is, as if he didn't have a change of heart, the Earth would've been fucked regardless of anything Sonic did.
