If you do fight Sif without the DLC, he’ll think you’re just an invader, trespassing his masters grave, and he’ll do anything to protect it. Once you save him in the Abyss and kill Manus, once you enter the arena, Sif will think again you’re a trespasser, but once he sniffs you and gets your scent, even then he remembers that you were the one that saved him and fought Manus. Knowing that you need the Covenant of Artorias to fight the Four Kings, he lets out a mournful howl, unwillingly picks up his masters sword and prepares to test you to see if you’re ready. Its amazing how Dark Souls can tell a story without words.

Why would he kill you or risk to be killed himself, just to 'test' you? No, he wants to stop you. Prevent that anyone interferes with the abyss, so it won't spread again and that no one might suffer the same fate as Artorias, who met his bitter end there, completley consumed by the void and hollowed out. It deeply saddens him, but if he has to kill you to prevent you from treading this path, it's worth it to him and the right thing to do.

It's because I rescued him in the DLC. You can find him just before you fight the last boss. So if you rescue him before you've done this fight, the cutscene will be this one because he recognises you. Artorias' armour makes no difference. He only fights you to stop you getting the Abyss Walker ring and facing the same fate that Artorias did. It's very sad really.

Because of that, I was able to skip most of Blighttown and went straight to fighting Quelaag without fighting that big toothy dragon thing whose name I forget. Never learned to jump in Blighttown because I never encountered those points where jumping was required.

I think the first reply might have a point. The human spirit is a powerful thing (and the monster spirit, I guess). Sif, while a strong and loyal doggo, is still just a dog. When she’s hurting, she gets weak. When humans are hurt, they can get weak, but they can also get pissed or resolute and kick into final gear to beat you.

One thing the rest of the games never recreated was the sorrow and mourning that fills us whenever we defeat a boss and learn more about them. Sif was a prime example, a majestic wolf who only wanted to protect us from the Abyss. Then there's Ceaseless Discharge, who sat quietly, watching over the corpse of his sister and their fallen home. Quelaag, guarding her sister who had taken in large amounts of poison and toxin to protect those under her care. Kirk was similar, he only wanted to collect Humanity to heal her suffering. This is why only the first game had so many Prepare to Cry videos dedicated to the bosses. Because they were consumed and used by the desperate attempts of those wielding the Lord Souls to further the Age of Fire.

Well that was his shield arm whih im guessing broke from trying to protect sif when he was a puppy. And when you hold the sword from the dlc in your left hand it has a special moveset

The shield arm is generally not the dominant one. And you cannot hold a weapon in your left hand. You can use it in one hand or in two, and petty much all weapons have special move-sets for two handed use. None of the variations of Artorias sword (normal, cursed or Abyss) have a "special" move-set for two handed use.

The only thing going for the idea of him being right-handed is when you fight him, and in that it's obvious his left arm is broken. If your dominant arm is broken you switch to your other arm. I'd like you to explain to me how it makes sense for him to be right handed?

I discovered a remove Sif mod so you don't have to fight him. I installed it and it's basically what it was. Sif never spawns, the cutscene never happens. So it's as if (to me) Sif gave the player the chance to right the wrong and not walk Artorias' path

Such a small yet beautiful cutscene. Sif doesn’t want to fight us but she still wants to fulfill her duty defending Artorias’s grave. Loyal to her master even against a friend. Very few FromSoft bosses evoke that feeling of “I don’t want to kill you” from the player. Makes it more heartbreaking that it’s unavoidable for the full narrative and game experience. From Dark Souls 1 there’s Priscilla who you don’t have to kill, thank goodness. She was a kind, gentle soul that should be left alone. DS2 Vendrick is just so pitiful it feels like you’re bullying him. DS3 Bloodborne had Hunters that went mad like Eileen if you don’t help them. Learning of Gehrman’s past makes him more sympathetic but you can get over killing him because he didn’t do a whole lot for us. Elden Ring has Morgott who is trying to uphold what his parents built. His intentions noble in spite of his curse and shunning.

if you do the abyss walker dlc befor the sif fight when you go to fight him reconizes your scent as the one that set him free and is saddend yo fight you and.he does not go all out like he normalie would

Sif is the one boss that I always feel bad about killing. Doesn't matter if I'm playing as a stone-cold thief and murderer; when it comes to Sif, I always cry. Just recently picked back up the game after half a year, and this fight hit harder than usual; didn't help that my dog I've had for over half my life died a few weeks ago. RIP good doggos.

Here’s something that’s messing with me, why and how did Artorias’s grave get moved from the colosseum near the Township to where the Oolacile Sanctuary used to be? Was a new grave built and Ciaran just happened to visit both of them? Because the hornet ring, which is found at the “new” grave of Artorias, belongs to her, and I remember that she goes to visit Artorias’s “old” grave in the colosseum after you defeat him.

I don't think that Sif would care about the character or the Abyss. He's just guarding his master's tomb. But he does so reluctantly when he picks up your scent and remembers that you once saved him.
