My 2 cents - • Hero's most famous products viz Splendor, CD100, CD Deluxe are all based on Honda's most famous 'post war' creation, the Super Cub moped. Infact, Honda Super Cub is the most famous 2 wheeler in the world. Even Discovery channel declared it as the greatest 2 wheeler of all time. Even Honda Activa is based on Super Cub. • Ironically, the world famous Honda Super Cub moped failed only in one country, that is India. Honda Super Cub was launched in India in 1997 as 'Hero Honda Street', but it failed to garner sales. • Hero group gave NOC to Honda in 1998, for setting up their own subsidiary (HMSI). Hero had no choice at that time as they were completely dependent on Honda for technology and any disagreement with them would only ruin Hero's market position. •The lead time for new product development at Hero Honda was very long, ~ upto 4 years! Honda did this purposefully so that Hero would have very slow development. Also, Honda was reluctant to share modern & current technology with Hero. Hero always got old 70's and 80's engine designs from Honda. • CD100 was 100% Honda bike, and its Japanese chassis was weak for Indian conditions. Thus the Splendor was born. Splendors 'box section double cradle' chassis was developed by Hero, specifically for harsh Indian conditions. Hence why Splendor is so durable. • At last in 2010, before their split, Honda finally acknowledged Hero and agreed that Hero group is the reason why Honda gained such brand value in India. This was mentioned by Mr. Pawan Munjal in an interview. • As a token of gratitude, just before the split, Honda greenlit the development of 4 products for Hero. These 4 products were Maestro (Activa), Passion X Pro (Dream Yuga), Impulse (NXR150) & Ignitor (CBF Stunner). All 4 products were based on Honda's modern & current platforms.

@@possessorofgreatness7620 Super Cub is a pure 'function over form' kind of vehicle. It's popular all over the world due to it's practicality and simplicity. It (Hero Honda Street) could have been successful in India, if not for Bajaj M80. Due to Bajaj M80, people associate that moped body style to a milkman's vehicle or fisherman's moped.

If at all Hero assumed that Honda would be wedded to them for life, they would be considered either naive or plain stupid. Except for Toyota who is with Kirloskar (late Vikram Kirloskar to be precise), I do not see any other Overseas Corporate continuing to be collaborating with their Indian partners. They would either buy out the Indian partner or simply severe the partnership. Toyota Kirloskar is a slightly different story because Kirloskar is not into automobile manufacture and Vikram Kirloskar is singularly responsible for Toyota's entry into India. I have heard the Japanese managers of TKM speak very reverently in respect to late Vikram Kirloskar.

Hero has definitely made its dent in the rural markets. Thanks to Honda for helping them build an economical model of Splendor called "Deluxe". Honda could not do the same after divorcing Hero with their brand "Dream Yuga or CB110" as Honda is still assumed as an urban brand by rural markets. Hero after splitting with Honda has lost all its great brands like CBZ, HUNK, KARIZMA and are now just managing sales with Splendor and Passion. Glamour till date remains like a transgender product between Hero and Honda.

Also, please include TVS+Suzuki, Maruti+Suzuki, Hindustan + Unilever. My understanding was that when the Indian market was opened to foreign companies in the 90s they could only collaborate with an Indian co to setup business in India. Later when the FDI rules were relaxed those companies intended to separate out but that separation happened gradually.

Hero already is capable of developing good engines, and they have the resources. All they need now is a team of good designers. Their designs are so out of place, even the Xpulse could have been better if they had gone for a proper (wr155/ nxr or even an impulse type fuel tank and design overall. Retaining the same decade old cbz/Karizma type tank design will take hero down the hill. I have high hopes that hero will turn tables with the launch of Xpulse 400. Eagerly waiting

So instead of Blaming Japanese we should blame our Janta who after getting Independence from British have become Japanese Slaves. We contribute so much of money to Japanese Treasury at every stage of our life Whether it is YOUTH MIDDLE AGED or after RETIREMENT. India is the only Country where Suzuki Commands 40 percent Market. Hero didn't make any efforts to grow their R&D , look at other examples like TVS BAJAJ , they took their collaboration and started R&D was all big .. TVS always had a racing team , Bajaj grew with Kawasaki . With the Money Hero Had they could have bought out Many international brands like Triumph , Husqvarna and others were on sale or almost ready for technical collaboration .. The most exciting motorcycle from Hero honda era was the Original Karizma which was an awesome motorcycle ... From there everything is downhill ... Hero thought, the buyers are always going to see milage and hero motorcycles became boring ... Then Pulsar came and everything changed ... For Honda it was one of the longest collaboration ever in their history .. No one backstabbed just because Hero is an Indian Brand doesn't mean it's not at fault ... They failed to serve the needs of the enthusiastic market .. now they are trying to catch-up but already it's 20yrs late ... Hope they understand and put some real money into R&D and get new exciting Motorcycles out in the market ...

Did HMSI, at first, really compete with HH? Cuz HH had bikes around 100cc and Karizma while HMSI had a scooter and 125cc and 150cc. Unicorn and Shine were competing with Pulsar and Yamaha YBX which were taking the market by storm and HH was doing nothing about.

Hero brand is still in hot waters ther most popular models are still honda motorcycles their r&d is nothing but reboaring old 100 & 150 cc to 125 and 200cc. That's why their earlier popular models flopped like Karizma, Hunk etc. Look at their last showcase event models at trade show they never launched . Hero is in no position to compete Bajaj and TVs.

You mentioned that no motorcycles were available in India before the launch of Hero Honda. You seem to have forgotten Royal Enfield Bullet, Jawa and Rajdoot.

True, but their availability across all cities and rurals and their reliability had great issues too. They were gas guzzlers and considered as passion more than being a household reliable asset

More people need to see this video and stop buying Honda bikes. If we don't support our own manufacturers then our pm will be all over the world with a begging bowl all over the country.

Thing is I suspect that Honda might knew the engine issue before hand. And after all,Honda is known for engine quality, and there's nothing bad to keeping tied with them.
