*I had a great uncle, born in 1926, who went to France in 1944 in the US Army. He sent a letter before he left to my grandmother, his sister, who was only 9 at the time. That was the last time they ever heard from him. His body/dog tags were never recovered and my family never knew what happend to him. He just disappeared into history. My grandmother is still alive and has dementia now, but her long term memories are still intact and she brings him up all the time now. She talks about how her parents were never the same again after that.*

There are several WW2 submarines that have become museums. I think everyone should tour one to realize exactly how brave (or crazy) these men had to be to go into the open ocean in such a cramped boat with half the world looking to sink you without a chance of survival.

This story would make a great movie and with the mysterious disappearance would leave a cliff hanger that can't be answered.

Great video, it's sad that what might have killed them was poor upkeep on their sub. Seems like a sub should have priority in repairs considering it has to operate under so much water pressure.

Why is it when discussing a U class British Submarine the majority of pictures where of German U Boats, the rest with few exceptions where American Boats?

Um...quick note...the cutaway drawing at 2:00 is the sub class that began launching in the 1980s...the Upholder S40. You really should not use it for the WW2 Upholder S37.

Exactly. And 15 seconds later, they are showing a T class sub. And those shots of "liners" guarded by destroyers were merchant vessels and battleships. Just random war footage, really.

@@MrTangent-8 Ah. Thank you. Oddly enough, I had only seen the images of the far more common later series. I don't know the U class as well as the S and T boats, the latter of which also had bulbous bows. Something learned. Still a lot of really sloppy image choices in this thing.

Wait a minute. 400,000 tons? I'm reading one source says 128,000 tons and another says 133,940 tons. Still another says 129,529 tons. But no matter. After 25 patrols, the crew thinking after this cruise they're going home, and then all hands lost. Horrible way to die.

The visuals on this video are not very accurate. Many of those pictures are not of Upholder. There's a T class in there. There's a 1990's Upholder class in there. The pictures of warships are random battleships and merchant vessels. And that's just in the first 2 minutes. I'm not going to bother with the rest of this thing, even though I love Wanklyn and Upholder's story, because I seriously question the scholarship if these are the sorts of inaccurate images being used.

It's not as though specific images relitive to the documentary are falling off trees in abundance. Try to be a bit more understanding and enjoy the film for what it is. Documentaries covering Royal Navy Submarines are not in abundance on YT, Mostly UBoats by a long measure.

And they also use images that specifically supposed to be of Upholder according to the narrative, but are of the British 1990's Upholder class, and shortly after, of a T class submarine. There are actually a lot of images of U class subs from the war. From what I have seen so far, not many were used!
