It's funny to hear that a lot of people fear making comics because they're not good at art, whereas for me i'm good at art. It's the storytelling aspect that i'm not good at. At least with art, practice makes perfect. But what can be done about bad storytelling? I low key envy people who are good at storytelling.
@laya88806 жыл бұрын
I have no idea if a story I've created sucks or not. It's a major blindspot. Lol so now I just stick to concepts, world-building, and stuff like that.

@laya88806 жыл бұрын
@@givcon14 I have a lot actually, (in writing form and a little bit of visual) and I've changed drastically over the years. But I think what I'm missing is some good ol peer review. Although storytelling isn't at the top of my list so maybe someday I'll put in the extra effort😂.
@paulpeartsmith5 жыл бұрын
Thumbnails are key to improve story telling. They don't have to be elaborate, but do think about angles and clarity. Typing paper, a sketchbook, doesn't matter, it's just the raw story. Show them to friends, get some feedback as to whether they can understand what you want them to see and feel. They're easy to fix, then when you're happy, transfer what you arranged to your final artwork. Hope that helps.

My proccess as a lone webcomic artist: I've written all of my plot points and ending in a small summary. I don't have a script. I go with the flow and reach my plot points organically. I only make thubnails and figure out the dialogue on top of the thubnailing proccess. It's really quicker and gets you working faster without losing motivation. Atleast works for my webcomic!

My issue is just trying to motivate myself to work on it. I have so many ideas floating around in my head, characters that I love and have backstories for, and plot lines, but I can't ever get myself to sit down and work on it. I always end up getting distracted and drawing fanart instead of original content. I sort of got one comic started, but it's only the first 10 or 11 pages over the course of 2 or 3 years. I don't know why i can't ever get myself motivated to work on it. I love the characters and ideas i have(even if they do still need a lot of work) and constantly daydream about the characters, but I have no energy to get it all out of my head. I just end up drawing fanarts instead. I'm not sure if it's because my fan content gets noticed more than my original content(which even then my fanart doesn't get that popular) or what. I never thought i cared about being noticed but perhaps that's it after all? Or perhaps i just need more self discipline and force myself to work on the comics anyway? But then if i do that i'm afraid of having a burnout and no longer liking the comics. Edit: Your video was super helpful. I think part of my issue is that I'm mainly working straight from my head, no script or anything. It's just a story and characters me and my friend briefly talked about a few times, so maybe a script or list will help. And maybe starting on a smaller comic (the two me and my friend have are pretty much full blown series' lol). I also definitely will need to draw the characters more because other than two simple wolf characters i have't drawn the main cast of either comic that much. I'm definitely going to give some of your tips a try and see where things go. Hopefully i'll be able to get myself motivated to work on the comic.

I'm so tempted to start a webcomic, but not only do I have several ideas (some original, most fandom related) but the way hyperfixations go I'm fairly certain I'd start super quick, several pages, and then abruptly abandon it in a week. Although I think if I got my art good enough that a writer wanted to commission me, that would probably work out better in the future! I'm way more motivated when a) working for compensation (who can blame me?) and b) working for other people, because then I want to deliver the best content possible for them!

Ugh.....scripts.....During my storyboarding class we had an assignment where we had to work from a script and it honestly was my least favorite assignment from the class. I found it very stifling and constricting. It was like torture to me! Even the next assignment where I had to write a spec script was frustrating. While I found writing the actual script fun I just lost motivation when I had to get around to drawing everything. I would like to start working on a webcomic this year but I dread making and working on a script. I'm thinking about making a rough outline for the whole story and then making a summery for each chapter and then refine and add detail in the thumbnail process. I don't know if that's a dumb idea or not.

I'm very happy that this video exists. Ever since the gov. issue happened, I can't go back to work and I've been working on this webcomic idea for over a year with the script. I've drawn stuff related to it since the beginning, and I couldn't feel more inspired to actually get it going this year. Thank you so much for making this video.

I’ve heard your advice on starting a smaller webcomic before your being story but I was wondering if you think it’d be okay to make your smaller comic on a minor character of that story.
@cuppypie12846 жыл бұрын
of course it's okay, it's YOUR comic! If you want to make a small comic with a minor character, why not? It's nice to experiment.

That is pretty much what I did! I started with a little side story set within my main story. Like it works on its own but it still related to the larger project I'm working on now. It it a good idea.

I think that's a nice idea. you can get more comfortable in your own setting and stuff. I have a really long-term and big scale idea which I definitely won't manage to make properly with my current skills so I have several short stories planned in the same world with several characters who come into play later. some of them also have cool backstories which would feel unnecessary in the main thing

Take a bunch of notes if you havent already, doesn't need to be in chronological order and eventually try to build a timeline with those notes. It will at least give you a vague outline of the story and you can start from there!

Thanks, this is plenty of insight into what I plan on doing in the future. Right now I'm working on designing an entire fictional city set in 2035 on an island town off the coast of the United States. It's... a lot of work, but I'm having fun, and that's the important part.

Ah this came at the perfect time! This year I've been resolved to start working on my comic, I managed to create a snippet for a class I took but man it's been so hard to find the confidence to commit to the whole story. But you're totally right, you just gotta jump in with both feet. I've got a few endeavours going and it's mainly because I just threw myself in it, didn't necessarily make allthe first attempts available to the public but yea, starting lol Definitely got a new sub!

I have been thinking about starting a comic or webcoming this year,and I tried to start noting some ideas. I ended up kind of giving up for the day,because I just couldn't concentrate-I had school on my mind,starting a KZbin channel in order to earn some revenue money to save up and market myself,and a lot of other things in my personal life. Yesterday I saw a nightmare about the end of the world and when I searched the meaning it turned out that I was probably really stressed.This isn't really so related to this video,but I still felt like this was the only place I could take it out off my chest so...

Idk how people just... go into a webcomic without having everything planned out. That terrifies me. If I don't know how I want things to end then the whole thing will just be a directionless mess. I need to know how my stories will end and what I'm trying to say with them before I start writing. This is why I never finish anything.

I'm happy to have found your video. I was 18 when I decided to start a comic. But because drawing was a hard thing for me, I focused more on the plot and story narrative than the drawings. I did practice a ton of drawings and I am at least on the level of drawing full body pictures for character sheets. I'd hire hardcore re-readers (who would also be my editor) to look around past content and make sure that what I'm currently writing doesn't contradict what was established in the past (aka plot holes/retcons)

"Get over that fear" I wish it could be that easy ^^' I'm hoping to start this year submitting pages even if it's at november or whatever month but it has to be this year because i've been working with the story for so long and already have most characters developped and almost done with the script :'3 but yeh, the fear of "what if they don't like it?" is very strong in me lately, maybe because I submitted some chapters without the pages somewhere else and so far no one liked it... yeh, talk about low self-esteem :'3 is pretty hard xD
@jngarrettart6 жыл бұрын
Angie Creations I personally think “Get over that fear,” doesn’t always mean “Stop being afraid”. Sometimes it means “Go do it, even if you’re afraid”. In other words, jump the hurdle, “work scared”. I can relate a lot to what you’re saying about the fear of whether people will like it or not, but we can both do it, scared or no. Wishing you all the best.

The only reason I haven’t started is because I only have one actual character, and a few things I still need to work on. -backgrounds -humans (I mainly draw anthro animals, but I’ve been improving on humans . I’m proud of myself) And also one last thing -digital. I’m a traditional artist. I have a hard time with digital TWT let’s just hope this goes well! Thank you for the advice!

I came here because I really want to post my comic pages this year, but I wanted to comment because your cadence while speaking sounds so much like Griffin McElroy. xD Listening to some MBMBAM? Monster Factory? Adventure Zone?!?! For reals though, thank you for the guidance. I had done scripts and page layouts but it never occurred to me to make style sheets ahead of time. I do wish you had included some examples or some sort of visual representation that we could see while you were explaining some of the things like the mood board (though I've seen some on Tumblr before), character sheets, and settings for the catalog. I love the idea, but it would have been nice to see all the things you personally include or the sort of layout you use to organize the data. Thanks again! Time to peruse all of y'all's other videos. :P
