Darkest Hour's Gary Oldman Talks About Harrison Ford's Rule Breaking And Playing Winston Churchill

We can’t believe British screen legend Gary Oldman hasn’t received a knighthood yet.
The man’s a genius, and most recently won the Best Actor - Drama gong at The Golden Globes 2018 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. What an accolade.
In our latest episode of LADs On Film, he recounts the hilarious anarchic antics of Harrison Ford on the set of 1997 thriller Air Force One.
With the film’s aircraft set riddled with three signs reading no smoking/eating/drinking, Gary saw Harrison disobeying the rules - and it’s clear zero f*cks were given:
“One day when I looked around, he [Harrison] was standing in the doorway beneath the signs. He was drinking a coffee, eating a burrito and smoking a cigar.”
Harrison - you were one rule break away from an ASBO, sir.
According to Gary, that was his favourite moment on a film set. That would probably be topping our list too if we’d seen it.
Darkest Hour, starring Gary Oldman, hits UK cinemas on January 12.

Gary Oldman is one of the most talented actors ever to grace a screen. He's a true chameleon and often steals the show even in supporting roles in The Professional and The Fifth Element.

thank you for also noticing it. You don't need 'millenial zero-attention-span stutter-edit' when your subject matter is as good as this. that sort of stuff is used to speed otherwise-boring people up and to delete their 'umms and eeehs'. you don't need to spice up someone as articulate and compelling as Oldman.

I've always loved Gary Oldman, and I've always loved John Hurt. I never thought I'd hear either of them speak of the other. What a warm genuine nod Gary gave to John here. It moved me. My fondness for both has never seemed more accurately placed.

John Hurt was in a fairly forgettable Warhammer 40K animated movie about 11 years ago along with about a dozen other famous and upcoming British actors. I recall watching the behind the scenes documentary and John Hurt seemed to just be having a blast playing this grizzled space marine. Hearing Gary Oldman talking about him here is truly heartwarming.

Gary Oldman-the consummate actor. A gentleman who adds more than simple acting to his films (remember Drexel from “True Romance?”) Along with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken they took an average film and made it something outstanding. That says a lot about the distinction he brings to every role. Thanks Gary, for the great fun you’ve given us and good luck in every future endeavour!

As a man on the lowest rungs of the acting business , I’d very much like to work with Mr Oldman . Simply because he is not only a terrific actor , but also because he comes across as a genuine man . The short story about John Hurt , tells me a lot about him . The fact he refers to John Hurt as beautiful , says so much . So many people focus on the negative side of life , full of anger and pessimism. That hearing such a lovely reference to John Hurt , made me sad that I missed the opportunity myself to work with him I’ve worked with David Jason ,& despite the fact he’s not a celebrated film actor , his tv performances have marked him out as one of the UK’s treasured performers . And he himself , was an absolute delight . Genius and generosity can sit side by side ,& still be able to produce good work & generate love & respect in equal measures .

I have loved Oldmans films for some time. Im not sure I have seen a film that he was not 100%, even if the film itself was not. Darkest hour has to be his absolutely best work for me. Mostly I think, because I know the story behind the how, what and who Churchill was, and Chamberlain, and house etc, I knew the story fairly well, and I have always imagined how churchill would have been... So when I saw Oldman playing the part, it was EXACTLY as I have always imagined Churchill to be. Brilliant!

The man is a chameleon - incredibly talented. My three favorite roles he's done are as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK, and Jackie Flannery in State of Grace.
