Darkling Beetle - Science Learning Center

This is a common name given to over 100 species of beetles found throughout the United States. They have wings, as all beetles do-however, the wings are fused and they are unable to fly. These insects eat plants and decaying vegetation. Mealworm larvae emerge as darkling beetles; their color is light at first, then becomes darker (brown then black) over time.
As you watch the video of this critters, try to make notes about the following:
1. How would you describe their shape and form?
2. What do you notice about how they move?
3. How do they interact with other critters?

The Science Learning Center (SLC) provides unique learning experiences for elementary and middle school aged students in local communities, as well as the students of California State University, Long Beach through exhibits and activities that encourage questioning and hands-on investigation.
