The motivation in the first movie was to prepare for Darkseid’s arrival as well. Him wanting to prove himself and go home was an added layer and showed how misguided he was but he did have motivation in the Whedon version. Also not every villain needs some grandiose reason. Thanos and Killmonger are rarities. Most villains are just bad and either want to rule, get riches or destroy which is fine, they’re bad guys. I appreciate they didn’t try to reinvent Darkseid, he’s just a 150% bad dude. He wants the anti-life equation to rule the multiverse and will turn the Universe into hell to get it, why? Because he’s Darkseid and he wants absolute power and control. He’s evil.

This scene carries a lot of weight. Steppenwolf demonstrated just how strong he is by recovering the two motherboxes and killing their defenders. And in a 1 on 1 match with one the heroes, Steppenwolf seems to have the upper hand. Darkseid's introduction becomes huge because of that. Despite Steppenwolf's power and strength, there is one person who can brink Steppenwolf to his knees and bring him to expose his head and neck: Darkseid. Snyder cut and DC, you have earned my, a long time Marvel fan, respect and admiration. This is very well done.

To me that line and reference to the ancient battle being called "The Defiance" is telling. It says to me that Earth isn't a planet that repelled Darkseid, it's THE planet that repelled Darkseid. That losing is so unusual, that 5000+ years later that single defeat is a well known event. This combined with the antilife equation being hidden in Earth immediately justifies why the New Gods care about this planets fate as anything but another vassal to add to their empire.

I was expecting Darkseid to have a sort of Thanos-like vibe in terms of his relationship with his subordinates - you know, a sort of deep respect and loyalty. But that's not what happened. Darkseid is being treated by his servants like he's God himself. Desaad immediately begins praying, the parademons immediately begin to bow, all for just a Skype call (albeit a badass one). Then when his actual image shows up, Steppenwolf just staggers back and doesn't even bow, he just collapses to his knees. Amazing introduction that I wish was done more. He was established as a threat greater than Thanos with one scene.

@Jonathan Whitehorn that was before he became Darkseid. He was “Uxas”, he didn’t even have the Omega effect, Uxas is a toddler in comparison to Darkseid. Uxas was basically Thanos. A mortal, who was a really tough nut, feared, but could die. After he became Darkseid? Those gods would be crushed like ants.

I know the Movie is not perfect and confusing for people who don’t read the comics. I really enjoyed the first Wonder Woman Movie but other than, Zack Snyder failed to impress me. The Directors Cut was absolutely gorgeous and for me personally one of the best Hero Movies we got in recent years. DC has such a complex Universe and so fucking many interesting characters, But it always felt as if the directors had no idea what distinguishes the DCU and has always left its potential behind. Zack Synder, on the other hand, shows his love for the DCU, the man is incredibly passionate.
