The most important aspect of Grand Theft Auto is the driving. So when that element of the game is lacking, the game suffers tremendously. GTA V is the most successful GTA ever made, likely because it was built- by design - to be easily accessible to almost everyone. That meant many great features we had seen in the previous installment, GTA IV, had been either dialed back, or removed entirely. This video is meant to serve as an analysis on what makes the Arcade Nature of GTA V’s driving physics un-enjoyable.

The main reason there’s a lack of planes in GTA 4, is because the map could be too quickly traversed if they had planes or jets. Helicopters could get you from the northeast side to the southwest side in less than 2 minutes at altitude. Imagine using a plane instead…
@MEGALODONGERS
@MEGALODONGERS 4 күн бұрын
I actually have to wonder if it was even moreso due to issues Rockstar Games had internally with plane physics and/or collision. The common explanation for GTA IV not having manned planes is that there's only one airport along with the map being too small. However, Rockstar Games had this same issue prior to GTA IV with GTA VC (which has an even smaller map). Their solution to the issue was a boat plane (Skimmer). The Skimmer could have worked quite well in GTA IV considering the amount of water, piers/docks, and the ability to swim. Also, the Cessna 152 (real life counterpart of the Dodo/Skimmer) has a top speed of 126 mph while the UH-60 Black Hawk (real life counterpart of the Annihilator) has a top speed of 183 mph. So, the suggested boat plane wouldn't be too fast. Although, the speed gap between the two would ideally be closed up a bit in-game to allow for better utility of the plane that's unable to make vertical takeoffs and landings (unlike a helicopter).

GTAIV is the only game that can moonlight as a BeamNG even way back in 2008, whilst also being an open world TPS… and people will still call it trash. It’s about time someone is finally talking about the sim racing qualities of GTAIV. IMO it’s one of the most impressive things about it. As someone who only sim raced before trying normal games it was an indication on how well crafted GTAIV was. Its existence is a technical miracle. Whilst GTAIV isn’t ’completely realistic’, it clearly made the design choices to make it the most realistic city driving simulator and executed it perfectly whilst maintaining the fun risk reward factor. GTAV on the other hand didn’t try on either aspect, makes you wonder what the design intent was.

GTA 4 online racing is far more grounded and took actual skill to compete. It had speed boosts if you curb and go over bumps. Braking points were extremely crucial. V's driving did its job well for a bit but it simply doesn't work long term. VI definitely needs some sort of middle ground or maybe even an option to change your handling so people can fine tune their experiences.

16:42 You could always take another car and ram your old one to unflip it. 17:26 You can control your car mid air in GTA IV as well. Holding handbrake (or was it gas+brake, not sure which) also changes the type of air control (so you can actually turn the car left or right instead of rolling it). 28:41 GTA IV also has curb and wiggle boosting, as well as all the speed boosts that come from all the tiny bumps in the road. 32:44 They need to find a mid point between San Andreas and IV, not V. It was a big missed opportunity to not talk about San Andreas and what it did right. V's driving setup is pretty much downgraded San Andreas driving, as San Andreas had a much better balance of arcade and realism than V. Body roll actually existed and was properly applied to correct vehicle types. Cars of the same type had more handling variety between them. It didn't have the forced traction control system of the newer games or the weird physics glitches. It did some things better than IV.

GTA IV also has a weird suspension glitch some may or may not know. If you shoot at the area behind a wheel, it will cause the car to lower, eventually "breaking" the suspension. If you do this with all four wheels, the car goes faster. Combined with blowing out the tires, you can reach high speeds. While it's unrelated, a fun lesser known glitch is the shipping container glitch. If you do it in multiplayer while hanging onto it, it moves so fast that it can launch you above the sky cap or across the city so fast that it looks like you teleported.

Something I always wanted was a "seatbelt" option for getting flung out of cars, putting on the seatbelt could be similar to how you put on a helmet on a motorcycle, you just wait parked a few seconds and it's on, though could also be an interaction when in a car. When on you can't get flung out and you take a bit less crash damage but you can't "jump out" a moving car as a tradeoff. That said they should really also change how bailing from a car or bike works, instead of just rolling uncontrollably you should have a way to stop or catch yourself somehow, maybe in exchange for taking more damage. That way bailing could actually be useful again as right now it pretty much just carries you the same distance your vehicles travels after bailing anyway :P

IIRC at least GTA IV has seat belts, you need to wait for the character to close the door and / or start the car by themselves before hitting the gas.

I very rarely comment on videos, but Dark Space deserves the engagement! By far one of the best (maybe even the best) GTA channel out there. The effort which goes into these videos is crazy (editing, research, scriptwriting...). Thanks for creating such amazing content! To the video topic itself (i haven't watched the vid yet): i think a mix of GTA 4 and GTA 5 driving for GTA 6 would be the sweatspot. GTA 4s physics were too soft and GTA Vs too stiff. Also the whole flipping your car back up or steering in the air is kinda goofy. It had also other issues like when vehicles land on the roof or front end after a jump, they tend to explode which makes no sense. Hypercars and Sports cars should also be faster than in the previous games and also require more skill (for example, they could be easier to spin out, at least RWD cars). As someone who both likes simracing and arcade racing games, i know what both worlds can offer and i really hope Rockstar makes the driving in GTA 6 awesome since its such a vital part of these games. Not only for missions, but for races, travel and much more.

I really hope GTA 6's driving is more like GTA 4's. I dont want to fall asleep whenever the "auto" in Grand Theft Auto is present. It shouldn't be something that's toned down to be as easy as possible to get you from A to B, cars should be a big part of the gameplay too. Rockstar hopefully learned their lesson, look at how many cheap things they had to add to try and get enjoyment out of 5's handling model. Every intersection having a red light runner who would always happen to slow down or speed up depending on how or if you swerved. Every road with multiple lanes always happens to have the car that wants to change lane the second you come to pass them. The police pit manoeuvres not being physics driven but instead the contact overrides your steering controls, ect.

4's simply better because of the impact, depth and how the player deals with it. Simple as that. Only middle point that needs to be found here is how do you make IV's driving less extreme. IV itself isn't near as extreme as other simulations but they could tone it down a bit for VI i guess. More lessons need to be taken from IV than V is what I'm saying, i just don't want to be bored while driving ok? Yes! This is what’s making me afraid of GTA VI’s car handling & deformation systems, Rockstar also have to listen to the online multiplayer portion of the fanbase that is literally keeping GTA V alive all this time, they’re having the most fun with the driving & aren’t complaining, right? They represent the majority of the GTA audience, that’s why I’m afraid GTA VI will opt for a GTAV-like physics & driving style in order to appease & not make those online guys mad, they’re hedging most of their success on them. I hope Rockstar do not listen to them & make the best driving handling/physics they could make.

Can’t believe I agree with almost everything you said. Are you me lol. I’ve been saying this for years. Especially the next gen damage. They marketed it as improved damage while actually decreasing the amount allowed to the cockpit area making the cars only like 20% deformable in the front and back. I was so disappointed when the next gen version came out. What’s annoying is they could’ve come up with so many alternatives like character ducking when roof is damaged, or swapping first person damage as a separate damage model like racedriver Grid where once you go third person the actual damage is shown, or tweaking deformation to a certain level, yet they went with the laziest option of completely removing damage. Hopefully 6 has better solutions to damage and actually adds life to physics in the way cars behave. I could drive around for hours in IV whereas V felt like a lifeless chore.

Personally I love driving around in IV trying to pull off crazy stunts, I've been playing around with a first person mod for a few years and it's quite a different experience, it makes bikes feel way better, you are more conscious of the space they occupy on the road and how you can use that to your advantage either driving through alleyways or jumping off staircases with them. I'm definately on Team IV when it comes to driving physics. Sure it was heavier and swayed like branches in a high wind but I found that despite it being more challenging it was still very fun to drive and far, far more rewarding when I managed to pull off high speed maneuvers and not crash it into something. With V I found everything felt "cheap" to me. I thought initially that the instantaneous turning was just tutorial mode and that it would ease the player into the "real" driving physics but that obviously never happened and when I discovered that you could artificially turn and shift the direction and spin of the car mid-air so easily plus being able to make a static upside down car self-right... Took alot of the enjoyment out of driving very quickly for me.

To be honest i feel so pulled apart by both GTA 4 and GTA 5 driving that i start to not care anymore what GTA 6 will bring. Don‘t get me wrong the GTA 4 driving is awesome and it actually feels nice to drive around through Liberty City but i also love the GTA 5 driving just because (as it already got said) it sticks to their arcade style driving. The addition of being able to flip your car around when landing on the roof was like the helping hand to a cry for help. I remember how frustrating it always was having a sick car in GTA SA and then flipping it. Of course it not rewarding then to be a good driver but it‘s still GTA and not a racing game and i feel like if you want it to be rewarding you still can make it that way. I agree that you can driver over pretty much everything in GTA 5 but it still is a bit more easy to spin out at high speeds due to all the bumps in the road. It just feels more "usual" or "familiar" to have an arcade like driving experience in GTA even thought i really liked driving in GTA 4 too. …… We don‘t talk about the visible damage problem cuz that really does suck in GTA 5.

I've always said that I like GTA V's driving style more than GTA IV's. Why? Because I think GTA benefits from a more 'arcade' style than a realistic one. Don't get me wrong, realistic driving is awesome and I often play sim racing games with a sim racing setup but I think that GTA benefits from an easier driving style. When I'm playing GTA V, I'm not really thinking about a realistic experience. I'm driving through the city while gunning down enemies and making sharp turns. If the game was realistic, it would kind of suck. Imagine hitting a curve and popping your tires or cracking your oil pan. Realism is cool and a good way to see how gaming engines evolve but not all games need to be hyper realistic.

Agree with the comment. There's also a theory that they made the driving realistic in IV because the map wasn't as big and because hardware wasn't that fast at loading map in, so they slowed the player down through realism.

@@cviator_real yeah, there is definitely a time and a place for hyper realistic driving. It can be pretty fun in racing games in particular. However, when you are driving while trying to avoid police while shooting at enemies, it can be kind of difficult to handle everything. Some games are just better with unrealistic driving mechanics. One of my favorite racing games is horizon Chase turbo because it is such an arcade style game. It wasn't meant to be a simulator racing game. While I think some people have more fun with a realistic style driving in GTA, I think the majority would prefer a more arcade-like driving system.

Imagine being me back in 2015 finally holding the retail PC copy of GTA5 in my hands, installing it and playing it for the first time, full of excitement after coming from IV.... and what a massive letdown it ended up being :( I ended up spending something like 5+ hours playing and messing around between missions, and it was just a constant stream of "this is worse than IV, wait they removed this feature?!, apparently you can't hang off of things anymore.. bummer, can't throw things either?, why can't i leave my car running when tapping F anymore? it always turns off as if i held it, why are cops so aggressive?!, why does every car handle like it's glued to the ground?, why is the car damage so pathetic?!, why can't i push other vehicles anymore?! ...... it went on and on and on. 5 was a big slap in the face for people like me who enjoyed IV to the point of nowadays calling it their favorite GTA ever.

People complained about GTAIV's driving but I liked how real it felt or tanky, and getting skilled with the driving was satisfying to nail down. And while I didn't mind the arcade like driving in GTAV I just kinda vibe more with 4's because it feels like a challenge to overcome and feels good to be grounded in some kind of reality.

You couldn't do 360 bunny hops with a bicycle or let a lone a wheelie.. As as kid I always loved to see how many minutes or metres I could do a motorcycle wheelie or MTB wheelie... They should allow you to switch between driving physics, like how Mafia 2 did. We should be allowed to choose between GTA V style driving and IV, or when Rockstar makes new physics for 6, we also have the option for that. That way, all players are happy. They get to have their preference. I feel like this would work online as well, imagine seeing other players driving boat-like IV style driving while other players nearby are driving with complete control and accuracy like V. That would be the best.

I think something in-between GTA 4 and 5 is the sweet spot. 4's driving felt bit too slow and unresposive. The physics and weight are amazing, but everything felt way too slow. 5's driving is just tedious because it's too fast now and too responsive. I never feel the weight of a car, even if it's a semitruck. I can't find that much enjoyment in driving unless it's going mach 5 on a sportscar. This means you never wanna drive anything else except one type of vehicle.

well the point of a sportscar is that it’s super fast. It’s just like in real life. Would you really take an Escalade over a Bugatti? I don’t think so. Just like in real life, some cars are just far superior. The reason GTA makes so much cars is A.) to be realistic, B.) to impress players with how much effort they put in, C.) so you don’t see the same cars on every street, and D.) so each area could have their own special cars that only spawn in that location or in similar locations.

Infact Mabey even the same, Me and my mate were playing it last night, And we had a right laugh with it, just crashing the cars, And Jumping off stuff, We had crumpled up Body Panels, Doors hanging off, We even had Buckled up wheels, And the car wouldn't steer Proper. And the engine caught Fire to, We thought it was gonna explode, But it Just caught fire and started smoking, But the cops were on us and the ruddy thing wouldn't start, I told him to Pinch another car but He was to slow, And got shot BOO HOO. When GTA 4 came out, I hated it's driving mechanics. When GTA 5 came out, I loved it's driving mechanics, it was basically what I had wanted from GTA 4. Now, after thousands of hours in GTA 5, I think GTA 6 needs to go back to GTA 4's driving mechanics. I want like... 75% GTA 4, and 25% GTA 5 for the driving mechanics, personally. The things I still want in GTA 6 from GTA 5 are A. I wanna be able to flip my car over, I don't wanna lose my beloved insured supercar over a bad turn, and B. I kinda like being able to control the vehicle mid-air, only cuz, once again, I don't wanna lose the vehicle. I suppose my idea would be to allow no mid-air control in Single Player, but have it return for GTA VI online. This could also be the case for flipping the car over. Who would wanna lose the car they grinded so many hours for in GTA 6 online cuz they accidentally flipped it. That would suck.
