LaTeX is or was/is one of the most powerful tools for typesetting complex documents - at a time when MS Word crashed beyond 20 pages or 10 imported images, I could easily write my diploma and PhD thesis using MiKTeX, the LaTeX user environment for Windows. The graphics handling of Windows improved a lot - nevertheless, if you ever saw compund fractions including Greek letters printed via LaTeX - you will not want to use anything else.

@@audio2u it is still widely used in highly mathematic academic / research / journals. If you have pages of equations, there is still no substitute. It also takes care of formatting everything, so your entire work is consistent. very powerful, but kind of niche

In DxO PhotoLab you can export into the original folder, going up a path by saying ../ . There seems to be not option for that?

Another great session, Bruce! Just FYI: LaTeX is an open source typesetting package for creating pretty much any type of document you can think of in publication-ready quality. The funny spelling is because TeX (Greek letter Tau, Epsilon, Chi) is the base-layer typesetting system for which Leslie Lamport (spelling?) wrote his macro language. (Thus the "La" prefix.) Waaay more information than you probably wanted (and way off topic), but open source software has to get its advertising where it can, right? Have a great day!

I think you're overcomplicating things! If you export an image that is 3000 pixels on the long edge, you can it "10 inches at 300 dpi" or you can call it "20 inches at 150 dpi". It's the same thing.

@audio2u
@audio2u 3 жыл бұрын
Basically, you need to ask yourself what size you expect to print the image. For your good ol' 8x10 inch, you only need 2400 x 3000 pixels. For a 10x16, you would want 3000 x 4200 pixels. Then of course, you can add in a factor for viewing distance. As the distance you would stand from the print when viewing it INCREASES, your pixels-pre-inch requirement DECREASES. You can google "viewing distance ppi" to find some guides.

For image quality, why lower it if uploading it online? Shouldn't you always want it higher just because, ya know, higher quality better quality? Like whats the difference from 80 quality as apposed to 100?
@audio2u
@audio2u 4 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on your internet connection speed, for some people. Lower quality setting means smaller file sizes. Doesn't really worry me greatly. But if I was hosting photos on my own site, I'd want them to load quickly for the end-user, so again, it's a trade-ff between quality vs page load times. Each to their own, I guess! :)

Ok, my guess is that somewhere else in your desktop, you'll find the actual jpeg! I'm also going to suggest that you have already imported that jpeg into darktable (or some other similar app which is also capable of generating an xmp file), and that's why there's an xmp sidecar file on your desktop. Just a hunch! 😃 Double check the files on your desktop, and see if there isn't a jpeg somewhere.

Thank you for your excellent and informative videos. I have been working my way through them after discovering Dark Table a couple of months ago. I have just revisited the export module (047) after photographing comet Neowise. Problem is the exported Jpegs are terrible with lots of noise and colour banding in the dark sky even though the processed RAW (CR2) image is clean. Is there something I am missing? Your examples of exported Jpegs always look fantastic. Mine always seem noisy. Any hints would be welcomed.

Are you definitely seeing banding in jpegs created from the raw files, or are they the in-camera jpegs? I've always found the jpegs out of desirable to be great. The only thing I would ask is what quality seeing are you using for the exports? I generally use at least 90.

@FernandoPerez-tc5ry

CMYK is an option for printing and press, not for display. What happens is that the CMYK profile differs based on the printing device and other factors (including temperature), while the RGB profile is used for display devices. You export the file for it to be viewed on other devices and then there's a "negotiation" between the color gamut of the display and the gamut for the printing device occurs. Color equivalents are calculated in the CMYK gamut and everything's sent to the printer where it gets printed. This is why there's no CMYK profile. You can get CMYK values should you like, but it's not actually practical.

Thanks! As for print resolution, no, I just do the maths! If I want a print 12 inches on the long side, that's 3600 pixels. It's just "inches multiplied by 300". At the moment, darktable doesn't offer an export option for cm or mm: only pixels.

If the export button is not clickable, then it means that some value in one (or multiple) fields of your Export dialogue box are invalid or missing. Check to make sure you have: * set 'target sorage' to 'file on disk'. * set a path to output to * make sure that that path is a drive/folder your OS can write to As long as these criteria have been met, there is no reason that I am aware of which would prevent the button from being clickable.

If you mean using copy/paste via the History Stack module, it seems to be working for me. And the mode dropdown (which offers Append or Overwrite) seems to be working also.

what is the default Target storage, because I changed it and the exported jpeg file has no image data
@audio2u
@audio2u 4 жыл бұрын
The default would be whatever path appears in the PATH field of the export module. I'm not sure what it is off the top of my head. Did you watch the video? Because I do explain how to set an output path and filename. If you ended up with an exported jpeg file, but no image in it, then it sounds like something else is going on. It wouldn't appear to be a path issue, but rather some kind of issue with dt not generating the jpeg correctly. Not sure why that would be the case, unless the input file was corrupt?

I just tried to export a single image and it sent it to the correct folder but as a .jpg.xmp file. How do I get rid of the .xmp? I don't want to download Gimp again. I didn't like it. Thank You. I just subscribed and will watch your other videos.
@audio2u
@audio2u 4 жыл бұрын
The .xmp file has nothing to do with Gimp! It's what's called a sidecar file, and darktable uses it to keep track of any edits that you've made to that image. If you're seeing an .xmp file where you have exported images, it's because you've then imported those images back into darktable and done further editing. The originally exported version should also be there with it's .jpg exptension.

@@audio2u Ok. So editing a previously edited file will give me the .xmp extension? That's what I did. Still new to ANY editing program and don't want to pay for something that I will only be using occasionally. Thanks for the response!

Thanks, very helpful, It would be fantastic if the creators of darktable would make it so we are able to select multiple Styles to export in the export module so we could create styles for numerous purposes and export multiple images to several different styles in one export process I'd like this so that I can export alternative processing for clients such as an "Orange-Teal" a "Monochrome" and a "Vivid" version of each file Thanks for all your great tutorials
@audio2u
@audio2u 3 жыл бұрын
This is, if you've already created the styles, you can then save 3 different export presets (export presets have the option to include a style at the time of export). This would certainly speed up your 3 export versions.

Thanks for the video Bruce! So, I am exporting a batch of files with this extension: $(FILE_FOLDER)/darktable_exported/$(YEAR)$(MONTH)$(DAY)$(HOUR)$(MINUTE)$(SECOND)$(FILE_NAME) However, Darktable just keeps the information of the first item, naming all of my files the same date and time. How do I fix this? Is this a darktable bug or just me?
@audio2u

Hmm, that's an interesting one. I'm on my phone right now so can't check, but I'm wondering... So the fields $year, $month, etc use the CURRENT tone instead of the date and time info from the EXIF metadata? That might be the cause.

It's just that I was in a hurry and wanted to know how to export, not to sit through a long introduction and then hear why you hadn't got round to mentioning export in other videos, and then listen to an explanation of what 'export' meant. It would have been good if you had mentioned that you had to move back to the LightRoom section, because I still couldn't find it. among the other modules in DarkTable. Facebook broke the upload feature because of the permissions problem that they had with Cambridge Analytica and the Chinese and Russian comment bots. They shut off all external uploads and posts. Also broke Lightroom uploads and Twitter cross-posting. Wordpress posting works but only to a page and not to your own account timeline.

@@audio2u I'm the other one! It's not a great social platform but it is fantastic for lens research. If your not using Google Bruce, I suggest you have a look. Again not a great social platform but a very good semi-private platform. If you allow them to compress images over 20MP they offer unlimited free storage. For images 20MP or less, they don't compress (or used to, they may add gentle compression now, I'm not sure) so pictures look much nicer than Facebook and Instagram and the links can be used on Facebook. They let you create photo albums in a semi-private fashion: that is the pictures aren't accessible to search engines so they don't show up in public searches but are available to anyone who has the link to the album so perfect for family and friends only photos. I send albums around a lot and the prints I've seen people make with them are much better than FB and IG.
